Lower Sabie Rest Camp Video - Walkthrough, Restaurant Area, River View & Accommodation Types
Lower Sabie rest camp is arguably the most booked up camp in the whole of the Kruger National Park, due it's absolutely fantastic game viewing opportunities. Opportunities are endless in the southern and central Kruger National Park when making Lower Sabie rest camp your base camp for exploration. This region is great for what many big game viewers seek: Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dog. There are massive herds of Buffalo. Impala abound, and Kudu, Elephant and a variety of other large mammal species. Birding is also very good in the area, and Lower Sabie rest camp boasts a number of amazing bird species...
Starlings, sunbirds, weavers, woodpeckers and hornbills typify the commoner species in the camp itself. At night residents should listen for Square-tailed (Mozambique) and Fiery-necked Nightjars and the grunt of Verreaux’s (Giant) Eagle Owl. The nearby Sunset Dam is one of the finest venues in the Park to observe aquatic species at close quarters with cormorants, herons, kingfishers and storks occurring in abundance. Marabou, Saddle-billed, Wooly-necked, Yellow-billed and Black Stork and African Open-bill can sometimes be seen simultaneously. White-crowned Lapwing (Plover) appears to be resident on the river side of the tar road in the area of Sunset Dam. In the Lower Sabie area Mlondozi Dam is a good spot to view waterfowl including some of the rarer species in the park. It has resident Mocking Cliff-Chats as well. The small pan on the N’watimhiri road is a regular haunt of Lesser Moorhen in summer.
Speaking of bird species, Sunset Dam, less than a kilometre, is a perfect place to see a variety of waterbirds as well as bushveld birds. It also plays home to some huge Nile Crocodiles, Hippos, and often Impala, Waterbuck and Wildebeest can be seen on the banks - don't forget to look out for Water Monitor Lizards, there are some large ones here too. This for me is the main attraction from Lower Sabie rest camp. Occasionally you will see Lions or Leopard come down, but just sitting and listening and watching is an absolute pleasure.
Lower Sabie rest camp itself has stunning views of the mighty Sabie River. From the restaurant and along the perimeter fence, you never know what to expect.
Lower Sabie has many large riverine trees in camp and the sycamore fig tree is very prominent. The camp is situated in knob thorn/marula savannah on basalt soils. Other prominent trees include the leadwood and sausage trees. The grass is sweet thus attracting many grazing species. Immediately west is a zone of delagoa thorn thicket on ecca shale soil. Here prevalent trees include the delagoa thorn and the magic guarri. The grass is still sweet, but shorter.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp is situated in the southern part of the Kruger Park, this camp provides guests with a selection of activities that allow them to take advantage of the surrounding Lowveld.
With beautiful views of the Sabie River, the Lower Sabie Rest Camp of the Kruger National Park offers a variety of accommodation available to suit guest’s different needs.
Comfortable accommodation with the benefit of convenient leisure facilities and services awaits. With views of the Lebombo Mountains, the focus here is on relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Activities include swimming, safari drives, and game walks. The rustic thatched units offer guests comfortable and convenient accommodation.
Lower Sabie Lodge has 112 spacious thatched units for guest’s enjoyment. All the units feature air conditioning. Some of the cottages contain kitchenettes and en-suites while others make use of the communal ablutions and kitchen facilities. There is a range of family units in Lower Sabie to suit the needs of any size family.
Wildlife activities such as guided walking safaris and the guided early morning and afternoon/evening safaris are not to be missed during a stay in the Kruger National Park. The unique bush breakfast and bush braai take place outdoors which provides great fun for all guests and includes the safari drive to the location. Visits to the nearby Sunset Dam and the Nthandanyati Bird Hide are also recommended.
