Hi there, Mostly 70-80% of the companies don't verify degree.Most of the big names companies does that. So I just listed on my resume that I had a degree in BA and all in some small company and got accepted and build it from there. And here I am landed the job. I mean like it's still could be illegal thing to do but not on macro extent. Just to get through the interview. Don't wannabe left behind with those social norms of having a degree and all that when you are actually good.Degree should not be a barrier stopping you. Kachao 😉

Same here that happened to me. I also didn't have any college degree. I started out as an entry level operations specialist where I had the time to look into one of Uber's learning programs specifically SQL. After finishing the SQL learning program, I began creating my own queries and got promoted as a junior data analyst. Then other opportunities came and then I landed more higher job positions. Now I'm the head of data analytics for an ecommerce company.

I am a Data Scientist without a degree (I didn't even finish High School). However, I can't share any secret tips since honestly I was just very lucky. The first company I applied for found me very charming and hired me the same day. After that, it just snowballed. Employers seem to love experience over a degree. I have to admit I was and still am very passionate about DS and expressed it heavily in all my interviews. The recruiters love it.

This is very inspiring! I also dropped out of high school and I'm very conflicted on what I should do but I have always been drawn to computers so Data Scientist or Data Analyst feels like a potential future for me. Did you learn everything by yourself or did you take any certification courses?
@Bear-zl5ic
@Bear-zl5ic Ай бұрын
@@ShadowMentor I learnt everything myself. I’ve tried some courses but they’re all so boring that I just can’t tolerate them. I’ve learnt everything by having an idea and then figuring out to how to achieve it. The struggle seems to cement the knowledge rather well. If you love data then go for it.

So I had a similar thing happen to me.. I had no education horrible school grades and I just turned thirty had a kid and was feeling the pressure of needing a career so long story short, Started writing code in 2016 then landed a job in 2019 worked full stack for 3 years, got a new job as a consultant got hired by a major tech company to data analysis knew nothing about it but just told them yeah I can do it... but confidence was the key and understanding the logic of things helped the most. In essence I would say get the basics of Excel then choose a BI like powerBI or Qlik and just start creating what ever you can then slowly bring in a data base for example SQL or PostgreSQL, and I guess python. I already learned other languages like JS so I use those. Anyway the take away is that you don't need college its all AMBITION and DRIVE!! seriously you can do it just go for it!!!

I'm half way through the google program now and am on pace to finish early-November. I've already updated my LinkedIn and resume to that of a Jr Data Analyst and hope to start building my portfolio next week so I can start reaching out to recruiters. I found a local networking group on meetup and am building LinkedIn connections (especially other women) that I can reach out to. I'm taking a fake it till you make it/it's about who you know approach and hope I have enough key words in my resume and confidence to get me in the door. I've been a nanny and household manager the last 15 years and have never held a corporate job, or even a desk job before so I don't anticipate this being an easy process.

@@ShadowMentor I did finish the program, but never pursued employment as a data analyst. While I was doing the google program I was going through IVF and was at a part-time job for their fertility benefits. I finally got pregnant in January and stayed on at that employer because I met my insurance deductible and those medical cost savings were greater than the income I'd make leaving. Not to mention how difficult it would have been finding a job that would hire me visibly pregnant and getting time off for the crazy amounts of appointments required during a high risk pregnancy. I'm currently staying home and enjoying my kids and assessing what the best next steps are for our family. In all likelihood I'm looking for part-time and it's unlikely I'll find data analysis positions that will fit my desired hours and available childcare.

My degree is in Finance and I was hired on as a financial analyst that turned out to have a lot of data analyst’s duties. I got the job with help from one SQL class I took during my undergrad and fell in love with data/BI analysis at that job. I'm a career paramedic who burnt out after working in the war in Ukraine - I realized I really needed a new career, and I really love my family and life at home. Data Analytics really fit my personality, lifestyle, and thinking pattern, but I really had no idea how to transition into this field at 35 with bad math skills. Honestly Luke you make it really easy, not only with shout outs to others in the field that I've learned from, but also with these really interesting and well thought out videos. Your work has educated me and also given me so many insights and motivation. It's also really clever to see that they're all answering data driven questions, are well made, and get straight to the point, but don't feel like a tutorial - instead like mini documentaries (except they're funny and entertaining). Really gives me insight into your work and your way of approaching life, and it's a great example to follow. Anyways this salty tactical medic is retired and I'm currently on track to be a full data nerd and job ready in about 3 months, wish me the best! I'll be posting updates along the way, and I really hope one day I can have a chat with you Luke! All the best.

In this job I slowly learned Power BI and some soft skills like people and Client management (I was promoted to Team Lead). Our Project ended and I was looking for a new job, possibly in Data analytics. I learned SQL in 1 week (thanks to Mike Dane, but I had minor coding experience from before) and started applying for jobs. I was given a shot as an Assistant Analyst 18 months ago because of my demonstrated Excel skills in a different role in another department with my company. I was told I needed to learn SQL and Power BI for the role. I immersed myself in SQL, Power Query, Power Pivot, & Power BI and have surpassed everyone in my department in knowledge and skills. The person who hired me has since left the company for greener pastures and I was told by the new management there are no opportunities for advancement unless someone leaves the company and I get a degree. Now I find myself looking for opportunities elsewhere and the lack of a degree has kept a lot of doors closed. The people I work with all have degrees, but their skills are obsolete. They want to stick with Excel and they want me to dumb down my work because they are unable to troubleshoot "if" they get an error. I got a lot of great tips from this video and it gives me hope. 😃KZfaq & LinkedIn Learning have been my go to resources and I use Notion to keep notes on all the videos that have given me breakthroughs and have built my own quick reference library.

This should be less about being college degree versus no college degree, but rather about whether you have something to prove your capability or not. As interviewees made it clear, they did go through difficulties without college degrees. Let's not look away from it and accept it as it is. But it is not impossible to land a data job without a degree IF, you can showcase something that can make up for not having a degree. 1:43 This guy was in the military for 6 years, this 2:00 guy actually some work experience, and 2:06 took the chance to study computer science in a that is not in his native language, English, AND took time to complete Goolge Data Analytics Certificate. The bottom line is, if you already have a college degree, great. You are less likely to be filtered out from the get go. So, spare the rest of your time to really work on a project and archive it well to be able to show it to your prospective employer. If you don't have a college degree, be aware that you may be rejected from the beginning. But don't let that reality become an excuse for you to not try. Keep track of all of your activities related to data science, until you encounter an employer who will appreciate your work thus far.

I have an undergraduate degree but it's Marketing & Sales related, and I had 10+ years of experience in that field as Product Manager and Sales Manager, but given I was lacking data to make decisions I had to make my own dashboards which eventually led the company to create a full-time BI position for me 4 years ago and I finally enjoy what I do for a living. In my case, Power Query in Excel was my entry point to know the basics for more serious data analysis with Powerbi, SQL, Python and R and studying a degree in Applied Data Science for 2 years now. I have a degree that has nothing to do with CS or IT whatsoever and after consistently posting my accomplishments and milestones on LinkedIn from all the coursera and udemy courses I'm taking I was able to land an interview for a BI analyst position. This was out of nowhere too, a recruiter found my page and saw me regularly posting, I didn't even finish my Google Data Analytics certificate at the time she contacted me. I'm currently going into the second round of interviews so its too early to say if I get the job or not but I will say that the hiring manager (who is also the CIO of the company) really appreciated my enthusiasm and willingness to learn topics like SQL and data visualization with Tableau. He was impressed that Im putting in the hard work and even attending in-person conferences to make up for not having a CS or IT degree. I got my BA in English and Spanish (double major), was going to be a teacher, then got my Master's in Spanish, still on the teacher path, but am now doing the Google certificate and hoping to pivot into data analytics. As I'm working on this career change, I constantly wonder, is my English/Spanish BA, plus that MA put me on the same level as having no degree in the eyes of recruiters? Of course there are soft skills and all, plus bilingual, I could lean on, but I do feel insecure about not having a degree that meshes well with data analytics. Thanks again for the video! I used to complain a lot about the systems that we have to use, and about 10 years ago they invited me to the national headquarters to test a new system, find bugs and suggest improvements. They liked what I did, and then I've gotten a few management positions in the last 8-9 years, always related to corporate systems. Right now, I'm a data analyst more than anything, and no one ever asked me for a degree. I don't know everything I need for my job, but whatever it is, I became really good at learning it fast.

Sorry a quick question please I am currently analysing an employees layoff dataset available on kaggle. It has 1574 records and 9 columns, one of the columns name "Total_laid_off" (how many employees were laid off from the organisation,datatype: Int), it has 442 records with missing values. what should I do in this case to treat the missing values? should I replace them with median value or shall I drop missing values from the dataset? I have a similar question for another column name "percentage of employees laid off" (percentage of employees fired out of the total workforce). in this case, also shall I replace 552 missing values with the median percentage value? What could be the best course of action? I personally thought I should replace the missing values with median values because dropping so many rows would result in a good amount of loss of information.
