I stopped making handwritten scores in 2002, as it seemed like a waste of time, compared to using computerized music video notation programs. However, I have never stopped making handwritten sketches, and probably never will.

If there is one instrument notated with the melody and a messy scribble across the rest of the manuscript = that equals a repetition. The melodic line is there just so it makes clear what s being repeated, saves ink.

In the middle. The convention in those days was to put vn. 1 & 2 and violas at the top of the score, vc and db on the bottom, and sandwich winds and brass in between.

I would like to travel back in time, and give him some lead pencils with good erasers! All those angry-looking scratchings out...look at Mozart scores, and they look really neat, but Mozart actually did make sketches which his wife destroyed after his death...the scores we see are fair copies. My theory is that Beethoven spent too much money on wine, and had to conserve music paper...well, a joke, perhaps...

no man ofc he has good paper and pencil is all about how hard compose a piece that what he actually wanted. lots of effort lots of repeat and repeat with stressful
