Why are people in some of the richest countries in the world so miserable when so much of the economic and social data show massive material progress? Where did all that anger and anxiety come from that is manifested in populism, terrorism, and worsening well-being and mental health? Are we, despite the massive gains in material progress in recent decades, living in an age of insecurity?

Excellent lecture covering various subjects and giving new insights ,but I have only one question Q. Why didn't u cover the British colonization part while comparing wealth from past to present. It seems very easy to sit in a UK and talk about increasing wealth but I just want to divert your atte tion to points made by Mr. Shashi Tharoor that before British came to India. India's trade was 24%to world GDP but when they left it was about 2% and similar response were recorded from different countries as well. It could have been nice if u included that aspect as well. What was the status of countries in terms of trade before and after colonization?

The core subject was simply astonishing It is a current issue to analyse the influence of media and journalists when reporting a new and a column giving opinion. Should the media stop reporting some information tied to disasters, murdr, and or other pessimistic subjects? Should they review the terms spreading that despite the fact that there's a catastrophe there is a positive future?.

This is embarrassing for the LSE, using a book by Steven Pinker, a psycholinguist and NOT an economist or political scientist, whose book in question has been criticised by actual experts for serious factual inaccuracies and cherry picking. This talk by Ivory tower academics lack intellectual riguour and honesty. Makes me ashamed as an LSE alumnus.

Rham R I’m an LSE graduate myself you idiot, I’ve read more books than you will in your lifetime. It’s not about being pessimistic or optimistic, it’s about the facts. You seem like the type who will swallow what anyone tells them without critical thought.
