The mere fact that about 90% of the traffic at the Tenzing-Hillary airport is made of Dornier 228 and De Havilland Canada Twin Otters forces a high respect in me for these models.

This is like operations on aircraft carrier. Minus all that coloured vest crew that's seamlessly working on the deck. Very tight and dangerous working environment. Good job guys.

In winter1980 I hiked in from Lamasungu about 80 miles away from Lukla. After viewing Everest from Kala Patur I hiked back down to Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu. The landing area was just a grass field with grazing Yaks.

There's no reason for the "most dangerous" airport to be so hustle and bustle. It's all about the money

Actually, given the weather conditions that limit flight at times, there is. The Goma Air could've stood to wait a few more seconds until the Otter had cleared, tho.

Yes at approach. Not near and over runway (but if you really want - yoy have a little chance to make a left turn with jump over town and descending for speed increase over gorge. But extremelly bad landing is safier then attempt to go around)

Is there any landing aides at all there like Vasi. Or even a Vor, Dme. I certainly haven’t seen a Vasi.
@rustyrust8044 жыл бұрын
don't know much about airport technology but as far as i know, there are no aides. I know this because there are no landings if pilot cannot see runway. There are cases of tourists stranded at this airport even a week due to fog around airport. I think atc of this airport is handled by just one employee.

@mango26144 жыл бұрын
@@alfonsosoriano171 Yes. That's the closest airport to Everest and Everest Base Camp. And you need to walk for around 5-6 days to reach the base camp. But it is possible that the passengers are the local people who are returning to Lukla or Namche Bazaar
@sudarshanrajbhandari3914 жыл бұрын
They are low mountains, probably with no names. If you walk for about a day and a half, you will get the first glimpse of Mt Everest as you ascend to reach Namche Bazaar (3400m), a major stop with a lot of outlets. From Namche Bazaar you will get a better view of the famous peak. However, if you climb about 500m, you reach Hotel Everest View (holds a Guinness world record as a star hotel situated at the highest point in the world) from where you will get a panoramic view of the majestic Himalayan peaks including Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse.

@perrinmichael45045 жыл бұрын
DC 3, 747 or 380 can land there but not in one piece. They would normally call that a suicidal crash landing. If they need to land within the airport perimeter then they have to pitch the nose down in a vertical decent... even so, some pieces might spill out of the airport. Hope that helps.
@rustyrust8044 жыл бұрын
@@perrinmichael4504 right. Even in cases of failure, the chances of a large plane landing in single piece is greater in a field than this airport.
