Thornwood Fire Department Engine 88, Car 2471, Tower Ladder 1, Rescue 75, and Utility 55 responding to a reported structure fire on Palmer Lane West in Thornwood, New York. Car 2472 and Car 2473 from the Thornwood Fire Department also responded to this call, but are not seen in this video. Car 2471 reported the electrical service to the house was on fire and requested ConEd Electric to the scene. Units extinguished the fire and checked for extension. Car 2471 reported the electrical meter had blown off the house and caused structural damage and requested the Mount Pleasant Building Department to the scene.
The units seen responding are:
Engine 88 - 2010 Sutphen Monarch (1500GPM/750GWT)
Car 2471 - 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe
Tower Ladder 1 - 1998 Sutphen (1500GPM/0GWT/95FT MM)
Rescue 75 - 2005 Pierce Dash (1500GPM/500GWT)
Utility 55 - 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
This video was taken on April 19th, 2017.

the rescue in particular didn't need to back up, if you pause at 3:43 you'll see there was about 3-5 feet from the curb to his front wheel, he for sure could have made the turn.

@@pipesmoker4238 I get what you're saying, but the more time you have to spend turning around in the middle of the road disrupting the flow of traffic, the more dangerous it becomes. Making one swing in a few seconds and being on your way is much safer for your crew and everybody around you.

Time to either modify/move the station or get the far shoulder of the road widened so the trucks can get out of the station easier. Great video and nice looking trucks.
@LowHudEmergency
@LowHudEmergency 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Modifying the station or moving it would probably be too expensive. And there isn't too much space to widen the road, only a few feet and then there are railroad tracks. The problem is the way the station was built on that slight angle, it makes it really hard for the trucks to make that turn.

We moved out of tight quarters of a station before I was even a member at my department. With updated apparatus and the needs changing we couldn't fit in the old station. Now our firehouse is out of an old warehouse building and we have probably one of the biggest/roomiest squad bays around. A lot of the city volunteer stations around here aren't so fortunate and literally have to spec each truck to the bay size. They've had temporary trucks due to serious repair needed that are small so they can fit it inside but not able to fit all the equipment adequately. Needless to say, old warehouses make excellent firehouses. You have office space, lounge area, radio room, and we even have a commercial kitchen/hall that we rent out. Actually all of our training in the squad bay we do, we almost never have to pull the trucks out

It just wouldn't be practical. Aside from getting out of the firehouse, most of the streets in their district are navigable with the tower and having a tiller requires a second driver which can be difficult for a lot of these departments who are pressed for manpower. Thanks for watching!

@LowHudEmergency
@LowHudEmergency 2 жыл бұрын
Sutphen makes all different kinds of fire apparatus, but they are definitely known for their tower ladders. I'd consider Rescue 75 to be a rescue pumper. It has a full sized pump, 500 gallon water tank, and a decent amount of hose. Wet rescues generally have small pumps, carry very little water, and very little hose.

Its a 100% volunteer department. I happen to think they were out the door pretty quick; I think it was under 4 minutes from the time the tones went out until the engine hit the road. And besides, everybody has good and bad days. Its great that you guys can consistently get out quickly, but I'm sure you have days where that's not the case. Not to mention you only have one video to judge this department off of. There's no reason to be so negative.

there must be sth wrong when the Ladder Truck can't even get out of the station without reversing in order to manage the turn. Why not purchase it with rear-steering axle? Question is rescue 75 technically a rescue engine or a squad like in the FDNY
@LowHudEmergency
@LowHudEmergency 4 жыл бұрын
Terms like "squad" often have different meanings in different places. I would consider Rescue 75 to be a rescue-engine. It carries rescue equipment but also has a pump and a water tank. It probably carries extremely limited HazMat equipment, but nothing to the extent the FDNY Squad companies carry.

@@gabrielking3349 I've heard rescue-engines called "squads" as almost a slang term quite a lot around here. LowHudEmergency ok I sure alright but, Hershey Pennsylvania volunteers (100% volunteers) they are moving with urgency and out the door in the same time a city fire department would be (keep in mind the are also in the middle of no where AND they also have to compete with tourists traffic soooo with that being said...this response time TO A STRUCTURE FIRE is very poor
@LowHudEmergency
@LowHudEmergency 5 жыл бұрын
Well to have the same response time as a career department, I would assume they always have manpower at the firehouse, which is not the case in most of the volunteer departments around here. Now in this particular video, I will admit that some members were at the firehouse when the call came in preparing to attend a drill, but they still had to wait for additional manpower to arrive. They will usually wait until they have a full crew before responding (to a reasonable extent), especially for a potential structure fire. Different places operate differently, and for most of the smaller volunteer departments around here, waiting four or five minutes before rolling a piece of apparatus is not uncommon.

Ever heard the phrase, Slow is smooth, Smooth is fast? Its not about zero urgency, its about restrained urgency. Firefighters would love literally nothing more than to run to their trucks and go screaming down the road full tilt, and many have done so....right into an early grave. Fact of the matter is rushing causes more accidents and deaths than stopping to think for 5 seconds does. This department did everything right here and if you don't believe me, go watch some videos of the FDNY. One of the best in the nation and they average a 2 minute response from time of call to leaving the house. They walk to their rigs too.

LowHudEmergency what you just said touched me and now I agree because the ladder truck and the engine had to go out and then back up and then go out again so I’m sorry

What's the hurry, it's not your house burning, over 2 minutes for the 1st truck to leave the hall, pretty lackadaisical.

Its a volunteer department, the firehouse isn't always staffed. There happened to be a handful of guys there because they were assembling to attend a drill with some neighboring departments, but often times there is no one there. So they were actually out much faster than average.

In our town there were 3 trucks, and one fireman always on site. He'd take the emergency call, crank the town siren, and head out right away with the first truck. All of the men kept their turnout gear in the trunks of their car; unless they were driving one of the other two trucks, they'd head straight to the incident. (Unless the station was on the way to the fire; then they'd hop on the truck if it hadn't left yet. If it had left, they'd continue on to the fire.)

I don't und the need for US trucks that are so big (except ariel ladder). Europe seems to be able to use fast nimble trucks without issue, carry a crew of five inside.

I've only ever worked with American fire apparatus and I can only speak from my experiences, but the larger apparatus seems to hold a lot more equipment, and particularly water, both of which are very important in manpower-strained rural fire departments, which unfortunately have become the majority of volunteer fire departments in the U.S. Also, it seems as though the cabs themselves are larger than European apparatus making them more comfortable and easier to put gear on while in route to an emergency. And outside of the older, larger cities, most of the country doesn't deal with the really narrow roads that a lot of Europe has to deal with. This video is a poor example because the firehouse was built at a bad angle, but for the most part, the apparatus doesn't struggle to navigate most of the roads around here.

No, this is a volunteer department. They have to wait for members to respond from home or work or wherever they may be. It may seem slow, but it really is not very.
