A Lufthansa Boeing 747-830 (registration D-ABYP) bounced on the runway during a landing attempt at Los Angeles LAX. Flight #LH456 departed Frankfurt at 11:20 CEST this Tuesday, April 23 2024 for a 13-hour flight to Los Angeles.
The aircraft, on final approach to runway 24R, made a hard landing forcing the pilots to go around.
The event was caught on KZfaq by AIRLINE VIDEOS at 1:05pm PDT. The Boeing 747-8 landed safely on the same runway about 15 minutes later.

IMPORTANT:
This video is all about education. It's designed to give aspiring pilots and air traffic controllers a taste of real-world situations through example scenarios and helpful info. But that's not all! Current pilots and controllers can also benefit by listening to real radio communications from around the globe. This helps them stay sharp and think about how they might handle similar situations.
To create these videos, I keep my ear to the ground on major aviation news and events. I check the dates and time zones to see if I can find recordings of the radio conversations. Then, I become a bit of a broken record myself, listening to them repeatedly to create subtitles and identify key moments. Finally, I whip up some animations (or grab them from ADS-B websites) and combine them into a neat package.

People who don’t fly the 747 have no idea how difficult it is to judge altitude and speed. The altitude of the cockpit when the mains touch is higher than the 50 ft call on most airliners. Transitioning to this plane of other aircraft can be extremely challenging. It’s not unusual for this to happen during this time.

No.. ..pilots do a lot of training and had to do these type- ratings..and : yes, they have the skill to land a 747 in the right way ( unbumpy and smooth). The " high- above- cockpit- position " is not an excuse. With the first 747 ( 747-100) the untrained (!) test- pilots made an excellent job: they had to " come - in - hot " too, because of a retracted- flaps-landing...and they did it perfekt and smooth in front of a big crowd of the visitors, customers, engineers, press and so on.. May be wind shear was a factor. But the pilot did not mention something like that.

@@BadToelz23 I'm sorry, but you are orating from the inner spaces of your colon through your sphincter. Here's some trivia to micturate all over your assumption. When the 747 was developed it did not have an automated Radio Altimeter count down. "50-40-30-20...." and guess what. The Boeing test pilots were smacking the hell out of the planes and beating the hell out of them. EYE-HEIGHT is a very real phenomenon in large transports. So, the count down RA was born to give pilots an extra tool to determine their flight path during the last 100 feet. Most any narrow body pilot who transitioned to a WB will tell you that difference in EYE-HEIGHT is an important criteria when transitioning to a WB aircraft. And yes, I am a pilot who "did a lot of training" and beat the hell out of a very nice 767-300 on 4R in BOS on IOE during my first WB landing. Thankfully I never did it a second time.

It was windy yesterday. I live under the flight path. The white rectangle he went over is the Santa Monica Airport. The flight path on the go around has two levels so that the traffic does not encounter wake turbulence. My impression - he was going to fast even though ATC told him to slow down.
@loveguitar2x
@loveguitar2x 8 күн бұрын
As a pilot that flys for a US carrier, if he was flying a fast approach speed, would actually help him arresting the descent (sink) rate and he would’ve floated for a long landing. Unstable approaches do cause landing mishaps, however, if he was unstable, he would’ve gone around at 1000’ above touchdown zone. The fact that the plane landed hard was, in my opinion, he did not carry enough power into the flare or the approach speed was a bit slow so the plane sank down. It does not look that windy and believe me I’ve done landings in winds that makes this looks like a calm day.

This was a simple fuck up by the flight crew that could have been deadly. That said, they were calm and made the right call to go around. This is now a required maneuver after a serious bounce. The captain will take shit for this since he point blank lied. “Go for another try?” 747’s with passengers don’t make touch and go’s. This mistake was serious and must be addressed.

As a non flier my assessment is that pilot flared his plane and generated the landing descent in single instant instead of smooth sequential progression. In the final landing too the plane flares and simultaneously tries to touchdown, before the final butter butter .

Strange to hear that ATC has to ask question while the pilot is in the middle of trying to land that big 747 on second attempt. ATC could have waited until the plane landed.

I missed her asking the pilot for an immediate written report sent via email while the 400 ton plane was still on the down leg as if he was driving a delivery van and missed a left turn into the ghetto.

True, but the pilot monitoring (and dealing with radio work) should not be the pilot flying, otherwise Lufthansa has even bigger problems than this. Besides, ATC wasn't going to get another chance to ask (and it was asked before by the other controller and the pilot was evasive)... after touchdown, he was going to be sent over to ground quickly, missing the window.

@@BruceWatson-dw3ro For some reason the pilot flying was also the pilot communicating ( stress very evident in his voice!) which I agree is somewhat odd (what was the other pilot doing?), but an experienced controller would have noticed this special situation and would have acted accordingly.

It's better to do a circuit because of a hard or unsuccessful landing, which a pilot in training had apparently botched, than to directly lose the main landing gear of a Boeing, or how do we see that?

Because of its size it's actually easier to land than many other aircraft. Drop a small airplane in from 2 ft above the ground and kablamo. The same 2 ft would be nothing for this and it would be a smooth landing. This was a horrible landing, but was handled correctly. German pilots do not get much landing practice in training because of the high cost per landing over there. And with long haul flying you're lucky to get a few landings per month. Less if you're flying was a relief pilot.

Traffic control main goal was to understand the reason behind go around {for paper work} rather than helping landing safely! I understand the airport arrival is jammed, but it's never a reason to prioritize paper work on safety! That pilot is going nowhere. after he lands you can ask him all the F questions you want! Where the F is America going? If an accident happened, they would've blamed Boeing for that

So does something like this have to be reported to the airline? Are there consequences to the pilots? Does the aircraft have to undergo a more thorough pre-flight inspection after a hard landing like this?
@danielsilver3230
@danielsilver3230 8 күн бұрын
Yess in this case like in every other company an internal event will be set up as this will have to be reported to authorities because it is a flight incident. Hard landings are defined in different phases to determine if it can continue or not. Anyway it is likely that it undergoes for a deeper specific inspection. In case of findings it can take months before being back in the air.
