In Linyore medicine is malesi or musala .Also note that in luhya the omusala generaly refers to a tree.

Small error for Abasamia. We call mothers Mama (pronounced Maamà - the first /a/ is slightly long and the last one has a falling intonation). Same to father = baabà. What you said is for the Abanyala of Budalang'i. Our final /a/ sounds the same as what you said in /enyumbà/. You did well for the house. The medicine is really off - /amaresi or omusaala/. Omutwè: Great work.

It's so good to the words with the actual pronunciations. I like how you even went ahead and explained the intonation part

The Wanga also have ' amalesi' for medicine (but 'amaleesi' for clouds) and 'amanyasi' for cleansing concoctions

I just watched today and i found some mistakes,,, if you talk of nyala you need to know that we have different nyala, one group from kakamega and the other from Busia and their pronunciation is quite different, in khayo they call father baba, mother mama, those who call papa are either neighbours to bukusu or wanga meaning they were assimilated, house also in khayo you can call inyumba or intsu

Words like cow, banana, a man, a woman, a chair also are named differently across the subtribes.
@luhyalanguageandculture
@luhyalanguageandculture Жыл бұрын
Yes indeed they are named different. It's funny how it's collectively called Luhya nation when such words are completely different.

Also, remember, we have the Nyala sub-tribe in two counties, some in Busia, and others in Kakamega. The ones in Kakamega migrated from Busia and are called "Abanyala ba Ndombi". They speak the same Nyala dialect but it has also been slightly influenced by their current Neighbours, i.e Watsotso, Kabras etc

Yes, there are Nyalas in Busia County but not so much mentioned among the luhyas of Busia. By the way Nyalas of Kakamega have been so much influenced by Kabras because as I was doing my research. I was given words in Nyala stroked with Kabras and Bukusu. They're share most words with Kabras

Malesi simply means treatment and omusala is atrèe since most medicine comes from trees ie herbs and leaves or trunks

Hi, nice video. I believe the Maragoli derived the "runyasi" from "Manyasi", i.e. traditional herbs that some would drink, or be spat onhis or her face as the culprit, by the medicine man, for the purpose of cleansing him/her after having wronged the society or the spirits.
@luhyalanguageandculture
@luhyalanguageandculture Жыл бұрын
That absolutely makes a lot of sense. Actually, in Marachi, it's called manyasi. Drugs administered to counter/cure a broken taboo
@vowuor

Luos also use the word "manyasi" for traditional herbs. Someone clearly borrowed from the other.

Doreen, hahahaha!. Trying to hide your face (11.58), but we all know it was you who said that unmentionable word. What's up with the Marachi calling a respectable body part (Umutwi) the 'A' word. You should change your interpretation of the word 'Mutwi' to 'Umusondo' just like the Maragoli. Jokes aside, could the spelling change the meaning? 'Umutwi' as opposed to 'Mutwi'? We are actually not that far off from each other; Umutwi=Head...Runyasi=Medicine... Vunyasi=Grass...Umusala=Tree, go figure!
