First of all, NEVER take over her brother's policy. Buy her own. Secondly, DO NOT handle the funeral no matter how incompetent her brothers were. That's why they have their clan. She should've just contributed money and then stay out of it.

This can only happen when Hmong people stop judging those who don’t do extravagant funerals. Unfortunately the Hmong people are a people based on reputation. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone watches what everyone else is doing. Me, I could care less as many of us are doing now. The ways are changing, just not fast enough. Change is coming, we just have to stop judging others for what they do.

It's the norm because Hmong parents don't know how to be parents. That's why their children end up hating each other. First of all, the daughter should've never took over her brother's policy. Just let it lapse on it's own. Buy her own policy. Secondly, no matter how incompetent her brothers are, let their clan take over and deal with it. She should just tell them that she is only a daughter and has a new life with her husband. She can contribute monetarily but otherwise she is out of it.

Whether sons stick up for their parents or not, daughters should stay out of it. Let the brothers and their clan deal with it. Otherwise, parents will need to make it clear from the very beginning that they don't have a gender preference about these things. The problems start when parents aren't clear. They want to be Hmong but then they also ask a lot from their daughters when they can't get it from their sons. I'm glad my parents were NEVER like that. They made it clear who was to play which role in our family. And if my brother and nyab fell short on expectations my parents just learned to live with it. They didn't run to their daughters and vauv to pick up the slack so that my brother and nyab feel upstaged. If they were unhappy with my brother then they went to the clan, not to their daughters. This story is messed up because of parents who to be Hmong but not.
