This is a rare excerpt of a Pavarotti performance in Paris, he sings Che gelida manina from Puccini's La boheme. This is one of the oldest videos depicting Luciano Pavarotti, he's only 30 here. What a handsome young man he was! The singing can't be described, it's that good.
Live 1965 - Paris - I do not know who conducted this.
I'm sorry that the video and audio aren't quite in sync, I got them separately and had to put them together.

I loved Pavarotti's voice when he was old, but hearing this makes him even more incredible. I would pay a fortune to be able to sing just a few seconds like this. The sound coming out of your body must be so thrilling to feel.

He was 30 years old then and looking so slim, fitness and handsome. I wish he would keep up like that and likely are still with us now... He's too busy to take care of his health. Sad, so sad, a legend was gone forever.

Sadly, he passed from pancreatic cancer, the same illness that took Alfredo Kraus who was always thin.

According to rodolfo Celletti's chronology, this is an excerpt from a Concert at Salle Pleyel, which also featured Mirella Freni and Oralia Domínguez. Nello Santi conducted the ORTF Philharmonique Orchestra. Very, very rare video indeed. Thanks!!!!!!

Oh, thank you so much, Mooorhe! He is just beautiful here. Why they didn't think to film more of him in those days? Born too soon - but I'm thankful for what we do have. The "bootleggers" had the foresight to record him back then, but the record companies were completely clueless. I've just listened to one of those CDs this morning and for all eternity, this man will be the Maestro. His voice will NEVER be replicated. The angels are in awe, just as we are.

God bless you for posting this. I think sometimes people who talk about his weight, he lack of acting ability, etc. forget this was a young man (like I was a young woman) who LOVED opera. It was his dream to become an opera singer. You see in his fresh young face here, the desire to please, to sing well, to put some of the nuances of Rodolfo into his face. And then there is the voice! Nothing ever before of since like it! Such a beautiful ring and effortless sound. Perfection! mille grazie!!!!

Perhaps. Earlier I saw first Prey (Barber)and then Mehrigi(La Boheme and Manon) I did not realize at the time Mehrigi was very underappreciated. The Mehrigi Boheme came I think the previous year from Pavarotti.

I'm afraid I don't have the rest of the video, this is taken from a more recent TV broadcast and this is all they showed of it. I believe the La boheme you saw was with Ileana Cotrubas at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1973. I have a recording of one of the performances somewhere, I can post it at some point if you want. Many thought he would 'suck' when they first saw him, perhaps this was due to his size. Thank you for the comment, it's great to hear from people who heard him so young.

I remember I read in Pavarotti's and Wright's book "My own story" he said, he once had a big, big bent nail in his pocket, and it somehow got in to a very suggestive position in there, so Luciano looked very indecent on the stage. Someone told him to take the nail out of his pocket, so he doesn't look so awkward. That could be very funny, seeing him on the stage with a huge bent nail looking like something else in his trousers.

Bravissimo! Thank you for posting this, its very unusual. I know he must be 30 here, but he looks about 18, and very nervous, poor chap.

A lot of singers help their nerves with superstitions. I knew a soprano whose great grandmother (or great great; I forget) had acquired a necklace from Caruso and it's been a tradition in their family to wear it during performance ever since. Personally, I place a brand new penny face-up in my right shoe: of course, these things are placebos, so it just raises one's confidence, but it works.

@madisonelectronic sorry because of my english, but your coment it was so touching since I adore Maestro Pavarotti so much. You where lucky, very much, and lucky too me that I can read some nice coment about this great singer. Thank you and I hope that you will read this with pleasure. Such a nice coment yours. P.S. I have that LP too and I was born in 1979.

As Luciano always said 'if you say you are not nervous, you are a liar'. He does tremendously well at not letting his nerves show though, only thing I could possibly fault him on is the little struggle he had while trying to place that B flat.

Lucky me I heard the whole thing in 1972. Please for Gods' sake post the rest. I sat in Lyric Opera in Chicago as I have said before in the really early 70's thinking this new tenor was going to suck. Ha Ha WRONG. I was 18. Now that I can afford it I would pay thousands to hear them again. If I remember it was mostly the same cast as the LP. (very old) Freni, Ghuriarov(sic), just about if I remember the same cast as in the CD.

Very nice, thanks, I wish there were more videos of him this young. Did you see the recent biography of him on public television? Wonderfully done. It was called "A life in seven arias" and had some nice videos of young Pav, even singing with his father (who incidentally had quite a fine voice himself!)

Yes I heard that story, hilarious :D You confused me though because I thought you were still talking aboit Pav. I was thinking for a second "did he do the same thing?" lol :D Here's a funny one, not to get off-topic but the idea is similar: Mario Lanza apparently disliked his female lead in his 4th film "Because you're mine" (a dreadful movie he tried to get out of) so before a big love scene at the end he ate a raw garlic clove! lol =D

At the time Pavarotti ‘s voice is way more “standard”(or “textbook”), right inbetween “open” and “close”. It’s normal for an excellent opera singer is more open with their voice as they grew older and got better control with the vocal method..

The best part was when the lady interviewer said "do you think your huggable extra inches contribute to your resonance?" And he said, "I think so!" =D

I heard this story a while ago but apparently what she asked him, in English, [trying to be tactful about his weight], was 'Do you think it is your extra inches that make you so popular with women?' which he momentarily misunderstood.
