wow, thank you so much for that! I've always found found it little strange that Chabad doesn't teach mussar. I know different people connote different inflections to its meaning, but to me it seems the simplest is the best: ethics, perhaps with some psychology, some reverence of discipline, but, in short, ethics. it seems almost reflexive for people trying to justify the nonlubavitch nature of mussar to quote (if I'm not mistaken) Chofetz Chaim saying that one Jew should not criticize another Jew, unless they're in a brotherhood seeking the elevation of behavior, one takes another aside to offer constructive criticism; so that no one is seen reproaching another as if he is the moral better and a friend doesn't have to suffer in silence without being able to try to help. but one isn't TELLING someone what to do because they all signed a contract explicitly asking others to share their suggestions without being heavy-handed when they see another slipping. so with mussar, it seems to me it is only suggestions for those hungry for suggestions. one wouldn't be reading mussar unless it was welcome. so if its welcome advice I don't think it falls under the category of COMMANDING YOUR FELLOW (which is of course reserved (although not in an absolute sense) for God alone. the goal of mussar seems to be to water seeds of discipline to bear the fruit of mitzvot throughout the world. who doesn't need a little discipline? (someone pushing themselves too far aesthetically, I suppose, but who sees that nowadays?!) (I apologize if this is overly simplistic for such a grand issue; I am only a neophyte, somewhat recently 're'turned to Judaism).
