EDITORS NOTE - The video incorrectly states that tile sealer must be used. You do not need to use tile sealer on porcelain tile.

This is the correct way to install . Prep is not over kill this is the way and the correct way to have a long lasting tile job . This is how my company been doing it for 18 years and still going strong no call back perfect installation . Great video. Do it this way you'll never have grout cracking loose tiles . And installing this type of floor always grout seal the tile before grouting let it dry then grout clean then seal your grout .

What if you are installing over a concrete subfloor? And why not just seal the tile and the grout all at the same time?
@Kyle9o4
@Kyle9o4 7 жыл бұрын
Concrete subfloors don't require an underlayment. they have "crack isolation" products for settling slabs, in which case you can use a membrane or a mesh tape. I've always sealed the tile after everything is grouted, but with more times than not that wood plank has a texture to it which makes it a bit more tasking to clean during the grout process.

i'm researching tile installation as i'm getting ready to install the same size tile in one of my bedrooms. this video is great in that it offers a very thorough overview of the work to be done. that said, there's more to it than what this video covers, but again this is an awesome overview of the work to be done. in my research the most important thing is the prep work. my house is a bit of a "proving ground" for me. i do all my "firsts" on my house and learn from trial and error before i work on someone else's house. i'm very excited about this project. that DITRA in the video is a must in my opinion. its something you never see people doing. they just tile straight to the concrete floor. nope - not me. i want to get it right. i'm definitely using the the DITRA for my project.

I still use this underlayment on concrete every chance I get. It is a crack isolation membrane and allows for the concrete to equalize its moisture with in its self. They surprised me on getting this video pretty acutely. When setting tile it’s 1/4” back and forth movement to lay over the notches and expel the air. And to water proof a room you also tape up onto the walls. I stay away from the silicone idea and leave it blank. Silicone is only good for 7 years and if it hardens it would be the same as hard packing.

I hired Lowe's to install my kitchen tile. I can do it but my said I'm too busy. I listened and shouldn't have. The tile setter did not check the floor for level. He did not strike lines. After installing backer board he did not seal the seams. When he installed the tile he did so on one long line rather than working in quadrants. He would drop the tile into the thinset, bang each corner and then the middle with his hand and move on to the next tile. You probably guessed the end result. Every tile in every row was not level as he did not do any checking as he laid the tile. The job is full of exposed edges, low grout lines and tiles not level. I called Lowe's 2 days ago and no response from the installation company. Lowe's tells me they have 48 hours to respond. Unfortunately the only solution here is take up the new tile job and start over again. Sometimes, if you have ANY common sense or skill it pays to do it yourself.

No matter what you’ll need a expansion gap for the title so it never buckle due to weather causing the house to expand and shrink but if your titling concrete you usually don’t need that as concrete already has moisture in it so there’s no point. that’s why you use a pre treated sill plates for framing

Sealer on porcelain tile will last about two days. You can't seal glass and don't need to.
@mikemac2888

Longer than that. Ceramic is porous, and this helps repel water and oil spillage and stain protection.

I tiled my kitchen in my last house, but didn’t tile under the dishwasher or stove. It looked fine. I did tile under the fridge because it gets moved regularly. Why do you tile under the appliances. I also applied the tile straight to the slab. No issues with cracking. If I am applying straight to the slab, why do I need layers of other materials? I’m probably doing the floors in the house we’re building, so, I need to know the why for these things. I want to do it right.

I want to install this kind of tile in my living room, but it is in the middle of the house, we have to go through it to go to the bedrooms, to the kitchen, to the back door, and the front door. My concern is that I already know it's going to take me several days to finish, and it is going to be a nightmare while in the process, trying no to step on it. Any ideas on how to deal with that with 5 adults and 2 dogs in the house?
@lowes
@lowes 8 жыл бұрын
Based on your description of the layout, would be pretty tricky. If you follow our installation process you would need to allow curing time for the thinset on uncoupling membrane + about 24 hours for mortar to cure after all the tile is down. Thanks for watching.

Can you access those other rooms through any outside windows? ;)
@1LORENAMONGE
@1LORENAMONGE 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, believe me, I thought of that. Unfortunately two rooms can't be accessed via window. lol But I think I'm going to do it in parts. Tile one part and wait til it's traffic ready, then the other, then the other. So what if it's not perfect? The tile police is not going to come and get me... will it? =D

In ten years when I decide I want something else, how do I remove all this from a concrete foundation?
@lowes
@lowes 7 жыл бұрын
Don't worry...with a little elbow grease, you'll be able to remove it! Just chisel out the tile, then use a floor scraper to remove the old thinset. More details here: www.lowes.com/projects/bed-and-bath/prep-tile-floor/project Thanks for watching!

I think loose lay luxury vinyl tile is a much better choice for self installation. Less tools, less prep, less products, less time & much cheaper overall. I wish I was a more talented handywoman because my handyman sure doesn't seem to want to be to handy around the house.

Jodie h Armstrong alterna is a way better product then ceramic tile, warmer to bare feet, easier to lay down with glue, acrylic grout is used which is way better and it's made with 80 percent stone and don't break like ceramic tile, I lay a ton of this each year and it comes in great styles and Armstrong recommends the grout to the tile you choose

Here's what we have available for wood lock tiles: www.lowes.com/search?searchTerm=wood+lock+tiles. The steps from the video will still be the same, but the sizing of the tiles may slightly vary based on which product you choose. You can find the width and length listed under the product specifications for the tiles you like best. Thanks for your question!

what off set did you use in the installation of this tile? I've been reading on this, and every thing says to use a 1/3 off set? but in this video is not really in any kind of set pattern.
@lowes

Hi, Albert. Manufacturer recommends 33% offset maximum for this type of tile. Might be tough to see in the video but that's what we used. Thanks for watching.
