Let's work on the low register together 😁 Practicing together is always more fun for me and that's why I have created this video. I hope you also enjoy to practice with me. If you do so - please consider becoming one of my Patreons. Then we can practice together much more 🤩
Thanks to my Patreons and Bach Brass for sponsoring me and making this Live Masterclass possible. Do you also want to support me and become a Patreon? 🧐🤪 Here you go:

I've known that when I can't help but laugh when I'm learning something at the trombone, I know I'm getting better at it. That happened as I was playing along with this video. I haven't had that feeling in quite some time. I thank you for not only being a good player but using your platform as a tool to educate others to be better.

Dawg@@PeterSteinerOfficial , I know I am late to this video (It's fantastic and I subbed), and I am not trying to be annoying but I have to criticize/suggest something that you have probably already noticed and fixed in other videos. Can you edit the talking tip overlays to be placed in the dead space (where you are ghosting through the next set of notes), instead of over your beautiful playing in the future?! You are giving tips that we are supposed to watch or listen for (otherwise why demonstrate?), but you are the stuff we are trying to listen to or don't have enough time to process and prepare before the set is over. Then there is like 5-8 seconds of met while we are graced with a video that was so pointless that you took time to blur it out. Then you play the next set of notes with this beautiful playing only to interrupt it again so you can speak over it. This editing decision has ruined my day. Not really, I am mostly just kidding. I definitely don't have a painful ache in my chest when I reflect on this. Anyway, I say this playfully and with love. Thank you for sharing and your hard work.

When you reach the pedal notes would you say your embouchure has more bottom lip than top lip? I am realizing through these exercises that I normally play pedals with more top lip. That makes it very hard to transition from the pedal range however. Thanks again for your content.
@PeterSteinerOfficial
@PeterSteinerOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely use more top lip when I get lower. The top lip is the one creating most of the vibration. Yes, it is hard to transition out of the pedal register - we all struggle with it. 😀 Hopefully these exercises will help!

@@PeterSteinerOfficial Interesting. I play bass trombone and use a similar warm-up exercise from my trumpet days: the Air Flow exercises from Vince Cichowiz as given to us by Ed Tarr. If I have a "fight", it's going from playing in the middle register and then popping out f-trigger notes. Thinking of Bruckner 7, first movement bass trombone part, starting measure 371. The entire time the bass has been playing in the middle register and then comes a section that you have to do, going downwards from middle f: ges-> des->ges, f->c->f, es->b->es. des-> as->des(double paddle). Yet .... if the next entrance were to start on a pedal b, I'd have no problem starting there and playing an arpeggio up 4 octaves and back down - even starting it going pedal b->pedal f -> pedal b and then up. It's like my entire playing mechanism "forgets" when playing a while in the middle register, what to do "on the fly" to accurately hit this single paddle low notes. I can do it about 80% of the time, but the inconsistency drives me nuts.

What advice can you give for articulatig and hitting the low C and low B? I found this all very helpful as a single valve bass trombone player.
@PeterSteinerOfficial
@PeterSteinerOfficial Жыл бұрын
I would try to approach them the same way as the C# and Bflat 😀 sometimes individual notes stick out in a “bad” way just because we might overthink them. Usually we are tonguing a bit too hard when we don’t get the result we want - focus on a good synchronization of air and tongue!

Peter, I am finding that the lower the note I am trying to play the more top lip is required to get there, especially for pedal tones. The position of the mouthpiece on my face MUST change to even approach making pedal tones. Please bear in mind I have a standard tenor trombone with no trigger function. I also find after a practice session that uses what is a lot of upper register notes for me that it is much harder to play the lower notes immediately. Any comments?
@PeterSteinerOfficial
@PeterSteinerOfficial Жыл бұрын
That’s very normal 😀 allow the mouthpiece to move around from register to register, the lip needs to adapt the position. And yes, fast register shifts are hard. We all have the same struggles 😀

The modern literature asks for great low register, plus it’s fun 😉 Believe it or not, if you are able to figure out a good low register you are not far from a good high register!
