A little disappointed Disney continuous to find every possible way of avoiding having to actually say their main characters are gay. But I still liked the film and hopefully we'll get more than just. "up to our interpretation"

an interesting video however, it was kinda foolhardy, that is if we the audience are to completely ignore the people that actually made the movie. The Luca Director Enrico Casarosa - whose youth and childhood friendship with another Alberto inspired the story - has insisted that the movie is not romantic in any way. In an interview with Screen Rant, in response to a question about queer people being able to see themselves in the story, Casarosa said "We were quite aware that we wanted to talk about that time in life before boyfriends and girlfriends. So there's an innocence and a focus on the friendship side. I feel like the story would be a little different in that it's slightly more complicated when romance comes in."

@Ezzylryb 2 жыл бұрын
And the thing is, she was also protecting Alberto when she found out. If you pay attention to how she says "Stay back" it wasn't because she was afraid, but because she was trying to scare him away in case someone came in like Ercole who could've killed Alberto. When Luca reacted, that was the point she realizes that Luca has always known Alberto is a sea monster or Luca himself IS one.

People forcing their perspective of friendship is just the same as people forcing their ships down everyone’s throat. And your comment specifically talked about shipping kid characters as if people that do that our somehow perverted for doing so. As if more than half of the media we consume as a society doesn’t feature teenage protagonists.

@@cahasaper it’s just that your comment CAPITALIZES “kid”, which implies that you don’t support ships including children. In my opinion (which relates to kene’s opinion), as long as a child ship isn’t sexualized, you don’t go crazy over the ship (which can be said about any ship), and/or is implied _canonically_ that one or both kids like each other, then I’m okay with it. If you ask me, the only ship I have that involves kids under the age of 13 is Tweek and Craig from South Park. I mean, even before they got together they were my favorite characters. I didn’t even know people shipped them until the episode where they got together! I think they’re dynamic plus both being my favorite characters just made me shipping them not surprising.

9:38 I liked how it subverted the classic “liar revealed” trope. After Giulia discovers that Luca is also a sea monster, she urged him to get out of the town, but not because she was upset about being deceived, but because she was concerned about their well-being if they stayed in a city with humans that want to kill them out of bigotry. Because she understood why they didn’t tell her about their identity (I mean, we saw it with Alberto)

I get how the Vespa thing is really dumb, but you also have to remember that Luca and Alberto are both sea monsters so they don’t know much about the surface world and they also can do pretty dumb things because they lack understanding of certain things. They want to get the vespa to explore the world, it’s just that the goals of Luca and Alberto are different, Luca wants to learn more about the world outside the ocean and Alberto wants to make a better life for himself after his father abandoned him. That’s why when Luca hears he can learn new things by going to school instead of traveling the world he switches his main goal to going to school. Alberto doesn’t have the same goal and doesn’t like the idea as much, so his goal of obtaining the Vespa is still the main goal for him.

To be honest, I don't really understand the criticism towards this movie. Obviously it's not for everyone and if you don't like it that much, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But I've seen people criticize this movie for having low stakes and not being as memorable as Pixar's other movies, and I just don't understand why that's a bad thing. Some of their movies can be more laid back and relaxed, they don't all have to be emotional masterpieces. Yes, the more memorable Pixar movies are definitely superior, but there's nothing wrong with having a laid back movie like Luca every once in a while. If you're reading this and you're part of the group I just described, here's a word of advice: View Luca as it's own movie, and stop comparing it to Pixar's other works. I think you'll enjoy it a lot more that way. Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

I feel like folks who complain about the shipping and folks saying there's gay subtext/allegories going on should ask themselves this one important question and give themselves a completely honest answer: If Luca or Alberto were a girl or swapped places with Julia, would you still complain(or complain the same amount) about people shipping these children or saying there's some kindve romantic subtext? If children are too young to think about or have homosexual thoughts then we should have the same attitude towards heterosexuality. There is no difference between the two besides the gender we as living beings are attracted to Edit: Why is this blowing up so much lmao Edit 2: I guess I should've expected a mess to happen. I don't really mind if you see it as platonic, I just put up the suggestion to think for a small bit if it's just interpretation alone and not an internal bias as exposure to negative aspects of society can implant stuff like bias in us even without us knowing until we sit down and think about it

I don't like people telling others that it's gay and it's a fact or others saying it's NOT gay and it's a fact. If it's gay for you or if it's just friendship for you because you relate then it's okay. Some people dislike this movie because it wasn't a gay romance. Others dislike this movie because of all the people that wanted this to be a gay movie. Some don't want their children to be learning about sex and sexual orientation at an early age because of reviews or viewers who might rave about gay or anti-gay. Basically this movie may be good, but the aura surrounding a certain viewer base makes the main viewer pull (parents and kids) not want to bother with the drama. Atleast that's what I get from it.

I watched this film recently, I really enjoyed it to be honest. The final message of the film was sweet. As a queer teen myself, I did pick up on allegories. It was very comforting to me to be honest since my parents are very against lgbtq+. Heck, Luca and Alberto's friendship reminded me of my own with my best friend that I met back when I was 13. After a few months we suddenly clicked after realizing our mutual interests in band, musicals, books, and science. I admired her a lot during the little time we had together. During the final quarter of the school I realized I had feelings for her. She caused me to realize the that I also like girls. However, she was moving away during the summer and I would be moving a year later myself. The train scene at the end of the film Luca just reminded me of when we said goodbye to each other for the last time. We hugged really hard and as she walked away we kept looking back and waving at each other. I don't know exactly how she felt, but once she was out of my line of vision I cried for the first time over a friend. (I was used to having brief friendships at best since I'm a military kid) I think it was the first time I developed that close of a bond with someone outside of my family. ................................................................. However, just like in the end credits, we still keep in touch to this day! We're hoping to meet up during the summer once we graduate! We even had the idea of having her visit my home country Puerto Rico! I could take her to see all of the beautiful nature and beaches there and have her meet my family! That's what we're hoping to do that is. Let's see how that goes. Okay besides that tangent the film Luca was truly an enjoyable film for me personally. Like it was said in the video, I found charming. It was also hilarious in the humor department. I do agree with the final act did feel a bit rushed, but I don't feel it takes away from the film too much. This was a great film to watch especially since it's summer time right now.

That’s probably projection and is probably why people in the lgbtq community thought the movie was a gay allegory. Because it most closely describe their feelings and how they were treated. Just like the movie could have resonated with Jewish folk and their treatment. I’m pan my self and i didn’t really project that they were gay because I wasn’t treated like they were and was fully accepted so I was able to make both platonic and Romantic relationships and better differentiate the two. So all I saw were three kids friendship and sea monsters. And ye luka and Alberto were at the age to know if they liked each other romantically since they’re like 12-14.

You said clearly this movie wasn't for everybody, so I want too, to tell what I thought of the movie. Beware of the spoilers. With me, the movie resonated greatly enough to put me in tears. When I was a kid I was neglected completely by my family, and since I wouldn't learn to socialize, that also impacted on how I couldn't really make friends, so when I started high school and at some point I would start spending time with just anybody, I would become kinda possesive towards them, sharing all their interests and I would take this staged behaviour where I'd be completely sure of myself and try to be the leader who would fix everyone's problem. Of course after some time truth would come to light, my fear leading me to act jealous and such, and that would end up with me even more shattered. Eventually things would come to be and I'd find this group of friends who love me no matter what, and since they let me be myself, far from perfect, I'd regain trust and finally find a place. Alberto's journey, though really fast paced, is exactly what I've gone throughout my life, and therefore I really loved the movie. When he said "you took me out from the island, Luca. I'm okay", that brought me to tears.

I didn’t have high hopes for this movie when it’s trailer was release, I told my mom that it wouldn’t be as successful or memorable as other Pixar movies because it wouldn’t have much of a plot (story and plot is different: Example Et is about an alien stuck on earth with a boy (story) and the boy tries to help him by trying to communicate with the ET’s family (plot). What I meant by plot was that there were not stakes, goal or urgency. I was half right, the plot was not really there as Luca can go as: 2 mermaid boys adventure the land and then...... people try to catch them.... But the movie doesn’t need a plot, it’s a heartwarming tale, that’s all it needed to be, so while it’s not as memorable that didn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable.

Honestly I wish that Pixar's first Queer film would have protagonist at a similar age than the ones here. It can be so important for Queer kids to know that being themselves is okay, and that their feelings are not something to be ashamed of. Also feeling really strongly about your best friend or wanting to befriend someone really bad, only to then later on realize that you might have romantic feelings for that person can be very confusing and uncertain, and it's just important to have a story that reflects your feelings

To me there’s no problem with “shipping” them or thinking of the story as a gay allegory as long as they’re not weird about it, keep it pg, and don’t get angry because it wasn’t explicitly gay. Anybody should be able to relate to this movie and project onto it. I myself was brought to tears when I first watched it, as it captured a lot of my emotions around feeling different and isolated. I connected the message with the LGBT community, as well as autism/just being “weird” and having to mask who you are to be accepted. My dad connected the movie to the discrimination and judgment he faced growing up Asian in an all-white community, with people immediately judging him by how he looked and not as a person. Everyone will connect in different ways, and that’s fine. Good even! As long as we don’t get angry at others seeing the movie differently/the movie not being explicit about the message we give it. Everyone needs to calm down, enjoy the movie, and respect that people will project on a story about a sea monster (minority/othered person) facing the world with help from someone they have a close bond with. The story will hit close to home for many, and that’s beautiful. Everyone chill. :/

Really nice review. Good job! My one thought though - I never got a feeling that the plot was about the vespa itself. Not at all. To me, the vespa always represented the means for Luca to chase his dream and desire to get far, far away alongside his first friend. The vespa wouldn't be the goal itself, but rather a charming way of chasing his previously established dream of exploring the world he is so fascinated with. The vespa itself disappears almost as soon as it came, sold off-screen near the end. There is no real moment of grief over its loss, because it served its means - the money Alberto got for selling it gives Luca a chance to reach his dream to go explore the world and learn about it. Not in the company of his friend Alberto, who he saw as a part of his dream in the beginning, nevertheless with his blessing and by the side of another friend he's made during this journey, Giulia. (Also, sorry for my messy English, but I hope I've managed to convey my thoughts :P Cheers!)

I remember being half and half when it was revealed the film wasn't as gay coded as the trailers made it out to be. On the one hand, I'm not fond of Disney's wimpy attempts at representation and wish they'd just go for it and actually give us an LGBT+ character who isn't a throwaway (I think Owl House is the closest they've gotten and that had to be fought for so hard), but I also think really close platonic friendships should be normalised in western media as well, because those aren't super common either. I think because films (and also arguably, our culture) have always pushed that any kind of affection must equal romance (especially egregious in films where the two leads hook up because they had 2 seconds of eye contact one time) it was kind of refreshing to have a group of friends who deeply care for each other and will do anything to make the other happy. Even as somebody wanting that LGBT+ representation, I was honestly cool with it going either way and being read either way because the bond was just so great. Basically more varieties of relationships as a whole are needed and the sooner we get more of everything the better.

People don’t see the close friendships in western media because they take it for granted. There have literally always been close friendships, whether they are same sex or opposite sex, in western film. In the Cars movies: Lightning McQueen and Mater, Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez. In the Toy Story movies: Buzz Lightyear and Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie, Woody and Jessie, Hamm and Mr. Potato Head, literally every character in Toy Story but Mr and Mrs. Potato Head, Woody and Bo Peep. Lion King: Timon and Pumbaa, Timon and Simba, Pumbaa and Simba, Timon and Nala, Pumbaa and Nala. Aladdin: Genie and Aladdin, Genie and Jasmine. I just named a dozen same sex and opposite sex friendships with EASE. All of them off the top of my head. Western media will never stop making friendships, whether opposite sex or same sex, so don’t get your panties twisted if they start making queer characters with same sex love interests. If you paid attention to the friendships you have always gotten in film, you would stop looking like a fool. I’m not talking to anyone specifically in this comment, I’m talking to EVERYONE who gets all bitchy about “blah blah blah there’s no more friendships in movies anymore 😢😢😢”

@AllyGatorAnimator 2 жыл бұрын
@@elliefuller3667 It's not just ride or die friendships existing though (I don't think any body's saying friendships don't exist at all, but my bad if that's what it sounded like), it's how they are often interpreted and coded, which effects how they're portrayed. There is a stigma that those kind of relationships (especially those that have a lot of physical contact or deep emotional moments) are often associated as being somewhat romantic, and that's something that comes down to culture and public opinion, which in turn translates into how it's portrayed in media. E.g two single guys share a look? They must be gay, two girls dance together, lesbians. One character comforts another during a low point? They MUST be into them! This even happens irl too and is the whole reason "no homo" is even a saying, because people are convinced being nice to somebody of the same sex will make them look gay. It's not as common as it used to be, but it's still there. Also an interesting point about a lot of those; many of those characters have at least one person in the pair be canonically in a relationship (or heavily coded as such, like with McQueen and Sally), so people would go "oh yeah, they must be friends because so and so is already with somebody"... or they ARE romantic (I may be missing something here but I'm pretty sure Jessie and Buzz and Woody and Bo are frequently perceived as being romantic) and one of those who doesn't (Timon and Pumbaa) are often perceived as being gay because it's two men living together raising a kid. That doesn't mean they are or aren't (much like with Luca, I'd be cool with either romance or found family, as both work), but it's an example of people assuming closeness=romance. This can go the other way though with people outright denying canon relationships because they're not explicit enough (I saw people denying Amity from The Owl House was into Luz until the most recent episode) so I think the main takeaway is public opinion ruins every kind of relationship across the board and that's why we can't have nice things.

@@AllyGatorAnimator I just think people take the friendships in movies for granted because we are starting to get a TINY, TINY sliver of representation for same sex relationships. If you disagree, I’m gonna assume you take them for granted as well. See, people that have an issue with same sex relationships in cinema often use the excuse, “we never see two guys/two girls just being friends! Why are you guys taking over?” The reason it looks like we are “taking over” is because the world is so goddamn heteronormative that when these people see anything non-hetero, they think it’s taking over. That’s the kind of person that really pisses me off.

@@elliefuller3667 Oh don't worry, I'm with you on how insufferable it is hearing people panic about the "gay agenda" whenever they see anything LGBT+. As somebody who wants that representation for myself and others, it's frustrating (to say the least, I'm keeping it PG here) and is part of the reason why so many LGBT relationships in media (especially children's media) is so vague or has to be fought for tooth and nail. It shouldn't be that way. It's those same people though (the ones who complain) that are so insecure that they then make platonic relationships be ruined by immediately being perceived as romantic too. You know the ones; the people who think two guys hugging warrants a bunch of gay jokes, or somebody who doesn't want friends of the opposite sex because they think they'll hit on them. The sad fact is, those attitudes then translate into the media by keeping LGBT characters in the background or having straight relationships be very blatant to stop those people freaking out about what a cartoon character gets up to. Literally all affection gets ruined because people are scared of it and what it might mean. It's pretty sad. (I'm not talking about shipping btw, fans can rock on with that). It's why we have to show platonic AND romantic relationships (oh and found family too, because I feel that's a whole other category), in a positive and equally clear light to avoid people carrying these attitudes forward. Modern shows are definitely doing that a lot more (by that I mean bringing it into the foreground more regularly) and I'm all here for it. Give me my lesbian dates, give me my two bros living ride or die for each other, give me my bisexual gal with her huge family of adopted siblings. Rock on with it all. TL;DR hell yeah that's terrible, so we should show more of everything so that attitude swiftly dies.

I kinda see it as Pixar attempt as a Studio Ghibli films? Not a carbon copy but it had some vive to it especially when the town is called "Portarosso"! The location, dream sequences and the delicious looking pasta remind me of their work! Also bare in mind with the whole initial Vespa plot, the two are clearly not the most intelligent merfolk out there! As for the ending, that also reminded me of Ghibli work in that the reaction is not the realistic route. Example like with the film Poyo, the citizen were having a field day when the town was literally under the sea than to panick at the situation or in Porco Rosso, when the sky pirate kidnap the school kids, the kids were also having fun despite being held as hostage whereby today standard, the kids would be crying their eyes out!

I think it is in many ways, on the one hand the story is very much told through a childs perspective and the idea of getting a Vespa being an ultimate goal is quite a realisitc goal for a child to have, again not all kids or stories have to have some huge life changing goal exactly. And additionally the key to the Vespa is that it is symbolic of Luca and Alberto's friendship and Luca going back to the race to win it is him showing what he's willing to do to keep Alberto as a friend. Anyway, like I said I agree with basically everything else you said, Great Review!

I think the ‘dream’ Vespa being a rusty junk motorbike isn’t a bad thing. As a child you can get so enamoured with the idea of a beautiful object/toy instead of the object itself looks, and looking back on that experience you’re like ‘I went through all that for this piece of junk? Hahaha’ This movie is like looking back into your childhood years and the great, good-intentioned friends you had and being grateful for it, but also nostalgic that it makes you cry about the good times you want to come back to but can’t.
