Man 90s video games shaped my entire taste in music. It was only recently as an adult that ive realised why ive always gravitated towards anything that sounded like house or anything that had a solid drum and bass vibe. Some of the most mediocre mundane games had incredible osts. Beat em ups and arcade racers in particular had incredible music, i still listen to some of the old Tekken tracks.

For me these games and Dieselboy is what turned me into a drum & bass fan in the late 90s. I was less into the mellow stuff when I was younger but nowadays I appreciate it a lot more.

@@pizzahotline_ Ken Ishii, Cycheouts,Takaaki Itoh. Just to name a few. At the time DnB was very popular among computer nerds, hence why so many games used songs of that sort. The producers themselves were themselves Japanese so whatever they made is considered Japanese. Obviously tracks were made in all over the world, but at that time Japan was the mecca of video games. Still is to some extent.

@bordonight
@bordonight 4 ай бұрын
what does low poly means? hahaha who invented this? curious
@MiniDharma
@MiniDharma 3 ай бұрын
@@bordonight Low poly is short for "low polygon", referring to the early age of 3D gaming. Because processing power was still pretty limited, designers had to keep their models simple by being conservative about how many polygonal faces any given asset was built out of, creating a unique blocky-but-stylish look and feel to the games of the time. It doesn't have anything to do with the music, and it's hard to say who invented the term, but low poly evokes the time period that this music was very popular in games: the low polygon era of games and CGI, between 1995-2005 or so.

Apart from the nostalgic feeling, one of the reasons we like these 90s/00s vibes may be that: at that time, most people were really sitting down and creating things using those 'latest' technology, rather than being crowded by the endless popping out informations in the modern days. There were not that much information at that time, people could focus more on themselves, in some sense, I think they held more freedom than we do. Although it seems that nowadays we have much more access to the Internet and the world, we are somehow controlled by the endless information that far exceeds our capability of handling, especially many of those informations are send to you by the advertisement companies whose only wish is to make you buy their products. More accessibility does not mean more freedom.

Mmmmmm... Pizza Hotline... the line to call whenever you want a delicious pizza delivered to you, and to enjoy it at the delightful sounds of the past, a past when things were in motion, in quick but rough evolution, special memories of joy and sadness, love and mystery, and even rage and fear, pure feelings of raw emotion, felt by kids in a time when they had all the time in the world, shared by many in an hypnagogic sea of low poly nostalgia and anemoia.

I hate how much of my tastes are informed by things that just happened to be around me in my formative years. It makes me feel like my identity isn't my own; just a product of its time. At the same time, they really don't make ANYTHING like this anymore - unless it's born from nostalgia.

@@pizzahotline_ You can check on youtube for 'Moving Shadow and Rollcage 2'. I bought the music CD when it came out in 2000, but never played the game. And, it actually looks like Moving Shadow did all of the music for the second game. Rollcage One had a few dnb tracks though from EZ Rollers and Aphrodite and a few other styles like Big Beat from Fatboy Slim. Love your work by the way and found it from '4am Breaks' videos. Since 2020, I've really got back into the intelligent DnB side of things after loving Good Looking Records and Bukem for so long. DnB will always be fresh, and good to know the recent breaks are as amazing as the heyday of it around and before 2000.
