@T C Yes, it is very visible and frightening to people who know what that means. I was shocked when the Karl Marx monument was celebrated in a church in Germany. Most interestingly, Merkel was there, who lived under the occupation of the Soviet regime. From the point of view of the clergy, it looks like "Liberation Theology", which the current holy father probably belongs to. For me, who experienced it in the final stages, the stupidity of the Western elite is appalling.

Maxim Matusevich for real, I don’t have time to argue, I’m too busy working through these confusing feelings of pride nevertheless, as an American but with Polish, Slovak, and Ukrainian heritage, who thinks both the east and west had good points but ultimately neither was right and something better than both capitalism and communism is needed. Let’s just all agree, everyone would have done a real good killing each other, and it’s better that we didn’t get to find out who would’ve been the very best at it.

People say a lot of bad things about former socialist system in Poland. And while it rightfully deserves some criticism (total leadership failure in the 80s, homophobia, weird pandering to anti-Semites, an attempt to write status of Soviet Union's puppet state to constitution... While Soviet Union did not asked for that), people often overlook the good things socialism brought to Poland. Before start of II world war, Poland was economically unequal place. While in cities standard of living was generally OK, on the countryside, there was basically a form of feudalism at play (while Polish state was a free market economy). Education system was a mess, almost 33% of population was illiterate. Military, while sure as hell well-trained and sizeable, did not stood a chance against German and Soviet war machines in '39 with its lack of equipment, and officer corps, that fled the battlefield to Romania, and left their men at the mercy of enemy. After the war, thanks to public education programme employed by socialists, illiteracy rate dropped to less than 1%. Industry was rebuilt, and after just six years, polish GDP was bigger than in pre-war years. Hospitals, schools, affordable housing, roads, public transport - all of those things made for capable workforce, from which modern Poland still profits. And polish military became a force to be reckoned with, with good equipment, and traditionally good training (although it is important to note, sometimes it took part in morally questionable actions, like invasion of Czechoslovakia). Sadly, socialists failed to met growing demands of population. While industry had succeeded in providing basic commodities (stories of "empty shelves" are most of the time - western propaganda), there were shortages, or outright absence of consumer goods (turns out, people want more from life than tractors and food). There was also an opposition to growing police state, suppression of free speech and travel restrictions, not only from right wing, but also from other socialists, to which government had answer of lies, tear gas and more police brutality. That was, in the end, nail to the coffin to eastern Europe socialism in late 80s/early 90s. In Poland, neo-liberal shook therapy was employed in 1990, which resulted in millions of people loosing their jobs, poverty to skyrocket, and planted seeds for today's housing crisis. And everyone, who understands a bit of history, already knows what that means - rise of nationalism and far - right extremism. Already in 1993 catholic church used that growing reactionary force to push one of strictest anti-abortion laws in Europe, that in 2020 became the most strict anti-abortion law in Europe (basically, women are forced to born babies, that will die minutes later from birth defects). There is a law, that protects "religious feelings" whatever the fuck it is supposed to mean (there are people charged for that "crime", because they made parody of religious symbols). Polish healthcare was partially privatised, which means, polish doctors and nurses are underpaid, and many of them left the country west, which only worsened current COVID crisis. Polish far-right government (ruling party is a good friend of Hungarian Fideszu) still fails to give money where it is so desperately needed, while spends billions on state propaganda in public TV. Oh, and don't even get me started on state of LGBTQ+ rights here. We also joined NATO, which made us illegal invade Iraq alongside US in 2003, and commit war crimes there. Other than that, polish military is basically disarmed. Old soviet equipment is held by a duct-tape at this point, national programme of building polish main battle tank became black hole for money, joke and a meme, and there seems to be scandal in intelligence almost daily. Good thing, Belarus doesn't want to invade us as badly, as some make it seem, we might even not stand a chance against them. With Russia? Forget it... To sum it up - polish socialism needed reforms. But in our case, the cure was as bad as sickness.
