Thanks Darlene. I’m confident that the algorithm will improve over time. I’m not at all sure of if this is photography or some other creative creation. The ethical implications are mind boggling. I sincerely your shepherding us through the process.

Thanks for the video. Good job! I've played around with Adobe's Photoshop Generative Fill and Firefly versions enough to start forming an opinion. I was stunned by Photoshop Generative Fill's ability to enlarge paintings I got off of Google to fill in the gaps for certain formats. I did some birthday posters using Firefly's illustration feature. So many style choices! I did one of two squirrels dancing in a party scene and it came out killer. Sometimes details in the illustrations were half baked but the overall creative design is amazing. I am glad Skylum is implementing this but I am afraid that Adobe's resources will give them a big edge. Their photo and illustration library I think, is simply far larger than Skylum could ever put together. When I use this AI, I deeply groan inside (this use to take me hours to do) but get giddy with the fun of using it.

I'm not convinced as yet. A lot of what I've generated don't look very realistic and I can get better results by downloading stock images and using layers to incorporate into my photos. I can also then move and re-size to suit the photo. More effort I know but more realistic. Love your videos!

Well yes it is. Those things both use existing actual images, possibly even the photographer's own. Generative tools create something out of thin air, it's not real and doesn't exist anywhere in real life. So yeah it's different.

I don't care about the should, I don't really use it to add things but I'm using the AI in PS to remove things on every pic almost. It's really useful.

Keep in mind if you use PS to do that as of November 1st they are on a credit system. Every time you hit Generate you use one credit and you have a limited number each month then they'll charge you more.

@@DigitalPhotoMentor I don't think my small amount of editing will come close to using up my credits. I saw the numbers somewhere and they didn't alarm me. Plus I read that there isn't a charge only a slow down on results. So no worries on that count.

Hi Darlene, Thank you for your detailed demonstration of the Luminar Neo GenSwap feature. After experimenting with it, I must say that my experience was underwhelming. It's becoming increasingly clear that Luminar seems to be focusing on adding plugins that, while innovative in concept, unfortunately fall short in execution when compared to more advanced software in the market. The GenSwap tool, in particular, lacks the sophistication and depth found in tools like those in Photoshop. Photoshop's advanced features, user-friendly interface, and comprehensive editing capabilities set a high standard in photo editing, a standard that GenSwap doesn't quite meet. This disparity is especially noticeable in complex editing scenarios where precision and a wide range of options are crucial. It's disappointing to see Luminar focusing on hyped features that ultimately don't deliver the expected performance or quality. As a user, I'm looking for reliable tools that can enhance my workflow, not second-rate plugins that only mirror the capabilities of existing, more refined software. While I appreciate the effort to innovate, I believe Luminar needs to focus more on quality and performance to truly compete in the highly competitive photo editing software market.

It looks like they are trying to play catchup to Photoshop, but this is far behind. I’m afraid Adobe has more resources for this kind of technology with AI, server farms, depth, number of images to train and draw from. Photoshop already allows enlarging borders and does a good job, provides multiple variations to choose from and more. I think the studio lighting and face lighting, eye and mouth enhancements are pretty good and easy to use. I don’t know what to think, if they should try to compete in the generative AI space or not.

personally the only downside of this is one, i had to rely on the Internet and two, the hit and miss of the results that i might end up spending more time than doing it myself. I can't see it's something that I'd be using much, perhaps if it's comes with the software I might try it once or twice if at all. but I can't see it much helpful for me to pay extra for it.

Thanks for highlighting the current shortcomings of AI. These manipulative processes are not for me. If people wish to use them to create artwork of their own, then I have no problem with that - but it's not photography. Let's make sure we can make an honest separation between reality and artificiality. I love your work - keep going, please.

How so? If you have the subscription you get everything. If you bought the lifetime license you just need the creative pass but it's optional you don't have to get it

You summed it up “subscription” - I bought Neo when it first came out - no subscription, brilliant I thought, what a nice change from Photoshop - and now they’re both doing it. Apple are continually upgrading IOS but I don’t have to pay a subscription for that. The whole subscription model bugs me and I won’t take part. @@DigitalPhotoMentor

Why would they put that in the catalog area instead of under "edit"? That's just weird. Plus it looks really clunky. I wouldn't pay to add that to my copy. PS works far better even if it isn't perfect.

Because it can't be used just as a tool, it makes a new TIF file - as do all the others you see in the catalog area. As for Photoshop being better, yes it is - but only marginally. I've had some super odd results with PS as well but they have the advantage of being ahead by about a year. So review Luminar Neo's again in a year to compare.

While Luminar GenSwap attempts to revolutionize photo editing with its AI-driven features, its downfall becomes apparent in the erosion of the artistry that comes with the human touch. The software, while powerful, often sacrifices the nuance and emotional depth that a human editor brings to the table. The risk of losing the essence and personal interpretation in favor of automated alterations can diminish the art form, ultimately distancing the connection between the creator and their craft.

My opinion.. it isn’t real. If you are going to use this I think it most definitely should be said. Photography to me is, getting a photo of what you see, with slight tweaking to enhance the photo, not putting in things that weren’t there! Is it cool? Yes, but as a photographer, it’s not real

AI is just another tool that has been added to an artist's toolbox. As long as the artist is not misrepresenting what their art is by calling it something that it is not, then it's just an evolution. Its no different about how painters felt about photography when it gained in popularity. It's also no different than the advent of PaintShop into the photographer's world. Certainly in the world of photojournalism, like PhotoShop before it, AI will be taboo. When AI starts being used for nefarious purposes, (as I'm pretty sure that somewhere it is), then regulatory agencies are going to have to keep up with things to ensure public safety and to prevent rampant fraud.

This seems a lot harder and time consuming than simply using a mask of the type object wanted. When you finally get an object you want it is frequently so cartoonish it's worthless.

Just another tool to further corrupt the art of photography. It should have to add a watermark that stated the image is no longer a photograph. I suspect many digital creators who would use these tools lack the integrity to note they did not create the image on their own but had AI create part of the image.

Please clarify your comment. RIp off is pretty accusatory. Luminar Neo is still one of the least expensive photo editing software and suites on the market and for what it does, and who it's for - it does it very well. So which part is a rip off in your opinion?
