Martin looked to be asserting dominance and was winning the fight early until Ortiz stopped him by TKO in the sixth round. Ortiz's record improved to 33-2.

The ref made the right call, he gave Martin the benefit of the doubt about him being caught up in the ropes and then waved it off when it was apparent he wasn’t fully conscious of his surroundings.

That's how refereeing works in championship fights. If belts are on the line, the ref always gives each fighter lots of chances. Its only in normal fights where a fighter's health is more important than the fight itself.

Nah that gotta be the scariest thing I’ve seen in the ring he hit him so hard he ain’t know what was going on and was just standing there defenseless. It actually helped him that Ortiz swarmed him instead of just lining up one more clean haymaker to put his lights out completely.

At that moment he thought, hang on, I cant feel my face! I've taken one of those kind of shots before and in that moment, your brain is like f this im going on a vacation. The other right hook to the nose, now that was the brain wake up shot. Theres a kind of smell you get when you get hit in the nose like that, it usually comes with a collection of stars just above your eye view. Its a really weird feeling. Boxing is a dangerous sport and Ortiz is very dangerous.

It's not the referee's job to consider the scorecards unless he feels inclined to **within reason**. Him continuing to let him be swarmed on while he's defenseless wasn't reasonable. They're supposed to protect the fighter(s) at all times.

Every time I watch this, I become more convinced that the referee bordered on criminal negligence by not waiving the fight off after Ortiz's 6th round flurry left Martin's mind in another plane of existence. In fact, he should have called it before he went down and got his arm caught in the ropes. Talk about failing to protect the fighters!

Once Martin just stood there, I was screaming at the screen saying, "Stop the fight!... What are you doing??? Stop the fight??" That was over a period of 5-10 seconds. This wasn't a split-second decision to make... he had time.

That could have ended very bad for Martin. If Ortiz had connected cleanly when he was out of it he could have been seriously injured. Ref should have stepped in instantly. Ortiz looks done but he still has that punching power - just too old now to trouble the elite level fighters and worrying that he was knocked off his perch with a few soft punches himself.

Younger Ortiz (for example 2015 version vs Jennings) would obliterate Martin, few rounds and good night. This Ortiz version is very old but credit for getting up and good finishing. I also must say that Martin is improved from AJ fight.
