Chorus:
Just 'cause I'm leavin'
It don't mean that I won't be right by your side
When you need me
And you can't see me in the middle of the night
Just close your eyes and say a prayer
It's okay, I know you're scared when I'm not here
But I'll always be right there
Even though I'm leavin', I ain't goin' nowhere

Both my parents died in 2002 when I was 17. I joined the military and did several tours in Fallujah, iraq with the Marine Corps infantry. I just found out yesterday that my wife is pregnant. I'm now 36yrs old and would give anything to be able to give my dad the news. I've listened to this song 20 times tonight and I can't stop crying. I haven't cried in almost 20yrs. It breaks me down when the boy in this song is going off to war and he's scared. So was I. And now the part when he says "I cant do this on my own" is how I feel right now.

I heard this song for the first time a week ago and listen to it everyday. It breaks my heart when I’m at work 10hrs a days, 6 days a week. I feel that he barely sees me but it’s just the sacrifice we have to make as fathers to make sure there’s food on the table, roof over their heads, and have a better life than the one I had.

This song hits me hard. My dad was my hero when I was a little boy. He was the biggest strongest person I knew. He would always scare away the monsters. I deployed to Afghanistan on a combat tour in 2010. We cried our eyes out on the phone the day I shipped out. He told me he’d always be there no matter what. My dad passed away in 2016. Hardest days of my life was saying goodbye to him. I took care of him by myself for 6 months and it broke me badly to lose him. This song sums up my entire life with my father. Thank you Luke Combs for this song. God bless you 🙏🏻

Damn man..I have a similar story. I just went in a bit of the opposite direction..found myself in prison. The only person that wrote me and cared while I was there was my dad. I’ve got a hundred letters from the 2 ish years I was there. When I got out he got sick again, I moved Amarillo from Houston to take care of him. Ultimately over the next year I nursed him to a horrible death. I’m grateful I was able to be there for him. He wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to do what I had to..either way, I’ll never stop seeing that biggest strongest most bad ass man that I knew in my head exactly as that. I’ll miss him forever and I feel your pain brother.

This is so beautiful. He has a singing style that is so imperfect and breaks so many rules for 'good technique' and maybe he wont be able to do that forever.... But how can you criticize this level of beauty and emotion? This is a simple and honest man with a talent for transferring his soul to our ears. A truly special musician.

Daddy, I'm afraid, won't you stay a little while? Keep me safe 'cause there's monsters right outside Daddy, please don't go, I don't wanna be alone 'Cause the second that you're gone they're gonna know Before he went to bed he grabbed my hand and said Just 'cause I'm leavin' It don't mean that I won't be right by your side When you need me And you can't see me in the middle of the night Just close your eyes and say a prayer It's okay, I know you're scared when I'm not here But I'll always be right there Even though I'm leavin', I ain't goin' nowhere Dad, we'll be late, and Uncle Sam don't like to wait He's got a big old plane that's gonna take me far away I know I act tough, but there's a churnin' in my gut 'Cause I just can't call you up when things get rough Before I left, he hugged my neck and said Just 'cause you're leavin' It don't mean that I won't be right by your side When you need me And you can't see me in the middle of the night Just close your eyes and say a prayer It's okay, I know you're scared, I might be here But I'll always be right there Even though you're leavin', I ain't goin' nowhere Daddy, I'm afraid, won't you stay a little while? I never thought I'd see the day I had to say goodbye Daddy, please don't go, I can't do this on my own There's no way that I can walk this road alone Well, daddy grabbed my hand and said Just 'cause I'm leavin' It don't mean that I won't be right by your side When you need me And you can't see me in the middle of the night Just close your eyes and say a prayer It's okay, boy, I ain't scared I won't be here, but I'll always be right there Even though I'm leavin', I ain't goin' nowhere I ain't goin' nowhere

This song hurts so much having a military dad that I can't be with very often, but it's so good, so glad I was able to see it live in Amsterdam and show Luke that he makes my dad's days over there easier too

This song is beautiful & hits straight in the heart. I lost my dad nearly 5 years ago, total daddy's girl, but this takes me through every part of my life, especially when I was with him as he passed.. Makes me cry everytime

I can't tell you how much I love this song and how sad it makes me at the same time. I lost my Dad to cancer just about two years ago now and every time i hear it on the radio I totally lose it. Luke, thank you so much for writing this one. I sure do miss my Dad and think about him every day, but this song helps me get through.

The mark of a great song is when it can be sung campfire style - just a guitar and a voice. No autotune, pedals, post-production, terrific effort. Thanks.

I lost my dad in Feb of this year 😢 and this song has been go to bawl like a baby song. The pain isn't getting any easier if anything just harder. He died in am instance and I was there to say goodbye. You take for granted the time you have with loved ones and comes like a thief in the night when they pass like my father did. I loved him so much and I just hope he knew how proud I was of him and hope that he is watching over me just as proudly. If you have a loved one or ones that are still here with you, don't wait until tomorrow to let them know how important they are and you love them. Give them affection and love. Hug their neck and squeeze them like it may be the last. God please hold my father as dear to you as I did to me.

Got 2 great kids and a beautiful wife. Work hard to give them everything they need. My oldest moved out a few years ago and my youngest is planning to move out soon. It’s an old saying but time flies. I pray I taught them enough- showed them enough and loved them enough to take them out into this tough world. Did i prepare them enough for the time when im no longer on this earth. Songs like this really hit home --I hope these talented artist keep doing there magic.

This song has me fucked up. My dad was my hero growing up. He was my best friend, my rock, the only person I could trust. As I got older, I realized my father wasn’t who I thought he was. After I joined the Corps, we had a falling out. He wasn’t there when I deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. He didn’t call, write, check up on me. Nothing. I’m now listening to this song trying to put my 2 year old to sleep, crying my eyes out. I’ll promise to never make him feel the way my old man did when I needed him the most. I’ll always be right there for you Adam. I love you son.
