Something I have done to all of my Lee sizing dies is removed the sharp angle / line in the die where the bullet first makes contact. I use a dremel with skinny fine sand paper cone, then go over it with polish and something softer to buff / polish it. I remove very little and just kind of round that initial sharp edge. The dies work much smoother and don't require any lube.

Elvis, the number one thing you put on the table, The base of the bullet is the most important part of the bullet, any flaws in its shape will affect the accuracy and overall performance. some people don't care and think that is a mild thing, My question is to them, Why do this at all then? what you demonstrated here is a way to uniform your bullet bases while sizing and there is a huge benefit to doing that. Your experience is showing because you have been doing this for years now. Great Video dude, keep up the good work. -Dave

Good one Elvis, I take a drop or two of some of the honey-like consistency case lube that I've had for years and mix it with denatured alcohol in a two ounce or so spritz bottle, just a spritz or two and swirl like you do. Really does help.

Elvis I loaded up 100 rounds with my 180 gr .40 cal pc bullets and lubed just before sizing with case lube like in your video. Went to the range fired all 100 and guess what not a trace of lead. I've been fighting this caliber for over a year now with very little luck. Only difference I can think of is it either prevents some kind of damage to the powder coat while sizing that I was unable to see or there is just enough lube on the bullet to help it out until there is a good gas seal from obturation. Thanks for your help.👍

I use the same process as I do with brass. Quick spray of Hornady Unique case lube/alcohol mix in a plastic bag, shake, dry and size. Never had a problem even sizing down .362 to .358. Definitely tell when you get an oversized one, but not much more pressure needed. No P/C stripping off.

I've been using RCBS Case Lube-2 when sizing PC bullets. I never thought to use the swirl method though. It's water soluble, so it shouldn't cause issues, and the bullets can be rinsed in warm water to remove it.

Whether it's safe, I don't know, but I do know you need more powder under a plated bullet to get the same velocity of a cast or coated bullet. For example, 124gr 9mm coated 3.8gr Titegroup, and 124gr XTreme plated 4.2gr are a both around 130-132 power factor.

Elvis, I have a question and cant find answers anywhere. You are the one person I know who might be able to answer this 👇 Can I make cuts on the outside of my copper jackets to get them to expand better? Like to get the jacket to peel off faster and expose the lead core. Or is this a bad Idea. Old western movies used to do it so IDK

Elvis you should try pledge furniture spray. Works great & it's cheap
@DavidSmith-ef1ws3 жыл бұрын
boddyxpolitic I use Pledge also. I don’t spray directly on the bullets, I spray a little on a paper towel and lightly lube my finger tips as needed to keep things running smoothly. Doesn’t take much. Does anyone know if there are any chemicals in Pledge that could harm the powder? I’ve read that ammonia products are bad for powder and primers.

I also use a mix of coconut oil and ISO when you can't get lanolin. Works great for cases and PC bullets. Smells good too. One spritz into a zip storage bag with a few hundred, just shake and size. At worst, roll on a old towel afterwards, if you feel like any residual. Thanks Elvis
@U812GREEN3 жыл бұрын
Some bullets get more lube than others but what doesn't stay with the bullet is deposited in the sizing die, so it evens out. I always give mine a spritz of my diy one shot then shake and dump them and let the alcohol evaporate and they are ready to size

I think it was Gunblue that turned me on to Lee lube. Little dab in a gallon Ziploc bag and a hundred cases for example, roll'em around for a bit, and viola. Fast and easy, especially to ease the strain on carbide dies for pistol.

👍👍👍I like Gunblue as well
@vdog47993 жыл бұрын
Me too. I got my first reloading book from the one gun blue was showing on his show. I haven't seen him for awhile now. I hope hes ok.i have found that when residing cases with lee lube if I let it dry it gums up the sizing die and I have to scrub it occasionally
@TheSuburban153 жыл бұрын
I pour some bullets into a box and spray them with Hornady aerosol case lube. Doesn't take much, and just hitting one side of the bullet is enough to keep the die lubed. I have a tube of the Lee lube, I might try that some day.
@alwrapeiii49543 жыл бұрын
I’m a little curious. If you size a powder coated bullet doesn’t something have to extrude to get to final size? Admittedly lube will help reduce the force involved in sizing but if the final powder coated diameter is greater than the sizing die doesn’t something have to give? If it does then where does it go? It makes sense that a ring of powder coat or lead could result depending on the diameter of the cast bullet. What’s hard to see is how you could prevent that with lube. But I may be wrong and I’m sure glare to see Elvis back to provide us with such food for thought. It’s been a long time and I for one am enjoying the experience.
@gascheck81513 жыл бұрын
Powder coating will add 6 to 8 thousands of a inch diameter to your projectile obviously they must be resized. I use Hornady one Shot Lube. Just spray and size. If you want to iron out the bullet and take off any "rim" reverse the bullet through the die. Two passes. For target grade accuracy I always do two passes through the sizer. Up one way then reverse. Try it and you will see a increase in accuracy.
@shadowcastre3 жыл бұрын
Ermine alox... Wow.. 6 to 8 thousands is a very thick coating. I've never had more that 3 thousands thick powder coat.
@davidycedo16063 жыл бұрын
Just a little DCL or home lube works wonders. I have been doing this for year. Tens of thousands done with dcl . Just a reminder don't use harbor freight black it will destroy your sizer its abrasive powder coating.

hey Elvis! how about a video on how you clean led out of a barrel or cylinder, if any letting happens to occur. Thanks for the video, use the man!
@CreativeWarrior-3 жыл бұрын
Best thing to do is prevent leading by slugging your barrel and choosing the right size mold for that barrel. Having done everything right, you should never need to remove leading. If you feel like there may be some after a range day, fire some jacketed rounds through. That should blow any leading right through, no scrubbing needed!

I use the lanolin isopropyl lube a couple spritz's per hundred bullets. I don't like lee or rcbs case lube as it's water based if I'm not mistaken. IDK if that would ton my gunpowder over time on loaded rounds 🤷♂️

Hi Elvis. I lube my bullets to, but have you ever taken a long term test to se how the powderpaint holds up ? I havent done this my self, but i think some petrolbased lubes may desolve the paint on the long run. You don`t have some bullets that you casted and paintet 2-3 years ago to compare the ones you made now ?
@johnndavis76473 жыл бұрын
When I'm sizing brass in a carbide size I spray a little wd40 in my hands And run my hands around in the bucket of brass. This tiny amount of lubes on the cases makes sizing the brass easier. I am wondering, since PC bullets are kind of slick already if the wd40 trick might help in sizing them too?

I have heard that the plastic in the powder coat will eventually interact with the nitroglycerin in the powder. What is the max time of loaded cartridge to shooting do you recommend?
@CreativeWarrior-3 жыл бұрын
I think people hear a lot of things and worry so much about them that they stop doing their hobby. I'd be more concerned about storing ammo near any ammonia-based cleaners or solvents than just a bit of powder-coat on a bullet. Don't let anything you hear affect what you're doing. Keep going, Adam!

From where and from who do you purchase these blue coated bullets? Looks like they should reduce copper fouling.
@CreativeWarrior-3 жыл бұрын
David, he's casting these from a lead alloy at home with a bullet mold, swirling them in powdercoat like an Eastwood Ford Light Blue and baking the coat on. That coating is the jacket, and it's tough stuff. There is no copper at all in those bullets and there is no fouling.
@mikekupetsky68793 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that we should size before we powder coat? My Lee mold casts 357 bullets about .002 - .005 over. So if I powder coat first it's gonna take most of the paint off after sizing
