20:56 is a really clever little detail that will probably only be picked up on the second watch through. Watch Twilight's face when Starlight says "9 magical items". She does this great little eye movement that suggests that she's counting in her head.

Also, I *love* Pinkie's characterization in this episode. Her going all Metal Gear Solid in the beginning, and her constant looks of suspicion in the first half, are fucking hilarious. And considering Pinkie is all about smiles and making people happy, it's perfectly in character for her to be suspicious of how unsettling-ly cheerful everyone is.

Narrator007 Oh, I guess that too, but I was talking about mostly the animation, like the instance where Twilight looked confused when Starlight said that Mage had 9 magical items. Also, when Sugar Belle and the others were talking to them, the Mane 6 were in the light, and they were in the dark, some symbolism there. And when the Mane 6 were trapped, I really liked how as the propaganda was drowning out everything and they were getting more and more depressed, the equals sign from the windows slowly got bigger and bigger and then completely faded to darkness. Some cool ass shit right there.

***** Cults, the risk of communism when abused (as it has been in almost every attempt to be executed in history xP) and brainwashing (dealt with that just a little bit with Chrysalis and Shining Armor, but it wasn't openly addressed back then like it was in this episode). Indeed, Ms. Mew, this episode got so dark, so quick lol
@MewDenise9 жыл бұрын
Chrysalis trying to start a cult? Not at all. Communism is a totally different thing. A cult is a religious or social group with socially deviant or novel beliefs and practices. The brainwashing isn't magic, it's a really charismatic leader. This episode reminds me of Warren Jeffs and the FLDS cult. Communism has gotten such a bad reputation because of some messed up leaders in history.

I must say the most interesting thing about the season 5 premier would be Starlight Glimmer. She is legitimately a real nemesis for Twilight, not only personality wise but also in terms of magical ability. If I'm not mistaken she's also the only non-alicorn in the series that we've seen (other than Twilight) to use offensive magic blasts (destroying the stone bridge in one shot was pretty impressive). She mentioned that she can actually learn spells, which is a rare unicorn talent that only ponies like Twilight and Sunset appear to have. Let's not forget that she has the inherent magical ability to remove cutie marks from ponies and render them powerless. Considering that it worked on Twilight, who is an alicorn, it could technically be used on Celestia, Luna, or Cadance. On a side note Double Diamond is Carrot Cake, Party Favor is Flim, and Sugar Belle and Night Glider are both Sunset Shimmer. Oh and Starlight Glimmer is Barbie. :)

I'm actually really glad that DHX made the trailers to deliberately mix-and-match the jokes and punchlines; that way, the trailer tells one joke, and then the actual joke from the show doesn't decay after you've seen the trailer a bazillion times. Take the scene from around 4:40, for instance. In the trailer, Spike was snoring loudly in response to Fluttershy's proposal to stay in Ponyville. In the actual show, he's awake, and excited to have Fluttershy around to spend the weekend with him and Big MacIntosh talking sports and stuff. If the trailer had shown _that_, the punchline would have lost its punch by now, and the joke would fall flat.

Man, going back to rewatch this after finishing season 6 makes me feel bad for Starlight. There really wasn't enough here to paint her as anything but a pure, manipulative villain, and that's just what the plot needed. And I guess even what the mane six needed for them to act the way they had to, to set things in motion. But everything she does and the rationale she comes up with adds up with what we now know of her past, and the insecurities she's been carrying with her all along. She really is the same pony, she just stumbled upon the wrongest solution to a very real problem and things got out of hand. I never would have guessed we'd end up with such a nuanced character after this!

Luffyiscool 38:28 You asked for her motivation? I have a perfect head canon. She is a relative of Aria Blaze, the purple siren. That explains the same color scheme. Aria was not born a siren, but transformed into one as it was offered to her that she could be "special". As Starlight learned about this, she promised herself that such misery caused by her relative would never happen again. So what better way to prevent somepony from wanting to be special than brainwashing them into believing that being special is the cause for misery and the only way to be happy is to be equal.

The reason why it was hard to convince the villagers to not follow Starlight was because they had been following her for a long time. They don't want to believe they have given up everything for nothing. When Starlight was exposed, they quit following her because they saw her hypocrisy. She preached to them about giving up their talents, yet she never gave up her own.

This has been bugging me for days: How can I see Starlight Glimmer as a tragic villain? I can understand her hiding her cutie mark and having a break down when her plans fall apart, but up until that point there's nothing hinting at her being a misguided individual. She constantly patronises everyone she talks to, almost like she's talking to her pets. She does terrible things without showing any empathy and wears a smug grin while she does it. If these are subtle hints at a dark troubled past and a delusion of righteousness I fail to see it.

Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a map of the United States, and there's a little town there called Peaksville. On a given morning not too long ago, the rest of the world disappeared and Peaksville was left all alone. Its inhabitants were never sure whether the world was destroyed and only Peaksville left untouched or whether the village had somehow been taken away. They were, on the other hand, sure of one thing: the cause. A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines - because they displeased him - and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages - just by using his mind. Now I'd like to introduce you to some of the people in Peaksville, Ohio. This is Mr. Fremont. It's in his farmhouse that the monster resides. This is Mrs. Fremont. And this is Aunt Amy, who probably had more control over the monster in the beginning than almost anyone. But one day she forgot. She began to sing aloud. Now, the monster doesn't like singing, so his mind snapped at her, turned her into the smiling, vacant thing you're looking at now. She sings no more. And you'll note that the people in Peaksville, Ohio, have to smile. They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things because once displeased, the monster can wish them into a cornfield or change them into a grotesque, walking horror. This particular monster can read minds, you see. He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion. Oh yes, I did forget something, didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the monster. This is the monster. His name is Anthony Fremont. He's six years old, with a cute little-boy face and blue, guileless eyes. But when those eyes look at you, you'd better start thinking happy thoughts, because the mind behind them is absolutely in charge. This is the Twilight Zone.

Sorry for the long comment on top of an already long comment section, but I assure you that I did my best to pare it down and remove things that were duplicated elsewhere. To me, the biggest surprise of this premiere was the role given to Fluttershy. This was the first time in any premiere or finale that someone other than Twilight Sparkle played the most important role. 1. 1:16 "I claim this chair in the name of Mars!" Or in Rainbow Dash's case, in the name of Mercury. ;) 2. 1:58 "It wants you to be real politicians." Twilight already learned how to tell other people how to do their jobs last Winter Wrap Up. :) 3. 2:17 "That's a Dora the Explorer reference." Sorry, I'm too sane to ever voluntarily watch that. 4. I'm amazed at how fast you can make these PMV-style alternate intros. 5. 4:53 Giving Spike a foam claw instead of a foam finger was a nice touch. 6. 5:28 Didn't they film an Indiana Jones movie here? 7. 7:20 "They're talking like Jeehovah's witnesses!" I've seen a god-like creature composed of several different animals. I've seen a changeling queen with holes all over her body. I've seen a giant worm with mouth tentacles. None of that was nearly as creepy as *this.* 8. 9:17 "You're smart! (That means you're the villain!)" So, is Sonata the exception that proves the rule? 9. 10:32 You may have liked this song, but I was cringing the whole way through. The underlying message just made that song creepy as hell for me. I would rather listen to Spike's rendition of the Cloudsdale anthem and human Twilight's rehearsal song back to back five times over. 10. 16:02 Sitting like that, Twilight looks like a kangaroo with wings. 11. 17:45 AJ: "You've got a stronger stomach than any of us." Is this the first time they've referenced a comical ability and used it for something plot-related? 12. 19:15 "I'm sure this is some kind of political metaphor for something." A lot of people thought it was communism, but I believe that is incorrect. Marxist socialism/communism is concerned with equality of outcomes, not equality of roles or recognition. Some others thought it was egalitarianism, but that's more about being treated as equals under the law or treating each other as equals. It has nothing to do with squashing individual identity. I am especially interested to see what our Norwegian friend LaDix thought because there is a Scandinavian idea called Janteloven, or Law of Jante, that is very similar to the philosophy Starlight was attempting to spread. As I understand it, Janteloven discourages the seeking of individual praise or fame in the belief that it leads to jealousy and discrimination, causing social disharmony. 13. 19:53 "I can't believe they successfully tricked me!" You didn't really think you were smarter than these writers, did you? 14. 21:55 "It's pretty convenient that her talent *is* magic, rendering her useless once it's taken away." On the bright side though, Twilight was still able to brainstorm and come up with a scheme because her special talent had nothing to do with her smarts, or at least not directly. 15. 23:54 "So, propaganda as well." If you listen carefully to the messages coming out of that speaker, many of them sound a lot like the kind of doublespeak found in Orwell's 1984. 16. 30:32 Pinkie: "Laughs don't come in barrels." So without her mark, she's like Maud. Maud: "It doesn't talk. It's a dress." 17. 31:10 Starlight: "Come. All new friends stay with me until their cottage is completed!" Luffy: "We have some... private time." (wink) With all the creepy smiles, strange tones of voice, and unwanted touching of flanks in this episode, there's megatons of fuel for inappropriate stories here. 18. 31:22 "They stay for the endorphins!" The most addictive drug of all. 19. 31:36 "You doing chores?" No, she was trying to find out if Santa visits this place. 20. 35:24 "Wow, it didn't take much for *you* to break!" People who are used to being in control normally aren't able to handle losing control of a situation. 21. 36:30 "That face!" A face only Bulk Biceps' mother could love. 22. 37:16 This scene reminds me of something. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aOCWpNpp0865p3U.html 23. 40:03 "Wow, Pinkie. You got some competition!" You mean potential partner. Let's not have another Pinkie Pride, alright? I was slightly disappointed that you didn't put up a recap and rating for the episode at the end like you had throughout season four. Do you think you might start doing that for later episodes?

Yeah, this was a very solid season premiere! It wasn't another grand-scale two-parter, like with 'The Return of Harmony,' 'The Crystal Empire,' and 'Princess Twilight Sparkle,' but it still told a great story, while picking up where season four left off. I like how the mood started out very low-key creepy, and then got really intense in the second part! I've also gotta agree that I love how the day was saved by the new ponies, and NOT the Mane Six! As for our new antagonist, Starlight Glimmer, she's basically the pony version of Amon, from Legend of Korra. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that as a bad thing, because Amon was a kickass villain! The idea of nerfing and/or de-powering individuals with exceptional talents, while claiming it's for the sake of equality, is definitely a nice villainous motive. However, while Amon was more of a militant revolutionary, Starlight was a straight-up cult leader, even brainwashing her victims until they're converted to her ways. Also, both of them were hypocrites and frauds. I certainly expect to see her again, considering this is the season premiere and she didn't get blasted by a rainbow beam. Oh, and how about her shutting up Twilight, who was in mid-friendship speech? That was CLASSIC!! XD

As for my thoughts on the episode, I thought it was really good. The "perfect, creepy utopia" plotline has always been a personal favorite of mine, and I think they did it really well here. It's usually very disturbing, but mostly in a good way. The comedy was pretty good: Pinkie having to eat all the muffins was really funny, as well as the part with Fluttershy trying to leave Starlight's house to go to the cutie mark vault. It's also a real nice change of pace to have the Mane 6 NOT be the ones to ultimately save the day. (Technically anyway.) The song was... all right, but it did at least have a purpose in terms of the story, so I can't harp on it too much. The moral it taught was a really good one as well. Because, honestly, if friends never had disagreements, their friendships would be incredibly boring. I was also really surprised to see that Scott Sonneborn helped write this episode, though that might explain some of the humor. (Since Trade Ya had some funny moments, and while I hate Somepony to Watch Over Me, the song fakeout in that episode was really funny.) Overall, a great start to the season. I'm liking where this season is going so far. The Mane 6 have basically become the Pony, Friendship equivalent of the Knights of the Round Table, and I find that pretty awesome. I have high hopes for the rest of the episodes here. :)

LUFFY!! GOMU GOMU NO HYPEUUU!!! It's good to have you back! You're one of my favorite reactors by far! I don't mind the castle either. I just think other people get too worked up when a new thing happens to sell toys are introduced and they get worked up about it for no reason. Luffy has brain farts??? Hmm...come to think of it, I left my brain farts back in Season 4. xD Don't tell me your brain is a cutie mark?? SERIOUSLY?? You were approached by Jehovah's Witnesses?? Good lord...it's SCARY. Yeah, I laughed at that Party Favor name too. xD It sounds like such a friendly name for such a common phrase. I don't think Derpy would be glad to have her cutie mark gone for the 2nd time if she moved here. But all for the muffins, I suppose. DAMMIT!! A South Park reference. Now, THAT tricked me. Probably, Starlight's plan would be foiled if she actually erased her cutie mark, which limits her mark. Probably, her big plan was to make EVERYONE equal in Equestria and then, be equal herself as to disrupt the flow of discovering REAL talent. Sounds scary then anything else. "Mare Marx"? Sorry, not a good name. I just prefer ponies with celestial names rather then names that actually represents propaganda. Seems a bit risque. then again, the fandom will name ANY pony. We'll never know for sure if they really delve into the magical items side-arc. I think it's more of the Mane 6 spreading friendship across lands of Equestria. But then again, a nice little collect-a-thon side plot can really make this season complex and sounding interesting while Starlight is a major threat. Is it me or does this premiere have a lot of top -down views?? Seems that the animators are getting a lot better every season and I LOVE it. What can I say about grey pinkie? They say rocks run in the family. Better then Discorded Pinkie. Party Favor must be smiling a lot or who is trying to resist scratching himself because of that cloak he's wearing. "getting punched?" I guess words are more powerful then fists. Party Favor is voiced by Sam Vincent, who also voiced Double D from "ed, edd n eddy". The voice is so similar, though. It's nice to see most reactors prefer other ponies saving the day for the Mane 6. It's surprising. Yet Equestria Daily people are still complaining about this. Actually, Pinkie has 2 competitions. Who knew being a party pony could be such a hard life?? Awwww, you missed the Wilhelm scream. :( Oh, well, it's overused, anyways. "not the Twilight Sparkle Show", also NOT "The Rainbow Dash Show". Funny, I watch other peoples reactions to understand more about the episode too! 2 things I have to remember though. Since you're quite eager, mine is just on my channel! Feel free to check it out! Looking forward to your future reactions, too! :) More about the castle next week although, I'm NOT going to spoil myself so soon. Learned that lesson the hard way.

Zangor warrior First of all, thank you for your nice words :) ------- 1.) "I don't mind the castle either. I just think other people get too worked up when a new thing happens to sell toys are introduced and they get worked up about it for no reason." Yep, personally I think the show's writers do an excellent job of making toy-centric additions work by thinking up good plots and stories to smooth them into place. 2.) "SERIOUSLY?? You were approached by Jehovah's Witnesses?? Good lord...it's SCARY." Indeed. They sent chills down my spine, and after getting the hell out of there I felt like I needed a shower. 3.) "DAMMIT!! A South Park reference. Now, THAT tricked me." I got a lot of enjoyment out of that game, and I've been meaning to catch up with the show at some point. I've seen up to season 13 so far. 4.) "Probably, her big plan was to make EVERYONE equal in Equestria and then, be equal herself as to disrupt the flow of discovering REAL talent. Sounds scary then anything else." I think that was her goal too. Make everyone equal, which leaves HER as the best. It was very apparent when she said she wanted all of Equestria to go there and remove their marks. 5.) "Seems that the animators are getting a lot better every season and I LOVE it." 100% Agreed. 6.) "Yet Equestria Daily people are still complaining about this." Keep in mind, Equestria Daily likes to complain about everything. I'd take any criticisms from them with a grain of salt lol 7.) "Awwww, you missed the Wilhelm scream. :( Oh, well, it's overused, anyways." Actually, I was spoiled about it randomly happening. Thus, it didn't surprise me. I usually don't mention the scream anyways, since just like Derpy, i'm not invested enough to go nuts about it. I prefer to watch the show as a whole rather than get swept up in bandwagon sub-fandoms. If that makes sense. 8.) "Since you're quite eager, mine is just on my channel! Feel free to check it out!" I've got a busy task of watching almost every commentary on this, such is my love for it, so i'm sure i'll be watching yours eventually! And just like always, if I like someone new i come across and they have less than a few hundred subs, I add them to the promotions list on my channel. Hopefully I'll feel the same way about you :)

If you notice at 10:03, Starlight has an angry look on her face. Wonder why that is? Especially since she's shown to be smiling in the next shot. With the way she escaped, she'll most likely be back at some point. I also wonder who she was referring to when she said what she said at 13:55, or am I just thinking too much into it and that she was referring to herself and the town?

Man. Starlight is a really smart villain. She's going to have a major role in this season. I guarantee it.

Pinkie didn't act like Maud at all, may i remind you that Maud has a rock as a pet? This "realistic" Pinkie would never have a rock as a pet because "Rocks are just a mixture of common minerals formed after thousands of years which are uncapable of showing any kind of emotion" (Read that with realistic Pinkie's voice) It's like when people compare Maud to Daria, they both are serious, but totally different in their personalities.
@luffyiscool9 жыл бұрын
Discorded Brony As far as I'm concerned, that line about laughter not coming in barrels was the exact same as "it doesn't talk. it's a dress." The dryness was very Maud-like, which is why I said she acted like Maud. It's true that their personalities are still different, but it's also a stretch to say she didn't act like her "at all". (Because of what I first mentioned)

I have a small theory it's interesting that at first starlight was saying that cutie marks are bad and separate others but when the mane 6 cutie marks or booty marks lol were collected she then says that they could be use for her purposes. Is she collecting cutie marks for someone maybe? I do hope we see her again she was interesting. I'm glad you saw that pinkie was acting like her sister Maud plus their were an few mentions call backs to previous episodes :)
@discordedbrony48309 жыл бұрын
Tsuria Dragon I think that by "purposes" she just meant "hiding them". She couldn't just have said to Double Diamond that there was any reason to fear that FS may betray them, after all she needed everypony to trust her.
@TsuriaDragon9 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's true I think starlight does believe in her goal it's just she need her magical abilities in order to do them. I hope she comes back :)

Everyone was so quick to jump on the communisum bandwagon that no one even considered Jehovah's Witnesses. Good job sit.

Yeah, same! Though I dunno if I'd go with Jehovahs Witnesses, since they're not really known for being an isolated cult. To me something more along the lines of Jim Jones and the Peoples' Temple of Jonestown springs to mind. An isolated libertarian cult with delusions of grandeur, bent on changing all the nation, and led by a charismatic and completely hypocritical leader.

Those of you who watch "Legend of Korra" will know exactly why I think Starlight is such an awesome villain. 2:18 You...really couldn't resist making that joke, could you? 7:51 OH GOD, THEY'VE ALREADY GOTTEN TO VEGETA! THAT'S IT: GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!!! 9:24 The line about "We don't get many alicorns around here" could arguably construed as an in-joke, since an error in the animatic accidentally made one of the villagers an alicorn, which caused a lot of speculation. 11:15 And then Rainbow's mind just...shatters. 14:27 Twilight may be best pony, but Tabitha St. Germain is best VA. 15:50 DERPY HAS FOUND UTOPIA 18:22 Somehow that doesn't quite surprise me. 19:27 I was going to criticize the name "Staff of Sameness" for being dumb, but the plot twist halfway through Part 2- that the staff has no power, and it's all a prop presumably invented at the last second to hide Starlight's magic- actually turned that on its head and turned out to be really clever. 21:13 DAMMIT PINKIE, YOU HAD ONE JOB!!! 24:47 I know there's a Twitter joke in there, but I don't get it. 25:24 I REALLY hope so. 30:38 Something just struck me: this is basically what Pinkie's personality would be like if she still lived on the rock farm and hadn't become a party planner. 38:30 At this point we don't know her motivation. I highly suspect she's going to come back as the villain of the finale, so I guess we'll find out then. 40:08 My official headcanon is that Party Favor is the son of Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich from the future, sent back in time to ensure that this event went exactly the way it was supposed to.
