Thank you so much for your service man. The first time I ever broke down and couldn't pull myself together was at my cousin's (who is a marine) funeral. He was KIA in Iraq in 03 and his marine brothers were at his funeral. Seeing these young man that are some of the toughest and bravest men on the planet break down and weep at my cousins casket just broke me completely, especially knowing what my cousin did and what him and his brothers went through over there. Your service really does mean a lot to me so thank you from the bottom of my heart. One of my cousin's marine brothers that was there at the battle of Nasiriyah with him wrote a song. You might like it so here it is. It's called Nasiriyah kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7N5Y8mdx8-YqKc.htmlsi=L5KUrL2bloMTiOyk

It's honestly the phrase "It's my turn, to chase the monsters away" that get's me. Like a full circle of life moment, where your dad looks after you, scaring the monsters away under your bed. To the sad realisation that your dying father is probably terrified of the darkness, the unknown... the monsters. And it's your turn to make him feel secutre, and chase the monsters away.

I don't see it that way, i think about it more that a father dying is worried about how his son's gonna make it through life and all the "monsters" in it without being protected by him. So he gives him calm by saying that he doesn't needs help anymore for chasing the monsters away. That's my pov tho, not saying u're wrong, just wanted to share my way to see it.

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. My sister in law called me in Puerto Rico and told me my father was dying to come back to Virginia. It was cancer. My father was a big Irish cop in New York he was everything to me as a child. He was a hard man we never said i love you to each other not one time. But when i got home i couldn't believe how small he got he couldn't talk or move. I would sit in his room at night while my family slept in their rooms. About after a week i noticed his breathing and heart rate slowed down. I stood up held his hand and i told him Dad if i had ever shamed you, hurt you, please forgive me, i forgive you, dad, I love you. I kissed his forehead. He passed away 10 min later. I then had to go wake my mother and tell her dad passed away. I woke my siblings also. Mom left us soon after. My father was the only man my mother knew, she never even had dated a man till my father. I miss them.

James wrote the song as a tribute to his dad in case he didn't survive. As a child our dads scare away the monsters in the closet. Now it was James turn. I don't know how ANYONE can watch this heartfelt expression of love, especially from a tough military guy like James, and not be moved. How can you not? It is a universal sentiment when we lose someone. Like he said "the time is gone". It goes so quickly so appreciate your loved ones and tell them while you still can. The line that gets me is "Daddy won't you just close your eyes". How many people hold on until they feel they have permission to go. I know I told that to my own unconscious mother. I like his song "You're Beautiful" among others. ❤ Hope you got that ice cream! 🍦

I am 48 and my parents were in a horrible crash last year. My dad was not hurt but my mom was severely injured. It was agony booking the flight back home trying to get there as fast as I could. I was wholly unprepared for how she was and all the tubes and machines. She was eventually transferred to home care after over 200 days. I had time to tell her just how much she meant to me and spent a lot of time with her in my 2 trips for several weeks each back home. I talk to her on the phone daily. She's not the same, she never will be. We will lose her at some point, maybe in a year, maybe 2, no one knows. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how fortunate I am that my parents are still here know that your parents loved you and would likely be so proud of the person you are today. this song is so moving, it says everything.

James Blunt was in the British army and served in the Balkans conflict of the early 90s. As was his father before him. His songs are from the soul. There are many more which are about subjects that will break you just as this one did. Goodbye My Lover, No Bravery, Carry You Home and most recently The Girl that never was. Each one if these is absolutely beautifuly written and sung but will hit you as hard as this one but for different reasons.

One of my personal takes on this song, and part of why it hits so hard is because we English rarely ever share our true feelings, so so many of us die, or have loved ones die, having never said the kinds of things James Blunt says in this song. We're raised to keep our emotions to ourselves our whole lives, and it's often the thing we regret most in the end. Many of us couldn't even bring ourselves to say half of what's in this song. So hearing those words said aloud is like being hit by a freight train

Blunt explained to Apple Music: "I idolized this man throughout my childhood, but as we grew older, I realized that he had his own fallibilities, and that's an awesome thing to see because you suddenly can become friends then. And then obviously as parents get older, the responsibility starts to weigh on the children that look after them. Although that can be painful, there's something beautiful about it, too." Blunt wrote and recorded the song without telling his father. According to an Event magazine interview, when Blunt played it for him in a room with just the two of them there, he responded, "That's the way it is.

I'd recommend watching everything James Blunt has ever done, it's all beautiful and so heartful. Personally, when I listen to this song, I can't help but think of my mother. She's always been the strongest person in our family, she and I have talked over the years about how we are always the two people that have to do the hard things so those we love don't have to. As kids, she literally chased monsters away from us. Shot a rabid dog that was killing our grandmother's chickens, fought off our abusive father multiple times. Fought and survived cancer, and raised 4 children as a single mother. All while supporting our Aunt who was raising our 5 cousins as a single mother, and even now that me and my siblings are adults with kids of our own, my mother still provides that sense of support and motherly love not only to us and her grandchildren, but to her coworkers, neighbors, and anyone she meets. I've always had the same personality as my mother, so we've always been each others' support person. We talk about hard things to get them off our chest, and we support each other when hard times bring us down. These last few years tho, more and more, I've been stepping into her shoes when it comes to supporting the family, both finically and emotionally. The first time I heard this song, it was right after my mother had a heart attack, and it broke me. "It's my turn to keep the monsters away" is really how I feel. Her heart and health problems could take her at any time, or she could very well live another 10-20 years. Either way, no matter how much I don't want to see her go, I'll be there for my family when she does. Honestly, I think being there to support my siblings when she passes, that sense of purpose, will be the only thing that gets me through the pain of it. However much time she may have, my mother deserves to rest easy during her last 10-20 years, even tho I know she won't, lol. She's a Scorpio after all. She'll give up her fire when the Lord pries it out of her hands, all the while she's scolding him for it, and I know we'll keep a light on for each other till we see each other again on the other side.

This is one of the most emotional songs there is but also comforting in away as everyone looses there farther or farther figure or someone as close as a parent figure can be to know your not alone in suffering and to reflect back on the memories you have and the love you still have in your heart that's where they will exist and be part of you sadly for james blunt the pain of loss would continue and yes he put his grief in to a song called the girl that never was very emotional song Tissues ready but take some time before viewing love your reactions Xx

His father as shown in the video was an army helicopter pilot, then James followed him into the army, and was in the first armoured vehicle that invaded Kosovo during the Pm Blair & President Clinton years. He now lives on the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean.

It is inspiring to see a connection of the generations. And seeing you folks, I feel a sense of time between granddaughter and grandmother. We have perhaps the last generation in the modern western world, our grand-parents, that have in their years seen such horrible events. If you know what I mean. When you are golden in age, events are filtered by that already lost. Sadly, you will be there. All the best. Cheers.

The amount of tissues this man has helped sell! He's got tissue stocks, I'm sure of it! James is a brilliant storyteller, a songwriter who shines brightest when he writes about things he's lived through, things he's experienced first hand. "No Bravery" is about what he saw in the Kosovo War in the 90s while serving with the British Army under NATO. "Carry You Home", also something he experienced. And his recent song "The Girl That Never Was". Tissues 💯 required. And for a happier song, check out "Bonfire Heart". For a song that he made the video to thank health workers during COVID, check out "The Greatest". I really hope you go down a James Blunt rabbit hole, it's a worthwhile experience!

James co-wrote the song along with Amy Wadge and Jimmy Hogarth. The inspiration for the song came from Jame's Dad who was dying from kidney failure and needed a transplant. It's certainly a tough listen!

Thank you for doing this song. It’s one of a few I always watch when I see someone new to me watch it. The emotion you showed, while emotional to me just watching, is so real and honest. I think it’s amazing because too many people hide emotions. They are scared or worried about showing them. Or worse they are faking emotions or reactions for clicks. Thank you for being honest, real and providing amazing content. ❤

James & his father were both officers (tank Commanders I believe) in the British military. I heard James donated all the proceeds from this amazing video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much wonderful work for ex-servicemen & women, and God bless him for that. 🙋‍♂ ❤
