The offense and defense split 2-2 on a goal line tackling drill at LSU's fall practice Friday. The Tigers worked as a full squad and in full pads for the first time.

The goal of the drill is for the running back to get through the cones. This small area is simulating the area the running back has when trying to run through the line on a goal line formation. If the DB can stop the forward movement and divert it to the side, you have to imagine there would be D linemen on each side trying to tackle the RB as well(along with their opposing O linemen) and that they would crash into and stop the movement all together, effectively stuffing up and stopping the running back. Goal line formations are all about stuffing up the line and trying to stop as much forward progress as possible. If the DB can divert the RB 5ft to the right or left, there's a good chance they're going to run into someone and someone else is going to get their hands on him too. ***EDIT*** Before someone starts talking down on me. I know the hole in the line is going to be A LOT smaller. This is just a drill to train both the RB to commit quickly to one side and try to power through, and for the DB to assess, react, and stop the forward progress. The extra space helps them both out for these purposes.

The rb wins this drill most of the time because they are moving forward while the defensive player is staying stationary and catching them. The only way for the defensive player to win is by guessing which side the rb is gonna go and just coming downhill on the whistle.

Totally agree with you, developmentally that would work great. Yet I believe it’s also a good thing to add spectator pressure to these drills since they’re in a D1 College. Everyone is always watching so they must practice this way as well and perform as such.
@YardratZ Жыл бұрын
Tbh, during this time, LSU sucked at developing star players. Did we with three star recruits But the drill isn’t an every day drill. I’m pretty sure this was the first few days of practice, probably spring ball. So gathering everyone. Setting the tone.

Are some of you not paying attention? Ball Carrier needs to be inside the lines to win. Doesn't matter if the defender gets pushed back, as long as that happens. If Adrian Peterson steps out of bounds before he hits the goal line, it doesn't matter if he blows up the guy in front of him, he's still out of bounds.
@cbb62788 жыл бұрын

@johncalhoun27438 жыл бұрын
Daryl Dixon Very true he wouldve broken the tackle but its fournettes job to stay inbounds.
@cbb62788 жыл бұрын
Johnny Cash Hence why the title is misleading. If it would have said pushed out of bounds, or even as simple as stopped from crossing the line. But to just say stopped I as well as what appears to be the majority took it as literally stopped him or prevented him from going any further.

@lilfunny12347 жыл бұрын
He got him outside the cones, so he won the drill. It would be almost impossible for a linebacker to stop a running back dead in their tracks in this drill, unless he was a complete monster or made a perfect tackle. The running back gets an advantage because they get a full head of steam at the goal line and the linebacker has to wait to see what side the running back goes too, then breakdown and try to tackle them.

The goal of the drill is not to let the defender force you outside of the line. It's meant to see if the ball carrier can power forward without being pushed aside.

it's harder to tackle then run the ball, if roles were flipped the ball carrier would have the advantage all the time. Tackler gotta get lower, and they react to the ball carrier moving after they do.
