Hi Andrew, love John Martyn, my introduction to him was the Radio 1 Live in concert cd, which has most of the Glastonbury gig from 1986. The best live concert I’ve ever heard, the cd is difficult to get hold of, but I really really really recommend it, it is phenomenal. All the best!

Thank you for the video. I'll be joining the vinyl world soon. Resurrected my 1970's Thorens turnable. Still have a little more work to get it to decent condition, but that work should be done in a few weeks. I don't plan on buying albums I already have on CD (except for maybe DSOTM), but will search those gems that live on the margins or I missed buying altogether.

Massive John Martyn fan here Andrew. Saw him live many times in the 80s and 90s. Solid Air is a masterpiece and probably my favourite. I have a lovely audiophile pressing of it. Others that followed that I think are also of very high standard are Inside Out, Sunday's Child and my second and third favourite of his total output respectively - One World and Grace and Danger (the latter being his marriage split up album). Though sometimes painfully personal, often the subject of an artist's greatest work - think Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. I have most of John's 80s output but it was quite patchy and all too often overproduced with the sheen of that decade. John Martyn's best work is much more authentic than that. Hope that helps!

John Martyn is up there with the greats for me. His 70's Island albums are superb. If you have got up to Solid Air move on to Sundays Child from 1975 and then One World from 1977 next. If you want Martyn in a more experimental mode listen to Outside In which followed Solid Air but possibly pushed the boundaries for some. His last classic was Grace and Danger which is his divorce album and is an emotional listen. Beyond the Island years things get a little bit hit and miss and a bit to smooth or bland, but if you come across a copy of And or On The Cobbles snap them up as they are the best of the later albums.

Glad to see the voyage is still a sail! I'm sure I've seen you show John Coltrane and Miles Davis LPs in the past though. Am I going mad, or do you keep your jazz records separately? On a related note, I was watching an old video of yours recently where you went through all your CDs, and in the jazz section I could figure out all but two of them - the ones by McCoy Tyner and Louis Armstrong - are you able to satisfy my curiosity and tell me which albums is you have by those two please? Keep up the good work Andrew!

Hi, the Louis Armstrong CD is a compilation called "The Louis Armstrong Story" and McCoy Tyner is "The Real McCoy" from 1967, the first track "Passion Dance" is excellent! All my Jazz albums are stored together over on the right hand side of my bottom shelf so they will be the final episode 🙂

I’ve been loving the newly released Beatles Red demix/remix. Ticket to Ride is especially killer! I’m hoping that the Anthology and Live at the BBC are next to get this treatment: to strip away the girls screaming, separate out the vocals and instruments, and create new stereo mixes. What do you think, Andrew? I really value your opinion.
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic 5 ай бұрын
I think it's a great idea and would love to see it happen. I'd just be surprised if it was any kind of priority in the next few years, unless they do a remastered anthology on to streaming, in which case they might want those albums freshened up and back on sale.

An interesting thirty minutes. I found myself checking out a few things afterwards which is always good. I suspect that you were perhaps slightly the wrong age regarding Pink Floyd. I was around 16 when Animals appeared and it was quite an important release from my point of view. Wish You Were Here was also perhaps their high point. These things are however very subjective. I agree about the Division Bell and The Wall I still do not rate. Occasionally I do retry with a fresh listen though! I'm no expert with John Martyn but would recommend One World. Small Hours is a superb track. You do to need to listen though. It is a slow build up. Give it a chance. I originally heard it on John Peel's radio show late at night. Keep up the good work.

Evening Andrew, another good review. Silly Question Time : I'm looking to up-grade my Hi-Fi. I was given a Great Amp, but I've gone off it. Reason being, there's no control of Treble or Bass. So what Amp have you that we see in your KZfaq Vids. And what Turntable have you. I would like to buy a Technics Turntable, but, we are talking quite a lot of Money. Are you happy with yours? Or are you thinking of upgrading too? Thanks
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic 5 ай бұрын
I've got a Marantz PM6006UK amp, very basic bass and treble dials that to be honest I don't touch, if the musics made right then it shouldn't need it, but I can understand if people's own hearing makes for example a treble tweak required. My turntable is a Rega P3 with an audio Technica VM540ML cartridge upgrade, very happy with it, hopefully no change required there for many years.

Guessing you own the joy of Wibbling Rivalry, fourteen minutes of verbal mayhem! Tho not strictly an Oasis cd it's Oas*s. Once is indeed probably Liam's strongest song... but I'll admit, I remain in the Noel camp. Animals gets quite a bashing, surrounded by absolute classic Pink Floyd albums of the 70s, but I do like it... with you re Division Bell tho... and let's not mention The Endless River (altho I just did)... ha ha Poodle Haired Rock, yeah not my cup of tea that lot.

Bio-picks of The Beatles is, in my opinion, a bad idea. It just feels wrong. I can’t really explain why, but when I heard the news about this I just cringed at the whole idea. No matter what they do, it will only be a small part of the true experience. Film makers always tend to favor entertainment over fact. I hope I’m wrong, but it just feels wrong to me.
