It’s videos like yours that allow people like me (who can’t afford art school) to still be able to study art and learn so much. A big thank you from Texas!!!

Welcome :-) This was something I learned along the way. I've always wondered how come some colours are just so weak. It turned out tinting strength is specific to certain colours

Gonna sound irritating, but you wouldn’t learn this in art school unless you had a good teacher. My professor does primarily watercolor and he doesn’t know any particular terms and calls paint pigments. He doesn’t know pigment information, how they lay down, or varieties of paints. This is a better use of your time unless you have a great professor. Teoh is great.

Thanks for doing this video, Teoh! Some YT watercolor artists equate low-tinting strength with bad paint, but there are so many reasons to use these gorgeous colors! One is that they are often low- or non-staining, another is the granulation and textures an artist can achieve, and the wonderful mixes. They're often essential for making a natural looking painting. I like to use Potter's Pink, and I've gone back to using viridian on some palettes, because phthalo green takes over and can be hard to manage. I'm also a fan of ceruleans and cobalts for landscape and urban sketching.

Granulation is also the reason why I keep colors like Viridian in my palette. If I paint a tree for example it's nice to have some slight green "sediment" in my mix for the bark, it almost looks like moss and makes it appear even more natural.

The colors I use with low tinting strength are the cobalts; cerulean and cobalt teal. I love cobalt teal and can’t live without it.

Tinting strength has also a lot to do with how deep the pigment will be absorbed into the paper, meaning if it will dye or not the paper. Usually colours with low tinting strength can be lifted with no problem while colours with a good tinting strength can't be lifted or they leave a coloured patch on the paper. Great video as always!

One of your best tutorials. Well done. Simple and to point. I often use half pans for hi strength and full pans for most used blue..ie cerulean( one of my favorites for sky. Thank you.

I have a tube of cerulean blue chromium which I rarely use. I know that many artists tend to use it for sky colors; but, when I paint skies I tend to use French Ulramarine with a lot of water mixed in. If I am going to paint a very small painting, then I will most likely use the Cerulean. My first introduction to Daniel Smith watercolors was when I purchased Susie Short's Essential 7 set. The set contained 7 15-ml tubes of paint. Even though I have many more tubes of paint now, I still use those 7 paints most of the time.

I learned a lot watching this. When you swatched the low strength colors I was thinking I needed to not use those, but then you mixed them and made some really nice colors. You almost convinced me I didn't want strong colors when it was so much trouble to make the skin tone. Now I agree there are reasons to use both kinds but I will be trying to use mostly strong colors just so I don't have to buy them as often lol. Thank you very much for this lesson!

I use raw umber by schminke, ultramarine violet, cobalt and cerulean colors, burnt Oker, burnt sienna. The reason is that I love the atmosphere you can create using them. I love granulation and this is a something that low tinting colors have more than more modern high tinting colors

It seems like colors that have low tinting strength either contain white (as in the nickel yellow and cerulean blue) or are hghly granulating (viridian green). When I tested the mineral based and highly granulating primatek dot sheet from Daniel Smith, most of the colors had very low tinting strength. This was also true of the Primatek paint set that I bought. The more synthetic colors like quinacridone red and phthalo blue seem to be much stronger.

Ive been thinking of buying a pallete of the kremer pigments. I was wondering how you would rate the pigments on tinting strenght?
@teohyc
@teohyc 5 жыл бұрын
Kremer Pigments paint is high quality and concentrated. As for tinting strength, it has to do with the colour. Some colours are just not that strong.

So helpful. Thank you! Do you find that tinting strength also related to how staining a color is? And/or do you also consider level of color staining when putting together a palette?
@teohyc
@teohyc 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the correlation between tinting and staining strength though. Anyway, whether you need staining colours depend on the techniques you use. E.g. If you paint with layers, you'll want the first layer to stain because you don't want the second layer to lift the first layer of colour.

Teoh has reviewed both of those sets kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prdmh5lptM2piJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM1zfLqYm8e5l58.html . He didn't show as much of the mixing as usual but I think if you search for each color, or just watch any of his limited palette videos, you will find he has shown mixing skin tones. The method should be the same & if you search the color names you might find mixes with those particular colors too.

Color Crazy most mixing is on paper not actually to fill the wells though. I know it’s a small extra detail but I’m so intimidated mixing larger amounts of my tubes and messing it up! It would be very reassuring to follow along with Teoh as I mix and fill!

@@ayokumiho I definitely agree on the intimidation & Teoh makes it all look so easy. Maybe when I have been painting as long as he has. lol I am not sure though, it doesn't look like he usually mixes large batches, just what he needs as he goes

How can you tell before buying if it’s low tinting? I’d love to find a high tint but light lemony yellow. Have a couple of nice ones but they disappear in mixing. Poor things.🤭

Sometimes it is difficult to tell from the label. Check out watercolour charts for the manufacturers or those painted by other artists. As for Lemon Yellow, you can get PY3 or PY175. Dilute with water for a lighter wash.
