Today we have a Lea Salonga Miss Saigon Audition reaction. This Reaction video also includes the Rehearsals for the Miss Saigon show. Lea Salonga was still a teenager during this process. This is my first Lea Salonga Reaction video to this iconic Broadway role. Miss Saigon is one of Lea Salonga's most iconic roles and this view gives us a glance at the Audition process had behind the scenes of the rehearsals that Lea Salonga had to go through at such a young age.

Lea was supposed to go to med school and become a physician if she did not get a big break in her theatre career. She was born in the Philippines and considered to have a PERFECT PITCH. She can easily adapt and change her English accent depending on where she’s at or who she’s talking to. She can speak in Aussi accent, British accent, Filipino-english accent, etc. In a nutshell, LEA is highly intellectual.

She graduated top of her class in high school. She was and is very intelligent. She started her acting career as young as 6 or 7, had her own TV show called "Love Lea," which I used to watch. Now, married and with child, her daughter also has a beautiful voice.

Lea said that she has a great set of ears that she easily adopt to the accent unconsciously and it changes wherever she is. Sometimes you'll hear her with an Aussie accent and Filipino accent in the Philippines. The reason also they cast her as the lead. They observed that Lea can easily adopt to changes, like when they give her songs then changes it in the afternoon. The pianist also played it in 3 different version/keys and when asked to sing, she then answered with "Which versions do you want me to sing?" they didn't know Lea was paying so much attention to little changes.

The Americans had Clark Airforce base and a Naval Base at Subic Bay in the Philippines so her English accent often sounds more American.

Filipinos are known to be great imitators. So, yes, I can see how she can very quickly pick up and copy British, American, or any accent. And she had some exposure to the theater even as a child.

the girl with lea during sunset is her understudy, her friend from theater. her name is monique wilson. they practically grew up together. they sound so similar and both are so talented. a lot of the original cast were filipinos. after exhausting a lot of auditions from a lot of places until they landed in manila, they hauled a lot of pinoy talent. miss saigon became a national pride. ❤️❤️❤️

I met her with my friends outside the theatre after we bought the tickets, she with her mom having coffee. She was so nice and we had a short chat. Her British accent that time was so on point.

As many people have said, she has been performing in theater from age 7 and played her first lead at age 9 (Annie). She had a gold album at age 10, and had done tv and film before she auditioned for Miss Saigon, so she wasn’t inexperienced. But of course, this was her international big break and introduced her to the rest of the world. The world was impressed with her talent and professionalism. Filipinos call her “the voice that conquered the world” because she was one of the first Filipinos to become internationally known.

Lea is a smart girl and was only 15 or 16 at the time. In one of her interviews she said the accent is for locals to understand her. She also speaks with a different accent when she's in the US. She was born and raised in the Philippines.

Hola Luis! Since you are now immersed in Lea's world, you may want to go back to the very early years of her musical theater career in the Philippines. There's a video here in KZfaq of a 9 year D Lea Salonga singing "Maybe" and "Tomorrow" from the Musical "Annie" in which she played the lead role. The musical was produced by Repertory Philippines, a leading producer of musicals in the country. This role was her first lead role. She started as one of the kids in the "King and I" when she was 7 years old.

Re: the British accent She's just that smart. Hahahaha! From observation through years of watching her, she uses the accent of the people she's talking to. She can speak in a British accent, American, and still sounds a native when she speaks in her mother tongue Filipino.

She was 17 when she auditioned in Manila. The show debuted in London's West End actually where she earned an Olivier Award. It then debuted in Broadway a year later where Lea reprised her leading role earning her a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical.

Lea Salonga started at a young age singing and performing in front of people...at first with pop songs but once she got into the Philippine classical theater, she learned fast and adapted well. Even at aged 7, she has appeared as one of the Von Trapp children in "The Sound of Music". By 9 years old, she starred as main role as "Annie", the orphan girl character. Then, another musical, "The King and I, and so on to other musical roles. So, that's why she was so composed and confident (at 17 y.o.) auditioning (last leg of world-wide search for "Kim") for Miss Saigon launch in West End in London. When she was chosen as "Kim", the rest as they say, is history.

To answer some of your questions: 1. She was 17 when she auditioned for Ms. Saigon. 2. Her accent shifts (american/British) depending on the person she's talking to. That is how good she is! You should also watch some of her interviews.

About her accent - it’s true that her accent changes depending on who she is speaking with. She has a good ear and picks them up pretty well. You can watch lots of interviews she has done in the last 40+ years in the business: she had a British accent in many interviews she did while she did Miss Saigon in London. When she does American interviews she sounds American. When she does interviews in the Philippines, she speaks in English a lot, though you might hear her Filipino accent more strongly. The first song Lea was performing wasn’t just her being herself - Kim is innocent. The second song is Gigi’s - a bargirl only interested in nabbing an American GI to take her away.

No other singer or artist can put lea salonga in a corner. Her musicality is beyond perfection, there are many great singers in the philippines and in broadway but lea salonga deserve a high respect and honor because of her humility and musicality. Her contribution in broadway and in the philippines is indeed a detach of an artistic professionalism.

Love your reactions. She was 17 here and it was before the london premiere. Then it wasn't to broadway I saw it on opening night in april of 1991 and she was incredible and been following her career ever since. You can watch the full musical on you tube she reprised the role in 2000 in Manilla

Before this audition, she had been appearing in plays. My late wife also was in the theater during her college days, and she can easily pass as a British in the way she spoke when she wanted to or had to.

Where everyone is sitting around singing with the orchestra is called the sitzprobe. It’s the first time the cast sings with the full orchestra (previously just rehearsing with only a piano) and it’s usually very exciting to hear full orchestrations for the first time.

Note that this rehearsed and opened on the West End of London. That is why she very briefly spoke English with some British influence, but her accent in English is basically American (as you will see in more recent videos). Miss Saigon came to Broadway a couple years later, with Salonga again in the lead.

Shes versatile. She can copy accents. Maybe because of her experiences in theater plays. What I like in her is the clarity of her voice as well as her pronunciation. Although shes not a perfect singer, I like her.

2.44 - 1st time Lea heard the song and was taught to her. You can see/hear that she is still committing mistakes. 5.06 - she already knows the song at this point. 12.22 - 1st time they heard the score in full orchestra. This is why they are in awe. Until this point, all they hear is the piano. So, listening to the score in full orchestra is overwhelming for them.
