400 Pontiac Trans Am Top Reassembly Continues!

We're back at it with our customers 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible, under the hood with the Pontiac 400 that's had the top end refreshed. With the heads bolted back on the 400 Pontiac and our "new" timing cover in hand it's time to get the new PRW water pump installed, and buttoned up, make sure everything is ready for fire up and break in of our new Comp Cams Camshaft.
As always, there's a snag that will slow down the project and this one is totally unexpected... well like most snags if we're honest. Good news is we have a brand new OER Radiator to keep this Pontiac 400 V8 cool, bad news is... well you need to watch the video to find out!

A lot of people may find videos like this boring but I really enjoy them. The second car I owned in 1960 when I was 18 was a beautiful '55 Pontiac 2 door hard top with the 287" engine that I found on a used car lot. I didn't anything about cars then but in 1955 the Pontiac and Chevy V8's weren't equipped with oil filters. My uncle was a heavy equipment mechanic that also rebuilt any kind of engine so I asked him to check it out. The lifters were all clattering because it only had 15 lbs. of oil pressure. He said the motor needed a complete overhaul and an oil filter so i bought a set of 1/8" over pistons and a Howard solid lifter cam and took it all to the local machine shop for a complete rebuild and a valve job. For what I spent on this engine I could have bought a low mileage Pontiac engine and transmission from one of the local junk yards. The 1958 engines were 370" and the 1959-1960 engines were 389". The 287" through the 455" Pontiac engines all used the same basic block.

Im right there with you Rich, ive owned a shop manual for everything i have ever turned a wrench on. Takes out the guess work. Great job as always!

Bolts into aluminum. Why don’t you put antiseize on them, or some non hardening high temp thread sealant? Something to keep electrolysis from occurring?

The trans Am is twice as hard to work on as a Camaro I have a 80 turbo trans you have to remove the turbo and carburetor set up to get a valve cover off.

Isn't the Vac advance suppose to be facing the Passenger side?

On Pontiac it’s drivers side but ai run mine in the passenger side for several reasons.
