LR Baggs Lyric Pickup Installation (How to install a guitar pickup)

In this video Ill be walking you through the installation process for the LR Baggs Lyric microphone pickup on a acoustic guitar. Since this guitar is a new build Ill be marking out and drilling a 1/2 inch hole in the tail block with a brad point bit. From there I install the end pin jack, then the microphone pickup on the bridge patch, then the volume control and the battery pouch. I also cover how I like to manage the wiring harness to keep it from rattling on the top or back and keep it hidden. Along the way Ill be covering the do's and dont's of how to install an acoustic guitar pickup.

I can't possibly heap enough praise on the simple LR Baggs Lyric pickup system. Its now 2023, and you'd think that newer, more advanced pickup systems like the Anthem or Fishman offerings might sound better, but that's not been my experience at all. I recently installed a Fishman Rare Earth Mic Blend system in a standard-sized Aria dreadnaught and a Fishman Rare Earth PowerTap system in a similar-sized Takamine, and they simply do NOT compare to the warmth and natural beauty of the sound produced by a Baggs Lyric system in a Larson Bros. Jumbo. There is no meaningful comparison whatsoever! I absolutely LOVE the Lyric pickup system!

So I used a step drill bit until almost 1/2" then used a sharp 1/2" drill bit to finish it off. Had trouble placing the p/u as the glue pad didn't stick after repositioning. Am going to use spare pads to see if that works. Some tack cloth and dropping the end pins like you showed made the difference!! Thanks again for your EXCELLENT tutorial!

Me again, same evening. Got it wired up and wires "clamped", brand new #D'Addario Phospor Bronze EJ39 .012-.052. These are my favorites at the moment but also used the baby brother Phosphor Bronze EJ38 Light 10-47, which after 2 I went back to the 12s. Plugged in and it worked just perfect. Didn't give it a listening session as it's late but everything worked and no rattling wires. Thanks one more time, your video really helped.

Thank you! I don’t have any for sale just yet, but I plan to. Need to work out pricing and custom options. Just had my 2nd child a few months back so my shop time has been limited, but that should improve in a few more months

excellent video but for anyone trying this at home i would not recommend starting with a 1/2" drill bit. step-up drill bits or a hand reemer are a better option to avoid blowouts. also covering the spot you're drilling with masking tape will help prevent blowouts.

Thanks. Great overview. This is very helpful to me as I look at this one vs a fishman soundhole pickup or a seymour duncan and the install is like. On the volume control, does it overlap the soundhole edge with the little lip on the volume control? It would be nice to hear various pickups to understand which one sounds best for my ears and taste.

Hey there! Sorry I missed this. I haven’t been YouTubing much lately. Had my 2nd child a few months back. Anyways, it can overlap the sound hole, but it doesn’t have to. The way I brace around the sound hole left a little space for the lip of the volume control to stay hidden just inside the sound hole.

Such a great video - great idea on the internal wood block and how you made it! Surprised you didn't get any chipout on the outside. I was under the impression one works up to a 1/2" bit. Thoughts on this p/u for a 12string? Thank-you

Thanks! Im glad you liked it. Brad point and forstner bits are the safest options, but they have to be sharp. As soon as they become dull Im scared to use them on things like the outside of a guitar. I havent tested this pickup on a 12 string, but dont see any reason why it wouldnt perform well.
