Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)
Wedding Day at Troldhaugen in D major, from Lyric Pieces, Op. 65, No.6 (1892)
(Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen from Lyriske stykker)
Nikolai Lugansky, 2015
From Moscow Philharmonic Society
"There are 66 pieces in ten volumes comprising Grieg's Lyric Pieces, and Wedding Day at Troldhaugen is probably the most popular work in the group. Actually, its music does not quite depict a wedding day; rather, it represents the happy recollection of the composer and his wife Nina's 25th wedding anniversary celebration, which took place in 1892 at their residence at Troldhaugen (Troll Hill), named by the couple after trolls, large (not, as is often thought, small) creatures associated with Norwegian myth. “

I've enjoyed this piece for many years. As a gift to me and my fiance, my sister learned it and played it as our wedding march. Every time I hear it I see my beautiful bride walking toward me to become my wife. That was almost three decades ago.

I just heard this for the first time on the radio--excellent piece. Wish I'd known it in 2013 when my wife and I were in Bergen. Could have seen the Troll Hill, which is I think the translation. Bergen is one rainy town, man. Cute...but wet. :) One other thing: there are four comments here at this point: mine, Sergei rightly calling this beautiful playing, and two being assholes. It's not even slightly accurate criticism either--of the piece or the player. The piece alternates between wistful almost sadness and sped-up dancing-celebration. It captures a wedding well enough. I mean, no one has to like it, but to say something that is X is not X is just moronic. You might not like blue jays, but to call them "theodolites" is, well, objectively wrong. Sorry. Flame away, whatever. Who cares. I'm going to listen to this piece again right here, and enjoy it.

I heard this indirectly from a 1946 film starring Claude Rains in which he sings. It is called "The Pied Piper of Hamelin". Once the opening song sang by the villagers I had to know who had written it.

The beginning is too slow in my opinion. It's supposed to represent the hustle and bustle of a wedding along with the excitement that the wedding party feels. This interpretation is a little calm to me, but to each his own. The execution is impeccable, however.
@Marklar0
@Marklar0 2 жыл бұрын
I dont think it is intended to be hustle and bustle at all. The tempo marking is "tempo di marcia, un poco vivace" and the dynamic is between piano and pianissimo, with Grieg even putting "una corda" and "sempre pianissimo" for the second iteration. The musical language backs up the lightness/calmness of the opening theme....grieg avoids octaves in the bass and stays in a relatively high register, and chooses tight crispy harmonies. Staccatos and rests everywhere. Also notably 4/4 time and not 2/2. Everything about the text and the music suggests a light and slow fairy-tale character
@Andrew-yr6ig
@Andrew-yr6ig 2 жыл бұрын
@@Marklar0 Of course! Your opinion is valid. I was also expressing mine. Grieg himself played it much faster, and I like his version.
@Ageless-yh7gv

I agree. He starts off too slow, and even stodgy. But as he goes along he improves. It's well played, and he has his moments, but I find it doesn't have enough "oomph". Chacun a son gout, as the French say.
@logicking3765
@logicking3765 4 күн бұрын
I beg to differ. The original title of the piece is Well-wishers are coming. It signifies the music is written in the perspective of Grieg and Nina awaiting the coming of the guests. The starting dynamic of the piece is “piano”, yet again signifying the guests are coming from afar. It was by no means a scene of “bustling and hustling”, at least not in the beginning. You may want to study the music a bit in depth to get a more comprehensive perspective of the scene the music is trying to present here.

A pesar de que Lugansky es uno de los mejores pianistas del mundo, está interpretación de Grieg me hace pensar que estaba pasando un mal día... realmente es mala comparada con otras grabaciones que hay.

I normally love Lugansky's playing but this is too slow and sounded like a technical exercise. Maybe he was tired after playing Grieg's concerto

I don't think he was tired after the Piano Concerto. It's a fairly short and easy piano concerto, as piano concertos go.
