Reviewing 25.4mm cubes made of pure osmium metal
Osmium, the rarest of the PGM (platinum group metals). So little osmium is mined each year (as a by-product of platinum mining) if even a small number of people on the planet wanted 1 gram, the supply would run out. Less than 100 Kg is mined each year. This amount could fit in a shoebox. All the osmium on the planet would easily fit on a standard dinner room table (of course the table would break due to the weight).
Since osmium production is a by-product of platinum mining and no new platinum mines have been found for decades, the world will never have more osmium. Sure, maybe one day we will have the technology to mine asteroids, but until that day comes osmium is the rarest of the platinum group metals (some argue it is iridium, but osmium is rarer).
These cubes were commissioned for a single custom, who wanted to invest in osmium. Smart customer, as if you watched what happened to iridium from February 2021 to April 2021 it was the best investment on the planet ($1800 an ounce to $6400 an ounce). Who says osmium won't be next?
Please press the like button if you enjoyed our video.
If you want to own a mirrored polished 10mm osmium cube, we have these in stock and even though the price is not cheap (much less than the 1" cubes at 10K each), think of it as an investment. If you purchased one of our full element density cube sets even 3 years ago the cost of the full set has more than tripled in value and you get to be one of a hand full of people on the planet that owns anything made out of osmium.

The power out of an osmium flywheel? One word: Yes. But jokes aside, to actually maximize energy storage, one should remember that the rotational energy increases with the square of the speed, and just linearly with the mass. 10 times the mass gives 10 times the energy, while 10 times the speed gives 100 times the energy. There is a reason why the F1 KERS flywheels are made from carbon fiber. So if one actually wants to maximize the energy storage with exotic materials, I'd try carbon nanotubes. Low mass, but can spin at insane RPM without breaking apart. It may be wise to have it spinning in a vacuum, to prevent the flywheel from burning up from air friction.

I can help with with a bit of math. There's a few chemical tests you can do but they produce toxic fumes. Luckly You can still check the density btw, as long as its about 19.4 g/cm^3 or more it has to be osmium because of cost. As the only elements that could be in there are more expensive then osmium which wouldn't make sense to add it as a scam. Plutonium is lighter at 19.84 g/cm^3 but I doubt they would add that as filler. For the cube size as long as its above 325g the only elements that could be used as fillers are plutonium, Neptunium,Platinum, Iridium. All of which at least 5x more expensive than osmium. The weight being 347.6g gives a density of 21.2 g/cm^3 ... that gives very little wiggle room to add anything that isn't osmium of cheap quality since the top 5 elements are more expensive to add, some even radioactive. The cheapest thing to add would be tungsten but to get the density up the only cheapest metal to add would be osmium , since anything heavier is more expensive. It's difficult to fake plus, the microscope test would verify that air is what reduces the weight. That's why I would say density test is still good

And if osmium is reduced by electrolysis from a salt solution, will its density be higher than that of a compressed powder or lower? And how is the maximum density of osmium known, if no one could cast it in molten form into a compact form? And, by the way, you can use the heat removal from the molds, as they do in the production of nickel.
@RasielSuarez
@RasielSuarez 10 ай бұрын
The problem is that osmium, like other precious metals, has the ability to absorb atmospheric gases. When the metal is molten the outgassing creates microscopic pockets along the crystal boundaries. This both weakens the structure and lowers the density. It is possible to lower the amount of gas through repeated melt-thaw cycles in vacuum but not completely eliminate them. This is why the density of osmium is calculated rather than observed directly.
@mr.moskalukapchemistry4521
@mr.moskalukapchemistry4521 9 ай бұрын
The density is measured using X-ray diffraction of the powder which allows you to accurately determine the crystal structure and from that you can determine the density.

@_shadow_1

@@NwoDispatcher Depends on the isotope. The one's used for medical purposes you would want nowhere near you because gamma rays, but one of the longer lived isotopes only emits relatively weak beta radiation, most of which would probably be blocked by the bulk metal itself and a piece of glass or something between you and the cube would stop most of the rest of it. With the proper precautions, the at least the bulk metal this isotope is safe. Now, if it is in dust or powder form on the other hand, you don't want it anywhere near you as the dust can get in your body and do it's thing in there without much interference.

They sell one gram for about 30 to 40 dollars that's the average price. They may have smaller quantities for around that price

Who cares bro it’s osmium. It’s literally osmium. You get to behold the elegancy of of osmium itself and mention the mere lighting and sound of the video? I understand you want to be able to witness it’s glory in person but with the true bewilderment of osmium is something that we can only be glanced upon as it immaculateness is beyond common insight.
