Luke, I know being a misanthrope who values personal integrity over professional validation is a tough gig to land in the middle of. But for so many of us who follow your work, we really respect and appreciate your ethics, brother. It's really a defining aspect of your displayed character and I hope you take great pride in that reality. Agitators are paramount!

Weird take on Gladiator, just because it's not the godfather or shawshank redemption, doesn't mean it's not great afterall the movie have 12 noms and got best picture, feel like a snob take, sometimes simple is just enough to become great if you masterfully perform just like Alex Pereira or John Wick movies. In the end of the day movies are subjetive just like any art and the experts(academy members) gave that movie the best acolytes so, I guess I am a simpleton.

It's even funnier when you hear what Luke's favorite films are, they also have super simple stories/plots. Any writer, that's actually good, will acknowledge that a simple story is actually the hardest to get right, or made great, because they have less to work with and have to put more effort into the details to make it look effortless and simple.

While an media industry has grown around MMA in the last 10 years, you and Ariel are in the small category of personalities that have a unique voice. Many fall into the hype, controversy and 'who's the greatest ever?' category. The industry would be better if there are more unique voices but as you have shared it is not easy nor fun to be different. I've learned a lot by listening to you. Thanks for all that you do!

I disagree with Lukes take on Jiri going to middleweight. He wants to get belt again. What the alternative? Be a gatekeeper at light heavyweight knowing he can’t beat Periera? If he can get to middleweight in a healthy manner, his length and deadly striking will give anyone of those middleweight problems and he has a better chance of getting that belt than he does light heavyweight

For the gladiator topic I think you could benefit from establishing how each camp is framing it. From the frame of art, gladiator doesn't stand up to the greats in the cinema category. But, from the frame of entertainment, an argument could be had to put gladiator among the greats. It ultimately comes down to how you see cinema, art or entertainment.
@gilbertoflores7397
@gilbertoflores7397 20 күн бұрын
Gladiator was Ridley Scott around his peak before his massive falloff. That movie is very well directed and a very good representation of what the film is. Plenty of movie before were beloved like Ben-Hur and Spartacus, it falls along those like of the historical narrative that the academy likes. It's more strange how people are retroactively hating the film, because it was one of the last few times that the most popular film was able to win the Oscar. Simple stories or plots are not bad, they're even harder to make into a good film, because mistakes are easier to make, some of Luke's favorite movies have simple stories, so I don't get why try and use that against a film.

37:41 a) the best thing is a one-on-one tutor, at least an hour a week, 2) listen to the news in Spanish every day, and try to read one news article per day 3) watch movies and tv shows without the subtitles, preferably from the region you're going to, every day 4) of all the learning programs for speaking, Pimsleur can actually get you speaking and understanding on a decent level if you do the entire 5 stage program, 30 lessons per stage, 30 minutes each (no I don't work for them). Overall, expect to spend at least 100 hours intensively to get to basic competency.

having lived in Colombia for three years I would say that Argentina is the most racist, followed by Chile, then Uruguay, then everyone else, and then Colombia. Colombia is the most diverse of all South American countries and I don’t think luke portrayed the way they use skin color as an adjective rather than as a noun. In my experience living there and dating a Colombian and living with her and her mother I would say skin color is used simply as a way of describing what someone looks like and can also be used as a term of endearment. Just like a Colombian woman may call her regular sized boyfriend “mi gordito” she is not calling him a fat ass, man or woman may refer to their darker skinned partner as “mi negrita Hermosa”. It does not have the slavery/racial connotations that it does in the USA. The USA is a unique place in that respect and its obsession with race-for reasons-is not applicable to the rest of the world, and Luke thinking that it is actually shows that he does behave like a gringo in the negative sense of the word. He judges everywhere else in the world like he is sitting on his throne in the USA. The only people who get negatively called gringo are people that behave like entitled assholes. I never once had anyone make fun of my Spanish or skin color when I lived and worked in Colombia. They knew I respected their culture and I was excited to learn all about it. On the other hand, if you act like an ass or behave like speaking the language is beneath you then they can sense the gringo entitlement from miles away. Just like dumb disrespectful tourists who treat Medellin like a place just for sex tourism will get robbed and people who show respect to the culture and people will not.

@@godskingssages4724 I don't think Luke is talking like he is in his throne. I don't think "mi negrita" can be all that affectionate; it inherently carries a differentiation by race. Most people are not offended by it, but that doesn't make it right. This type of latin american covert racism and the way it's conflated with affection is the very problem and why it's so difficult to even talk about it.

Luke, I’m a long time listener and will continue to be along for the ride. Why? You’re one of the few who tell it like it is, you also give fans a peak behind the curtain into how messy the business is, plus you’re not afraid to say what other journalist run from out of fear of rejection from their peers or from promoters. You have to respect that….i think deep down, even the UFC as well as fighters respect that, even though it may not be fun to be on the end of that specific criticism when talking about that headline for that moment.

I like him well enough but my fucking god can he be obnoxious. It doesn't occur to him that the film is great but just not for him, or that he misunderstood it. No, instead, it's a 'superhero movie' for 'simpletons' and his perspective is so unique and special and refined and everyone who holds it as a great movie is a 'simpleton'. My fucking god. Most people get that kinda insufferable shit out of their system in the teen years.

I don't get why everyone is saying jon is now sloppy and overweight at heavyweight. Obviously, he's worked on specific parts of his game, I think, at heavyweight, he is definitely working on a grapple heavy approach due to the fact that most of the fighters are going to be less nimble at heavyweight than light heavyweight, he's obviously alot stronger at the higher Weight division, I often find myself asking how many times does he have to prove that he is levels above fight Iq wise above anybody already in the fight game.

100% agree on Gladiator. Ridley’s a great filmmaker but the movie’s just fine. And a pet peeve of mine with his historical epics is how much of his modern western worldview he projects onto his characters. Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Robin Hood are all guilty of this. The Last Duel surprisingly isn’t. Gladiator 2’s trailer almost looks closer to historical fantasy, which I honestly think will be better.

@@rhysjones1108 when has a movie ever been historically accurate? It's a simple story done well, and it was also incredibly popular with the general public. A reason why people (mainly critics) don't hold it in higher regards. That movie was Ridley Scott around his prime, so the directoring was not bad, it was well shot and all the technical issues people bring up. There have been great movies in the past like Ben-Hur and Spartacus that it built off of, and those movies are well regarded to this day.
