Linda was the first woman to fill arenas; you're right, she could do it all. And whenever Linda covered a song, she made it her own. Every time. Love her!

Actually Different Drum where she performed with the Stone Ponies before the Eagles became her back up band was her first big hit in the late sixties.

When I was a studen at UC Santa Barbara in the 70s, one could take in small concerts on a tight budget. I was able to see Linda Ronstadt., Bonnie Raitt, the Doobie Bros, Maria Muldare, Phoebe Snow (Poetry Man), Jackson Brown, Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end. Thanks, Luke, for the memories.

Linda always had great backing musicians. Andrew Gold on the guitar here is one of them. He was played for a number of other artists too and had some success as a solo artists. His best known is writing and performing "Thank You for Being a Friend".

"You´re No Good" is a song written by Clint Ballard Jr, first performed by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963. It has since been covered by many artists. Some of them are The Swinging Blue Jeans in 1964, and Linda Ronstadt in 1974, whose version was a number one hit in the United States. Thanks for a great music video by Linda Ronstadt. 🙂

Midnight Special Dec 21, 1973 was when this was aired. Linda used it to close her shows for her "Don't Cry Now" tour. This song was recorded with a different and better guitar solo IMO on her breakout album "Heart Like a Wheel" the following year. "You're No Good" and "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You) were released as singles to radio on the same day Nov 25, 1974. One to pop the other to country. 2 months later both songs had rocketed to the top of the charts. YNG to pop/rock and R&B, ICHI to country. Linda was the first artist to ever have songs at the top of 3 different charts at the same time. Her career was filled with other firsts. First female to have 3 platinum albums in a row. The streak didn't stop till she had 5 then she went to Broadway to play Mabel in the musical Pirates of Penzance (earned a Tony nomination and a Golden Globe nomination when it was turned into a movie), first female to sell out stadiums and arenas, first & only artist to be awarded Grammys in 5 different genres, first rock star to record songs from the Great American Songbook. She's an amazing talent that sang what was in her heart at the time, the ultimate crossover artist. Record labels would say no, it will ruin your career. She'd do it anyway and the labels would jump in when it started to take off and become successful. Her "Canciones de Mi Padre" (Songs of My Father) recorded in 1987, sung in Spanish, is still the #1 selling non English album in American recording history. As Garth Brooks so eloquently stated on the red carpet when Linda was an honoree at the Kennedy Center, "She has more balls than most men in this business."

Great reaction, again, Luke. Love the way you talk about not only the lyrics, but add comments on all the relevant pop culture vibes (clothing, hair styles, backup singers, etc.) and the mood, emotional power and gestures of the vocalists.

Linda Ronstadt had a lot of great talent backing her. The guitarist is Andrew Gold who wrote and performed "Thank You For Being A Friend." Don Henley and Glenn Frey were in her band before they formed the "Eagles." She was a major part of contemporary in the 70's.

The best singer- not just most versatile, but best- singer of her generation. When she first got "big" and was touring, Neil Young decided to have her open for him on his Canadian tour. She'd never played arenas. after a couple shows, the audience reaction was so overwhelming that Neil did not feel at all comfortable "following" Linda. So, she got her own tour, and on from there. No one can follow that- maybe Elvis in '57, possibly, but he'd have had to change his undies, no doubt

Damn I miss this. Back when we only had three channels plus Pbs, The midnight special was just that until MTV blew my mind. You are doing right by reviewing live performances. You get to hear what they actually were capable of. Try doing live with new artists, they just can't without all their electric gizmos.

I agree about the sound manipulation but I must add something. The performers now need a group of "dancers" to be moving around the stage while the vocalist is gyrating and usually lip syncing. Also, what about the costumes? I guess they need all the distractions that they can muster to cover up the fact that they have very little talent.

I just subscribed to your channel and It is time for you to listen to one of Linda's best songs: Adios written by Jimmy Webb. Linda asked the Beach Boys to back her on the song but for whatever reason they refused. By this time Brian Wilson had left the Beach Boys and he agreed to be her backup.and do it by himself alone. Here is what Linda had to say about the collaboration In the studio, under Brian’s direction, we recorded his harmony parts for “Adios” with five separate tracks of unison singing on each of the three parts, fifteen vocal tracks in all. He didn’t seem concerned if some of the tracks veered slightly out of tune, but took advantage of the slight “chorused” effect it created when he came back into the control room to mix the harmony tracks into the creamy vocal smoothness instantly recognizable as the Beach Boys. Brian was making up the harmonies as he went along, but sometimes, when he was having difficulty figuring out a complicated section, he would scold himself and say that he needed to work for a time at the piano. However, when he sat down at the piano, he never played any part of “Adios,” but instead would play a boogie-woogie song, very loud in a different key. After a few minutes of this he would go back to the microphone and sing the parts perfectly, without a trace of hesitation. . Here is the song.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8yJibCnqqjTYoE.html&ab_channel=MeganMull
