I loved that you stated Ace died in Luffy's arms. Most people say along the lines of "Luffy couldn't save Ace even though he was there" No shade on that but the emotional difference between that and "Luffy couldn't save Ace as he was dying in his arms" hits so much harder he wasn't just there, he was holding him and was helpless.

Fun facts about the timeskip : Oda made it 2 years because that's how long the StrawHats were separated for in real world time . And Oda took his longest break between the last chapter of pre-TS and post-TS , though even then it was only 1 month/4 weeks .

I've been reading One Piece for over 12 years now. I never caught the Ace/Dadan necklace thing. That's incredible and I'm going to pause and go cry in a corner now.

I would like to note that, in the manga where the sake cup was first seen it is actually possible to spot an extra cup to the side of the other two cups albeit cut off. They didn't do that in the anime probably because the animators/storyboaders didn't notice this detail and Oda didn't tell them about it. But yes, Sabo's inclusion was forshadowed in Marineford.

Luffys number is 56, you can see it in many color spreads And the reason for that is Gomu Gomu fruit, or rather Go = 5, Mu = 6 Cause Japanese numbers Chopper is 110, Hito Hito fruit Hi = 1, To = 10 Robin is 87 cause Hana Hana fruit Ha = 8, Na = 7 Brook is 43 cause Yomi Yomi fruit Yo = 4, Mi = 3 The other strawhats also have numbers associated with them but dont remember the number or why of each

I don't think any other author or mangaka would do what Oda did here. Placing Ace's and Luffy's flashback AFTER he died was a bold move and I think it works brilliantly. We get to mourn him twice in two different ways.

Probably unpopular opinion but I think Chekhov's guns shouldn't be overdone, the basis that every info should have relevance and come back later on as a Chekhov's gun makes the story ironically more predictable in the long run. You need superfluous information since that is what makes stories feel real - not everything you learn in your life has value or matters in the longterm. Using Chekhov's guns and "useless" (but preferably interesting) trivia in combination with each other is what makes Chekov's guns shine more in the long run.

ace's tatoo of his name with an s crossed out is likely a homage to sabo's flag. meaning that sabo has been planed since ace was introduced

4:05 In the scene with Doflamingo and Moria, Doflamingo states that the reason he's trying to kill Moria is that the higher ups have decided that he's too weak to be a Warlord anymore. Probably because he got defeated by the Straw Hats and then didn't really do much during the war. Later in the arc we get direct confirmation that Moria escaped when Doflamingo is talking to some guy who is probably the "higher up" who ordered this, or someone connected to them.

I appreciate your appreciation of Dadan. I love her character and she's always the one I point to when people complain about mothers in One Piece. She's so fucking great and the scene where she gives Garp the business is one of my favorites.

Apparently Oda said in an interview that he wanted to put the ASL flashback before Ace's death but couldn't fit it in due to pacing issues , though I am unsure about the source

You see that a lot in Amazon Lily where he seems to just understand people’s hearts. He’s always been that way. He also very much did that with Nami in Arlong Park.

19:34 Oda uses wordplay with numbers a lot in One Piece. Luffy is often associated with the number 56 because in Japanese 5 = Go and 6 = Mu, and his devil fruit is the Gomu Gomu No Mi. Your theory could still be correct though, just letting you know that it also means Gomu / Rubber.

Note: "uncle" in Japanese carries more meaning than just "the sibling of one of your parents". It's a term you use for someone older than you with which you have a sort of bond, or in the sense of a yakuza family's hierarchical structure, the head of your division or head of a family that sits under a bigger clan. Sentomaru also calls Kizaru "uncle", in Japanese using the term "Ojiki". That said, it could very well just be a gag about Buggy's imagination, after all, Luffy said Ace is his brother (sworn brother, but it's not like he said the whole backstory to his crew either) and the Marines made it known that Ace was Roger's son, and that Luffy is Dragon's son, so it could be a joke about Buggy being confused.

Luffy doesn't count himself as part of his crew . And also the ten crew members was the goal from the start but the anime never touched in it till this moment. And 56 can also be written as gumu or close to it I think which is way he wears 56 a lot check the openings and you'll see it alot .

I think the scene with Luffy wanting 10 crew members happened only in the 1st chapter of the manga with the anime bringing it back for some more padding and I am not sure if it Oda has said something about this

This was honestly a really fun video and I'd been counting down the days till you got to it I only really have two things I wanna talk about The first is what you described as Luffy's overly trusting nature and wanting to be suspicious of it. In my understanding, it's not that Oda is trying to present Luffy as being overly trusting or trusting too easily, but rather that he has a very good inherent read of people and the ability to appeal to them in a way that makes them want to help them. It's the whole thing that Hawkeye talks about during Marineford. Luffy is the sort of person who can turn anyone, even former enemies into his allies and that's what makes him dangerous. The other thing is the 56 thing you brought up half jokingly. This is just a piece of useless trivia but the reason why it's 56 is because in Japanese those numbers are read as Go-Mu like Gomu as in Luffy's devil fruit power. it's basically just a cheeky reference. Though it is interesting food for thought that you mentioned about potentially one of the strawhats dying when there's 11 of them

Me throughout the whole video: 👀 Also, the timeskip brought different feelings from me depending on the medium. While in the manga it was pure agony because of the one month drought, (but much deserved break for Oda-san) it was just pure hype in the anime because I couldn't wait for the Return to Sabaody Arc to be animated. That little arc never failed to hype me up in every rewatch. It's always one of my favorite moment whenever the Strawhats are taken seriously (as people in One Piece should!) and looking good while kicking ass.

About Sabo.. For Luffy he has been dead for like 10 years, its not something people talk about much after such a long time, especially Luffy who throughout the series always lives in the here and now and doesn't care about the (or anyones past) hence he also said he had to go after Ace couse he is his only brother since he allready suffered the pain of losing his other brother in the past. (and of course the crossed out S in Ace's ASCE tattoo is for Sabo and looks like his flag) I don't agree on putting the Backstory befor MF btw, MF was Luffy's arc where he had to suffer a loss with the focus on his progression, if it was the other way around Ace would be a way bigger focal point iso of a goal, it also after gives you the perspective of why Ace stopped to face Akainu after insulting Whitebeard, where, in typical Oda writing style, you first say Why the hell didn't he just let it go, and afterwards it's explained what kind of person Ace is and understand why he couldn't let it go. (I recommend looking back at Arlong Park after you finish Fishman Island) Ps Zoro being the only one not figuring out the 3d2y 'riddle' was funny ;)

It’s good to see new people getting into one piece, experiencing all this cool stuff for the first time. It’s nice to watch videos like this from the privileged vantage point of someone who is completely up to date with the story. It's funny listening to this because I was about this same place when you made the video originally but now watching near end of Egg Head. I don't watch with the same level of detail as you do, so I miss things you, um, really get set off by. But when you nail one, like Law/Doffy similarity, knowing what the future holds, I have to applaud you. Because I didn't notice their standards much bc smiling faces on flags is common in OP. But truly, since Law's found-father is Corazon, Doffy's brother and murder victim, the symbolism was dead on. But not every details is essential. That's how you keep the watcher guessing. Also, for those who are "manga only" Oda does have veto right over anything in the anime that will foul up the story going forward. He obv doesn't write filler or additions, but he'll kill them if they are an issue (wasn't true until post-Alabasta and the extra poniglif, but Oda even worked that one way). So the anime is its own "art form" that should be judged diff from manga. Both are fantastic, but not identical art forms.

SO, between the four DF members of the crew, they cover all the numbers between 1 and 10 EXCEPT 2 AND 9. So people think there will eventually be a straw hat with the 2929 fruit or the 9292 fruit

Ironically even now on chapter 1118 theres still only 10 members... and the two members who were supposed to join didnt at the last second... that being Vivi and Yamato... the only thing is... who would they kill and why... Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Brooke, Franky, and Robin all have roles that being, Navigator, Cook, Doctor, Musician(didnt say importnat role just an actual role), Shipwright, and Archeologist, and then Luffys the captain, and if i remeber correctly jinbe is the Helmsmen (navigator tells him where to steer the helmsmen actually steers, before jinbe it was usually switched out between everyone beside Luffy and Zoro) the only two with no actual job on a pirate ship being Zoro and Ussop, Zoro just labeled as a swordmen or a fighter (which literally everyone on the ship is technically a fighter) and Ussop the sniper, Personally out of those two i think Ussop is the more likely to die, and the sole reasoning of that being that Ussops dream isnt just to become a brave warrior of the sea, its specifically to DIE a brave warrior of the see, granted he is a brave warrior, the word brave doesnt mean to stand with no fear it means to stand up despite of the fear you feel, he just isnt a brave warrior to himself yet, and i think sacrficing himself, like genuinely death sacrifice will, in his eyes, finally make him a brave warrior of the sea, not only opening up the spot for a long ranged attacker, conpleteong his own goal, but also fits neatly into the "If theres more then ten crewmates 1 must die" theory

There isn't much filler here. But what you felt was weird was the dragged out parts. Because in the manga they were a few chapters while the anime stretched it too long. This is where the pacing issues start showing up in the anime. So I once again recommend you One Pace

About the 56 shirt, theres just a massive misunderstanding here. 56 is Luffy's number, it's been a consistent thing throughout the series because 5 reads "go" and 6 reads "mu" in japanese, it's a play on Luffy's fruit.

Luffy said he wanted at least 10 members at the beginning of the manga but it was another detail the anime left out of the beginning (like luffy getting his eye scar from stabbing it himself). Some people think there aren’t going to be over 10 straw hats, but another theory is that 4 joined in east blue, 4 joined in the first half of the grand line, so 4 more are going to join in the new world, meaning 12 crew + luffy in the end. Or Oda has no idea how many crew there will be and he’s just making up this story as he goes /j

Ace’s death was sad I cried but when Luffy went on that rampage calling for Ace, that was heartbreaking. I started balling my eyes out. I love Luffy and every time he cries I cry 😢

Small thing about the number of people Luffy stated in the flashback. Luffy said: "at least 10 of them." The way it's worded, it's strongly implied to mean "recruting" 10 people to the crew. About the time it took since Luffy started His journey, it's maybe closer to 5-6 months, rather then 3. Not sure about that.

Remember One Piece characters are are always more, than just their group. Just because Kuma was a revolutionary, does not necessarily mean, he is acting on orders. I personally have a feeling the answer is closer connected with the book he carries.

Going to correct you on a point. Luffy did not awaken his CoC on Amazon Lilly, he just used it there, unconsciously... The FIRST time Luffy used CoC, which should be the time it awakens in him, is when he is pushing against Duval's bull. It was not very obvious, but that was COC he used to terrify the bull.

There is an interesting insight into Mihawk in him accepting Zoro's plea to train him. Before Marineford he was solitary and merciless, but when he witnessed Luffy and came to understand his power in inspiring and allying with others, he came to understand the value of being with others. Hence why he begins to respect perona a bit more, rather than just telling her to go away constantly. Had zoro asked him to train him before marineford, he would have spurned him and lost any respct for him, but because he now realises that Zoro is abandoning his pride for his Captain, and not out of any weakness, and he has this newfound respect for luffy and the crew because of it. Having opened his eyes to another way of being strong while not having to be isolated

I don’t know if you notice this but around the first five episodes he says he wants to have 10 people
