"COMPOSTING" AT HOME (notice the parenthesis because I'm not actually creating compost): HOW TO START A COMPOST PILE AND COLLECT YOUR FOOD SCRAPS AT HOME FOR COMMERCIAL COMPOSTING. Looking for a good wireless computer mouse? Here's my MX Anywhere 3 mouse from Logitech: logi.link/logimx3
Learn how to get started with composting right in your own kitchen, and also learn what you can and can’t compost!
*LITERLESS: WHERE TO COMPOST IN THE UNITED STATES: www.litterless.com/wheretocom...
I live in a Manhattan apartment, and it truly doesn’t matter how large your space is - anyone can collect their food scraps and help create compost. If you live in NYC and want to find a food scrap drop-off site near you, check this out: www.grownyc.org/compost
I’ve done a ton of research on some of the best ways to get started as a beginner, and I am excited to show you my progress on this new environmentally friendly habit. I am going to show you how simple it is to start a composting “bin” of your own no matter the size of your place! No large backyard needed!
As you’ve seen on my channel, I’ve been working on implementing small changes to help move towards a more sustainable lifestyle and this has been a great way to keep up with that. And the best part, ANYONE who’s interested in sustainable living or low-waste living can do this, too!
So here’s the deal. Whenever you throw away organic materials, it goes off into a landfill. The decomposition process within the landfill leads to methane emissions in the air - methane is a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change…no thank you! You can help cut down the amount of waste in these landfills by composting your organic material.
There are various ways to compost...the two I’ve learned most about are backyard composting or commercial composting. Backyard composting keeps everything right in your backyard where you can actually oversee the entire composting process and then use your compost for personal reasons like gardening! Through commercial composting, you’re collecting your food scraps and materials at home, and then dropping them off at a third party site that will bring them to a commercial composting facility! Since I live in New York City space is a little limited, commercial composting is the route for me. (I hope to start a backyard composting bin in my future!)

I love how this channel is a journey to make life happier and more ethical one step at a time. I recently started a compost outside in my family backyard and now everybody in the family has joined in and it's one awesome project! Excellent video as always Lucie and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that you can convince your dad to do your voiceover for a storytime soon! :)

@@luciebfink Thank you Lucie! Our pile is actually an enclosed area of our garden made of wood and lined with a thick biodegradable garbage bag. It has been composting since the early summer and we are hoping it will get to the point where we can add it to the garden soil as we add some plants to it before the winter. That's awesome to hear you are working with your dad! I am sure it will be as awesome as the one you did with Michael and that it will be coming soon! 💕🤞

I’m using my vegetable food scraps to make into a vegetable stock with my instant pot. Before composting you should consider doing that, Lucie. You can even use skins of things like onion and garlic. It will just give the broth a darker color. I use vegetable stock in practically everything I cook. You can even use it instead of oil when you sauté veggies.

Thank you for sharing and I just wanted to share that where I live in Canada 🇨🇦 everyone in the city composts and have a compost bin in there houses. There is a truck that comes to get our compost every week and here you can actually get fined if you put food waste in the normal trash. Just wanted to share! Thanks Lucie great video ❤️❤️❤️

We get fined if we don’t compost here in San Francisco also. As a result there are now flies in the basement near the compost bin and all over my building, even though I have an airtight composting bin. It’s so disgusting I can’t stand it. They come and get it three times a week, but because everyone in my building is using those compostable green bags, they break down and the flies grow inside the big bin. Which is not airtight. Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of all of the flies that have developed around the bin one floor down (I’m on the first floor of my building) and coming into my apartment through the vents and air spaces? It’s so gross. They’re everywhere

We live on property and we compost by keeping a small lidded bucket under the sink. We empty it as needed or when it gets too odoriferous. We have The worms came on their own. We use the dirt and till it into plant holes. Works wonderfully.

In Italy we have a specific bin for organic waste among other regular recycling bins... does it exist in the US? Moreover, my parents have a big garden and actually do backyard composting and use the soil for their plants... :)

I discovered that if you are going to compost in a yard, then make sure you BURY the food scraps instead of just throwing them there, because otherwise you will have lots of unwanted insects biting you every time you go near the pile....

Curious if you know- the drop off site in my city lists meat, fish, bones, dairy as “acceptable”. Does each place vary, and is this normal? All my research, and your video, indicates meat, dairy, fish etc should not be composted, so I’m a little confused.
@luciebfink
@luciebfink 3 жыл бұрын
It's a little tricky, but it depends on where you drop it off - I think it's because animal bones DO decompose but they take a longer time to decompose... so maybe some sites accept them but others only want rapidly decomposing material??
