Lucky Gunner Ammo

Күн бұрын

Today, we're going back to basics. We get a lot of ammo-related questions from new shooters and first-time gun owners. We've answered a lot of this basic info in passing in other videos, but we thought it would be helpful to put it all in one place. To keep it streamlined, we left out a lot of details that probably aren't important for most shooters right away. This guide should cover everything you need to know before you buy your first box of practice ammo.

"Gun people will argue endlessly". So true, not just hollow points. Lubrication of guns is a religion.
@kuuryotwo5153

In some cases I think it's a gospel that needs to be spread more. It's really tiresome seeing someone review a gun and somewhere in the review state, "This is right out of the box, I haven't cleaned off the cosmoline or lubricated it..." Ah. So...the only thing you could do to better set this gun up for failure is open up the slide and chuck a hand full of fine sand in there? Aaaand...yep, there's the 'malfunction' right on cue. Seriously, I don't care if it's Wilson Combat super lube 9 thousand or 5W-30 but please for the love of Christ...lube your mechanical devices.

@Vampirongo Sangronzon "I don't like Glocks" is not as subversive as you might think. Any time I review, display, or even mention a Glock, I get a ton of pushback from Glock haters. More than any other type of gun I ever have on the channel. I don't even really like Glocks all that much myself, but if I so much as mention them, people get all "I'm sick of Glock fanboys. I hate you and I hate your beard!"

Everything that is said in this video was known to me. But as someone from across the pond from Germany, I commend this video for the excellent comprehensibility for someone whose first language is not English. If you sometimes have to listen to the mumbling, slurred, unaccented, and much too fast speaking in other American videos about guns, this video is a boon of pronunciation and intelligibility to the ears of someone whose first language is not English. Thanks!

The whole "accidentally loading the wrong ammo and injuring yourself" reminds me of a story from working on a gun range/teaching carry permit courses. A dude had that Taurus revolver that took the .410 shotshells and .45LC he brought to shoot. Where the cylinder is elongated to fit the shotshells, but turns out it was also long enough that he crammed a .454 Casull round into it and managed to fire the gun afterwards. The CCTV footage didn't provide much context other than a massive blast, him wrapping his hand up, and just walking out. Cleaning up on the range after closing for the day it was discovered the gun launched the cylinder out sideways, through the glass of 2 adjacent shooting lanes, narrowly missing another patron's head. The guy didn't bother to check on anybody, didn't inform the staff, nothing. Just wrapped up his hand and walked out. He called about a week later looking to get the cylinder back since the gun was under warranty and he could get it fixed for free if he had all the parts. Needless to say, we told him to forcefully have sex with himself. We had another one of a guy shooting Bubba's Deluxe Hillbilly Handloads™ out of his pistol which was the right caliber but the pressures were far more than his gun was capable of handling. Which was how he sent a few parts of his pistol downrange, as well as some of the bullets from the gun and some of the brass casing as well. When I was cleaning the range I noticed some of the bullets had bits of the brass casing melted onto them, we even had one of the bullets melted sideways (I figure that was the round in the magazine immediately underneath the round that blew up inside the chamber). The moral of the story? Chris isn't lecturing you on safety. The vast majority of gun accidents happen with handguns. It might seem basic and boring, but it's essential for you and the other shooters on the range to learn what Chris is talking about here.

There is a version of that Taurus that is made for .454. I think they call it the Raging Judge. It still chambers .410 & .45 Colt, but it also has the capability of firing .454. That guy probably watched a video of one of those without realizing it wasn't the standard Judge.

This wasn’t really necessary to include in the video, but in case anyone becomes curious about +P ammo, keep in mind that not all guns are rated to safely fire +P ammo. Check your gun’s manual or look it up online to see if it can fire +P ammo before using it.
@sisleymichael
@sisleymichael 2 жыл бұрын
TRUE! I have an older Taurus revolver, model 82 ex-service gun from Brazil. Works very well and accurate. HOWEVER, it is not +P rated. I respect that. These old Taurus guns have had some issues in the past so more pressure is a bad idea with this gun. Feed it what it is supposed to have, yes.

This comment about using +p ammo in guns thay are not rated for +p ammo is especially important for new gun owners. Every new gun comes with an owner's manual and manuals for older, used guns are typically available on the manufacturer's website or some other website that collects and archives manuals for guns that are no longer in production. Read the whole manual for your gun, even if you're an experienced shooter, and make sure you understand everything in the manual. Many times there will be information that is unique to that model that is important for the safe and proper operation and maintenance of that firearm. 🤔

I am a complete newbie to guns. I never grew up around guns. I bought my first gun ever less than a week ago (Glock 17) at the age of 29. My ammo came in a few days later. I barely learned how to take my gun apart yesterday and it took a while to get it somewhat consistent. Now I’m learning why my ammo looks how it does and soon going to the range to get my first rounds shot out of my gun. Excited and really liking all the information. I had been debating buying a gun for over a year, but when my alarm went off in the middle of the night the other day and I didn’t have anything I could do beside wait for police I felt extremely helpless. Luckily it was just my cat knocking stuff over, but what if it had been an intruder? As a martial artist this was such a weird feeling that I definitely did not like. Went the next day to the gun store and bought a gun that same day. Thank you so much for these informational videos!

Thank you for providing this level of education to your new viewers. I grew up in a "southern" family. My father and seven of my uncles served in the military, and several ended up in law enforcement. I have always been very comfortable around firearms, and have had gun safety lessons from an early age. As surprising as it is to me, there are a majority of Americans who *haven't* been exposed to firearms. (How can this be?) I think this type of education is much needed. Thank you again.

Always watch to see if there is something I don't know. I would say that if you do a revision of this, you may want to add that some manufacturers and older weapons are not designed for the pressures that +P will put on them. One of those things that people really should check before, and when they don't, it can lead to that weapon failing an injuring the shooter.

Also watch out for plated ammo. Plated ammo will work fine for most firearms, but if you have a plated barrel/compensator, it can shear off the round and eject into the shooter or those nearby. They CAN be called as PMJ (Plated Metal Jacket) but most companies will not tell you it is plated, just tell you it's a FMJ and hide a warning you won't see when buying it on the internet such as on the back of the box. Blazer, for example actually hides it UNDER the warnings, on the back of the box, and under the warnings not as one of the warnings. There is also a TML, which is Total Metal Jacket, which completely encases the bullet in copper as opposed to FMJ which leaves the base of the bullet open TMJ generally performs the same as FMJ.

For practice ammo, the most important factor from training aspect is that its point of impact and recoil level is close enough to your selected self-defense ammunition. For me personally, my primary defense ammunition is 40S&W in 180gr range that generates about 1050fps at muzzle velocity. I used to have 165gr weight with around 1150fps muzzle velocity as primary, but I had to change it because I opted for lower recoilong ammunition, and 9mm was not practical for me for my particular situation.

Another consideration I didn't hear mentioned about ammunition selection is to check with your preferred range to see if there are any limitations on what they'll allow you to shoot there (with regard to steel case, reloads, certain brands, etc.)

Case in point, my range doesn't allow hollow-point ammo.

@@earlmorton1216 What's their reasoning for the restriction?

@@JaronActual, I don't know. It's an indoor range; perhaps they're concerned about fragments breaking off and ricocheting off the walls and injuring someone, but that's just a guess.

Went to new range this week with 1000rds I just bought. They said only brass. My ammo was aluminum range crap. They sell the cases and didn't wanna sort through it. If the range wasn't cheap, empty, and no time limit I would've passed but it really is best range around here I've found.

@@rob6850, I have tested my carry ammo. I live in Idaho, 30 minutes away from 1000's of acres of public land where you can shoot pretty much anything you want. (I don't think they allow tracers or anything else that could start a brush fire.) However, I decided to double-check my range's website, and they say, "We do not allow the use of black powder, steel-core, armor-piercing, incendiary, tracers or any type of 'Non-conventional' ammo." So I remembered incorrectly, hollow-points apparently are allowed. Sorry for the confusion!
