DIY Funny Car, The Drag Race Jeep Gets a Front Suspension Delete. Oops!

Күн бұрын

It all started innocently enough. I needed to put my race ZJ back together to compete in the "Battle of the Beaters" at this year's Duct Tape Drags. I've already run this same Grand Cherokee in the $3K Hooptie Challenge at the Zip-Tie Drags and then the same event for a few more years. I have stolen some parts off it for another project, but it should be easy enough to put back together.
The only real problem was that I made headers to fit this chassis, but they went on the Off-Road Hot Rod. I had some long tube headers, so I decided to fit those. How hard could it be?
So after I cut apart most of the front end, I realized that I needed a completely new front suspension. Luckily, I had the front from a 1976 MGB lying around. It might be a perfect fit, as long as I don't expect the front tires to go back under the car... Looks like I'm accidentally building a funny car!

James, back in the 60's & early 70's I drag raced A LOT. Your time and speed suggests that you had your suspension dialed in very close to 100% matching your power. That would have been very impressive back when I raced. I would like to convey a little trick I learned from a couple of "pros." Ronnie Sox of Sox & Martin race team said do not "LIFT" off the gas pedal when you shift. START your shift a fraction of a second earlier than you normally would by pushing the clutch pedal in, leave the gas pedal on the floor, complete the shift and let the clutch pedal back out quickly, timing the reengagement of the clutch just as the engine is crossing your RPM high mark. By doing that you will cut ET because the energy stored *(kinetic) inside the engine will add to the power the engine makes. Once the shift is completed and the clutch is engaged again the kinetic energy of the the reciprocating mass adds to the engine power output and cuts the time required for the engine to build from closed throttle. At a very critical moment it can cut wasted time from the power being "off" which is very meaningful since it's all about time. You can easily see it in your ET. A Lightening fast shift is a good thing, but not totally necessary as long as you start the shift ie: press the clutch pedal, early enough to prevent engine over rev from a slower shift. John Keselowski of Kaye Engineering Race Team (Brad Keselowski's Grand Father) told me to start your shift as many as 1,000 RPM's lower if needed, just never remove the stored energy from the power path by lifting off the gas. Get your shift done and clutch back engaged at exactly the peak engine power is the goal. Ronnie Sox "Mr. 4-Speed" said the same thing. Note: That is why the Chrysler auto trans Torqueflite accelerated so hard at the 1st to 2nd upshift. GM & Ford always had the trans locked into 2 gears simultaniously to prevent engine overrev, then let go of the prior clutch. (today they use the computer to cut engine pwr at the shift to prevent engine over-rev and preserve trans clutches) It takes time to do that and that is an interruption of pwr thru-put. Chrysler engineered the Torqueflite to use the kinetic energy stored in all of the reciprocating mass; engine, torque converter, transhaft, clutches, drums and all, while the engine never left WOT to transfer right thru the trans. In most cases the vehicle appeared to leap about 1 car length at 1 - 2 upshift. ben/ michigan

It'd look pretty bad ass if you had a couple extra front fenders, cut the tops off right above the wheel arch and welded the top from a right to the top of the left flipped upside down. Dunno how it would come out in the end but something has to be done about the giant empty wheel arch. You really do amaze me with how creative you can be with your creations!

Wow, that's a lot of changes. But I guess sometimes it's easier just to cut everything out that's in your way right from the get go, that makes it a lot easier to piece everything back in. Oh, and I got one of those super cheap HEI distributors for my Jeep too and it worked right out of the box. But now you have me worried and I think I need to pull it out and have a look at it.

That was a mercruiser distributor cap, circa 2000ish They were numbered like that for counter rotators, firing order is reversed. Fun Fact, the starters for those also ran backwards, so for a long time you always had to be super careful about getting replacement components that spun in the other direction or you had to return them and waste time

@thesteelrodent1796

the idea in that style headers is that there's less restriction because they don't have as sharp bends as regular headers, so it may give a tiny bit more power
@benjamincresswell3713
@benjamincresswell3713 11 ай бұрын
Yes, "shortys" are just easy to put on light weight and cheap. Long tube headers are better for power. If you don't believe it just look up Hooker Race Headers. You won't find a pair of "shortys" in the lineup. The important thing is that they are the right length to resonate at the collectors. That makes a low pressure area at the exit of the header and since everything has mass, it removes some of the stagnant air "mass" in the tube trying to get to the exit. There is a fine tuning of the header that involves a header extension. Not to be confused with a "reducer", we are not going into mufflers frin a race header. The extension is the same diameter as the collector. You connect it to the outlet and when you make a full power pass it will leave a tell-tale where the extension needs to be cut off. Some use paint or a grease pen to make the place to cut it off easier to identify.

It's hard too believe that you gotta rob one engine from a project for another,🤨, that's too cheap-n-lame even for you,🙄, they should make it so anyone who enters that race must sell their vehicle for 3k, if someone else wants to buy it at the end of the race, that would help keep everyone honest, you sure wouldn't have nothing to worry about tho, after what you did to the front-end of that rig, it looks just awful, and not a bit funny. lol
