Jim I am well impressed with this in depth tutorial. What I did was loaded a normal photograph into Neo then saved 5 different exposure settings of the same photograph. I then dragged all 5 into the HDR merge and followed your video to produce an amazing result. One again Jim your knowledge on this program is very valuable to the community who follow you and each time I watch a deep dive or normal tutorial I improve my knowledge to produce wonderful results.

Thanks for the courage of showing your early experiences with HDR editing. I'm not sure I could every show my first attempts!! LOL. Adding HDR Merge to Neo is the best thing Skylum has done yet. I wasn't using Aurora much any more even though I loved the result I would get. Now that they are combined...well...Welcome back brackets!!!!

Great story about meeting Trey Ratcliff, and how you got into HDR photography. I was lucky enough to meet Trey at one his photo-walks on the east coast, and be introduced to HDR photography also changed my life as well. I have the HDR Merge plug-in already installed and edit my first photo. It works great, and I love it. Thanks for sharing all this important information about it.

Jim, you weren't kidding. This is a great way to introduce the HDR with Neo. I also remember making clown vomit early on. I really like the way of integration the new HDR component makes the control of Neo so impactful. Thank you for all the videos you do. They are a great help.

If you own NEO and Aurora 2019 all you have to do is click the Extension Icon to install the HDR Merge extension. It is FREE if you own both apps! Takes 10 seconds. When you install the extension there are other blurred out extensions indicating this is the new Skylum business model - sell extensions for NEO. With Dodge and Burn it is recommended to do this on a duplicate layer in the Luminance blend mode. Otherwise, you will have noticeable color shifts. This appears to be a bug - the D/B tool seems to apply in Color Burn blend mode.

Finally Aurora and Luminar together! I've been wanting this forever. Going between the two always seemed redundant. Now if we can get a mobile app that would be the icing on the cake. BTW I have a few of those "clown vomit" photos as well. Thanks Jim for the great info. I see skyline is doing a second trip to Iceland. I wish I could go again but health issues stop me from doing so. Have a great time and take some amazing photos.

Jim I've loved HDR since the beginning and you're tutorials, The truck was a awesome Look. And I've over Baked a lot of HDR's, but it's Art, I am so excited with this new NEO and HDR, so redid 2 photo's yesterday that I wasn't happy with, with to much noise, 5 exposure with Topaz DeNoise each frame then NEO HDR and came out Fantastic, from my Mavic 2 pro drone in Houston. Thanks for all you do and have been following Trey for years, But you are the Best. Thanks so much.

Hi Jim, great video of HDR Merge. I am a user of Lightroom Classic and have just started using Luminar Neo (had Luminar 4). I must say, the latest version of Luminar Neo has been me consider it as the go to instead of Lightroom. Each has their merits, but the ease of AI masking is definitely a game changer for me. G'day Jim. I thought you had been a serious photographer for longer than you said. 2009? Looks like you missed out on all the manual camera, darkroom stuff I laboured through. I remember dodging & burning by waving circles of cardboard on wooden skewers under the enlarger! MUCH better these days. Trey Ratcliffe is the bloke who enticed to buy the camera & lens he was raving about - Nikon D800 & the 14-24mm big glass wide - just before he switched entirely to Sony. Trey moved to NZ some years ago. Cheers.

Hi Jim - just for your information; I've installed the 1.2.0 update. And as I have also a license of Aurora HDR, Skylum knew and has auto-enabled the HDR Merge extension, which I could activate in a matter of seconds by simply clicking the install button. thanks for the tutorial, so so easy when some one shows you how to do it. I loaded images into the box provided click a single image came up but i expected all the sliders from Aurora to become visible, so i tried again and again and gave up. i watched a few seconds of you video could not see the dog but the lights in my head came on and off i went thanks again.

Jim, thanks for your interesting story; one that a lot of us can certainly relate to. Unfortunately, back in 2009 you weren’t blessed with the tech advances we have today so your learning curve had to be long and hard; something that most of us would have given up on long ago. Kudos to you for your patience in finally learning the ropes. As for the rest of us, we’ve benefited greatly from the improved camera features and software, as well as the tutorials like yours which have drastically shorten our own learning curves. Thanks Jim for this. Loved the 2009 recollection and those cringe worthy HDRs. HDR has come on so far now and it's so much better having it incorporated in a program like NEO. Installed my update this evening without problem. Asked to install 1.2 as soon as I opened NEO. Need to get some bracketed images now to give it a go.

Let me guess--the tool of choice back then for your "clown vomit" was probably Photomatix, right? Trey promoted that heavily back then and I used it for a long time. Then Aurora came along and took the HDR crown instantly. But I can see how editing the HDR in Neo is so much easier and more powerful than in the old Aurora interface.

I wonder how it compares to Aurora. Neo & Aurora are both Skylum products, and Aurora has a good reputation.

I like the results I get, very much. It seems that the tonemapping result is the same or at least similar to Aurora HDR, but having it inside of Neo gives you more options for filters and masks, etc.

Thanks Paul and I have not done focus stacking in the past, but if I were to do it today I would just do it in On1. But I believe Helicon Focus is a well known tool for that, though I have never tried it.

We have reached version 1.2 of Luminar Neo, a program that since version 1.05 has a huge bug. After cropping a photo proportionally with, for example, the original dimensions of 5184x3456, when we finish editing if we export indicating that we want the original dimensions, Neo simply ignores the instruction and keeps the dimensions after the crop. As I mentioned the problem only arises I think in version 1.05 (or 1.06 I'm not sure anymore). And no one at Skylum detects the bug. As long as it persists, the acquisition is not justified.

G'day Jim I have my neo hdr, loaded and installed on my laptop. Can't wait to give it a try. I believe that this amazing programme has the ability to do hdr on a single RAW photo. I am absolutely amazed that the courage and fortitude of the Skylum team to bring us all of these incredible updates while under the horrific threat of the invading Russian's troops. I know that I speak for the whole free world, in wishing for the ultimate victory for the Ukraine's people and government in their fight with Russia! Havagooday mate Greg

Upgraded to Neo 1.2.0 and installed the Fusion HDR plugins. Tried merging couple of brackets set. I'm rediscovering Aurora HDR style of merge :) with much simpler control IMHO in the comfort of Neo GUI. Two observations. On Windows, I can't seem to drag multiple images onto the HDR Merge box like you do on MAC :(. And the fusion processing does not make use of GPU as all other Skylum processing, so HDR is a bit slow on my laptop but all and all, I am liking it. Thank you for sharing your video.

Yes sir Jim, “clown vomit” did indeed give HDR images a bad name back then. But, hey, wasn’t playin around with clown vomit a great way to learn? Really enjoyed this video and your personal history story at the beginning. I think you know that I preordered HDR Merge, which is supposed to be available for me to download and install sometime today. I’m almost certain that my first attempts at making HDR images were probably CV too! 😎😂😂😎

Hey Jim. Great video as always. Question. How do you do HDR on a single image (no brackets)? Can't seem to figure that out. When I click 'merge' the image looks the same.

Thanks Tim! I have done a lot of single exposure HDR Merge images and it's working fine. The image looks adjusted, too. It should open up the HDR Merge folder after the "Merge" button is pressed and it is finished processing. Then you can open in Edit and have a go at it. If it is not working, perhaps email their support team. I have a video coming soon on single image HDR and the results I am getting.

I like the video Jim , and it made me look at an old bracket set as well. What I think may be a problem with HDR merge is that in Neo (and also in Aurora) it is not accurate if there is ghosting caused by (in my example) tree branches and leaves against the sky behind. Even using the highest anti ghosting setting and auto align. the leaves show with ghosts. Photomatix pro 6 , which is quite old now, is more complex to use, but it will produce a perfect blend from this bracket set. The difference in Photomatix is that you can mark the areas where they may be ghostinfg before creating the HDR. This bracket set was hand held so obviously is more of a challenge for HDR software.

Have tried again and I had not realised the importance of selecting a reference image from one of the brackets,, Doing that and then selecting the highest anti ghost option seems to create a good HDR

I read in a facebook group the suggestion that HDR Merging from TIFF files is better than merging from DNG files. Unfortunately, I don't see how to send you a screenshot but a quick and dirty evaluation seems to support this idea. I took pictures set to DNG and made the first merge, saving the file as a high res TIFF. As a comparison I first converted the original DNG files to TIFF and repeated the exercise. In doing so I accidentally created a final lower resolution file ( 6.1MB compared with 141.9). Despite this the images made from TIFF files was noticeably cleaner especially when magnified. I realise that this is a weak scientific process but, if you have spare time, you might want to try this exercise or ..you may have a view on this already ..Best Regards

Hi Les and that is interesting. I have not tried it, but haven't had a reason to I guess. What I mean is that my merged HDR files, based on the raw files, look great to me. But I may compare to TIFF and see at some point. I wonder what the technical reason for this may be? Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Jim, Thanks for an interesting and informative post. I use Neo as a Lightroom CC plugin. I upgraded Neo and installed HDR Merge. As a Neo stand-alone I can use the HDR Merge no problem. However when I use the updated Neo as a Lightroom CC plugin then the HDR Merge is not available. Is HDR Merge not available when using Neo as a Lightroom CC plugin?

Hi Jay and thanks. Presets for Neo can be added via File>Add Luminar Neo Preset Collection. They will install in the Preset tab along the top menu. Just click on the section entitled Purchased and they should be there. Enjoy!

My first HDR pictures were taken in july 2005 using a Canon G2, just want to try them in Neo, but at the moment in the UK at 14:30 GMT there is still no sign of it.

I downloaded HDR Merge this morning and noticed space on the download page for more extensions in the future. Very excited to give HDR Merge a try (I had Aurora 2019 so no cost to me.) Also excited by the future with more extensions coming. Looks like my decision to go to Skylum starting with Luminar 2018 is finally paying off.

Hey Jim, Great video just like all your others. Couple questions. 1. I assume you can't utilize the HDR option if you are using Neo as a plugin to Lightroom? 2. What are you using these days for a DAM? 3. I was wondering how you are finding the stability/speed of the NEO library itself? Honestly I have used Lightroom for this purpose and would really like to do away with Lightroom. I really don't use LR for much else. 4. Would be great to see how you manage your files/flow in a video. I think Skylum is finally settling into a groove with NEO that they can build upon rather than the perverbial 'reinventing the wheel each year and renaming' They seriously have the potential to be a huge influence vs other software.

Hi Jim. Can you explain how HDR Merge works with just 1 image? I mean, what does it actually do since there are no other images to work with? Could the same result be achieved with one image using other tools in Neo without the HDR Merge tool?

Hi John, even with a single image you are still doing the tonemapping which does a great job balancing the light. So it is not a true HDR merge, but the tonemapping can really help. And it isn't exactly the same result using other tools in Neo. I have a video on this coming soon. Thanks!

I pre-ordered over a week ago, but did not get the HDR extension or the1.2 update today - July 28. My receipt states that they will send me an email on how to download the HDR extension. I have not received an email either. I checked for updates several times today and the dialogue claims that I have the latest version 1.1.1 Has the release been delayed?

Luminar advised me today that single photo HDR only works through their catalog. It does not work as LR plugin.

Does HDR Merge only work if you load Neo as a standalone and bring the images in? When I try to export an image from Photoshop into Neo I dont see HDR Merge as an option. Maybe I missed that in your discussion

Hi there and that will not work. I have tried adjusting some images but when I drag them to the HDR Merge window, what shows up is the original file. So the only way to do this would be to pre-edit, then export, re-import, and merge those. Seems like a lot of effort to me.

You can export a photo to save it outside of Neo, or if you are using their catalog the edit is saved there in the database and your edit is accessible whenever you are in Neo.

Need some help. When I try to import bracketed photos from LR to Neo the catalog tab is not shown or the option to add bracketed photos. I can import a single photo into Neo from LR and back into LR.. I have Neo 1.2 with HDR Merge. I have never used the catalog or set it up in Neo. I use LR for that. I was able to make a file of bracketed photos and put it on my desktop. I was then able to import into Neo directly without opening LR. I would like to import directly into Neo bracketed photos from LR. Thanks

Hi Gary, dodge and burn comes in a free update to 1.2.0, but HDR Merge is only free if you either already have Neo and Aurora HDR 2019, or if you have a subscription license to Neo. Otherwise you have to pay to get the extension. Thanks.

Hi Mike and HDR Merge is an optional extension. It is free if you have Neo and own Aurora HDR 2019, or if you are a Neo subscription license customer. Otherwise it is paid. Check in your Skylum account on their website. Thanks!

@@JimNix that's a great point. Support team never answered back while I was struggling with some real estate photography in HDR. It takes the pictures and the final result is a bunch of shiny colors but not a picture at all. I tried to reach the support team and never answered back like now when I asked them to cancel my purchase from this HDR merge I already did and no answer at all.

Hey Jim, I have a malware warning from using the aurora hdr and now the aurora neo hdr program and plug in. I am working with Skylum to see if they can track it down, Panasonic Cameras, raw adobe conversion tool, and aurora hdr and now aurora neo with hdr merge, Comodo anti-virus, Windows 10 and AMD machine. I might be the only one with this system configuration, but right now, folks with similar work flows should steer clear.

@@JimNix Their support has been most helpful. The hope was swapping out the aurora hdr for aurora hdr merge would solve the problem, but no love. My guess is it has something to do with the way adobe processes raw to dng with Panasonic cameras, GH6 specifically that somehow shows up as neo malware. Learning a lot from your videos btw. Hi Jim. I've updated my Luminar Neo today and installed the HDR Merge plug in. I have Aurora 2019. I can drag images, over to the plug in on the right. I get the spinning icon to say that it's working but when it finishes, there is no image anywhere. Neo does not create an HDR Merge folder and if I create one myself, no merged photos go into the folder. Have you got any idea what I'm doing wrong, cos I'm at a complete loss. I'm on pc by the way :)

Hi Ivan and sounds odd. I assume once you drop the images in the HDR Merge window, you are clicking on the Merge button too, yes? I know, very basic question, but just making sure. @@JimNix Hi Jim. I purchased Neo with 2 seats so installed on my lappy today and it's working fine on there. Still not working on my main pc though (which I use 90% of the time). The only thing I can think of is I installed it, not realising aurora was in trial mode and hadn't been activated. Even after activation HDR Merge is still not working. On my lappy, I made sure I activated Aurora first and everything worked fine......

Haha Norma yeah I probably liked them, but I was also blown away with what I could make a photo look like (even if it was ugly, which it was). Having no photo experience, I just was having fun more than anything. But yeah, I thought it looked cool. Obviously now I cringe looking back at it, but hey you gotta start somewhere right?

Thank you for showing me some of the controls. With all due respect, you are still way over the top with your adjustments. PhotoShop instructors I know would tone that down by 75%, although I know the tendency now is for oversaturation or undersaturation of everything, so perhaps toning down by 50% would be enough.

Ha, yeah I do like my color, and freely admit that. But of course it's super easy to reduce saturation and vibrance in any app, including in Luminar. This is just to my personal taste, but I like them a little edgy. To each his own and all that. Thanks for watching.
