I grew up living across the street from Mitchell "Booty"Woods. He played trombone in Count Basie's band. He toured a lot, but when he was home I loved being over his house while he practiced. I didn't realize at the time how much of a historical musician I was in the presence of. I got to meet Count Basie as well. The tour bus was on our block and the whole band was there at Mr. Woods house. Great memories.

>>Comments from Liner Notes by Chris Sheridan: "An unusual soloing sequence unfolds. First are the trombones exchanging short sequences - Henry Coker (4 bars), Quentin Jackson (4), Benny Powell (8), Jackson (4), Coker (8), Powell (4) and Jackson with the last word (4). Then it is the turn of the trumpets-three sequences of Al Aarons (4), Sonny Cohn (4), Snooky Young (4) and Thad Jones (4). “And that was the brass section,” Basie exclaims at the end, with just a hint of pride."

Very crisp video and sound from Stockholm, 1962. Featuring the Brass Section. The details of this performance are an endless fascination, from the groove of the rhythm section and the way Sonny Payne plays sticks on his high hat during Basie's introductory piano solo to the way the unison muted trumpets break into harmony on the head. Piano: Count Basie Alto Sax: Marshal Royal and Frank Wess Tenor Sax: Eric Dixon, Frank Foster (arranger), Frank Wess Baritone Sax: Charlie Fowlkes Trumpet: Al Aarons, Sonny Cohn, Thad Jones, Snooky Young Trombone: Henry Coker, Quentin Jackson, Benny Powell Guitar: Freddie Green Bass: Eddie Jones Drums: Sonny Payne.

Butter! (Quentin Jackson) The men on top. Check Snooky out while they are out front.....thats how it should feel. And Sonny.....sheeeeeeeeiiit. I have it on good authority that Sonny once took the "O" off the count basie banner and pissed in count's brief case because he wanted a raise. Buddy had chops.....Sonny had it all and then some...he invented the "falling down the stairs" fill. (see live at newport and corner pocket at the sands).
