Your dive watch doesn't have to weigh 6 ounces to be rugged. Luminox stands as an example. Most of their watches featuring carbon fiber cases will feature military toughness, durability, and water resistance. Tested for over year prior to this review, I proved it myself in SCUBA diving and other TNP activities. Featured in the review will be the xlnt "Black Ops" and Orange Luminox Divers [8809, 8802 Luminox Divers]. We'll look at their good looks, high legibility, SAWC, value, and you'll see them in dive operations. Very
recommended.
Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 4 out of 5
Current selection of the xlnt Luminox Military Watches: shrsl.com/205ga
Also watch my Isobrite Tritium watch review, they have much brighter T100 tritium tubes and dominate Luminox in terms of brightness, very recommend:

If Navy Seals are using watches they're probably wearing a Marathon or a G-Shock. I own multiple G-Shocks and they're my absolute favorite, with an honorable mention to the Timex Ironman series. Those things can take a beating as well for how little they cost.

Dude G-shock are like wearing a clunky wall clock on your wrist. I'm highly liking my Luminox so far. I don't understand the hatred for the brand. I think it's mostly butt hurt G-shock fan boys that are offended by someone else making a similar style watch.

@@jamisgood21 imho the criticism towards luminox is the price/function/value. indeed, the size of some gshocks almost defeat the purpose but i'd go with a solar digital watch with illumination at will.

@@jamisgood21 I'll tell you why I hate the pieces of trash. They don't last. I owned one and it died 2 years after I bought it. It is a piece of overpriced garbage. Picked up a Casio G-Shock Mudmaster to replace it and it is fantastic. Its solar and radio. I'm a railroader and am required to have a time piece at work. I climb on cars and locomotives and am always banging my watch against stuff. I slipped and fell on the ballast once and smacked that Casio hard on the ground. Still ticking. That Luminox is a toy. I've now owned that Casio for years and it has never failed me. Being a radio watch it also keeps perfect time.

*Over $300 and no freaking alarm or stop watch function???* *Most of those expensive watches claimed they are used by military and spec ops guys but each time you see a soldier in real life he's sporting a Casio.*
@sh0183
@sh0183 6 жыл бұрын
JoeDurobot well yes I agree they are quite expensive, but to try to justify your opinions of being overpriced by saying they don't have a "freaking alarm or stop watch function" makes no sense. Your reasoning and logic is flawed: this is a dive watch and should be treated as such. A quartz movement traditional, non-digital dive watch cannot have those functions. Those would be of the functions of something such as a Casio g-shock. I do agree they are overpriced and are controversial as I have seen about as many good reviews as bad, but your justification should be of a g-shock instead. A g-shock serves a completely different POU than a dive watch, at least as what luminox markets these as.

Finally. I just bought my wife one for nursing. Navy Seal white version. Great watch. The battery did die about 5 months after we bought it. It was probably old so we will see how long the new one lasts. BTW if you buy off Amazon be careful you don't know how old the lamps are. I just went to a dealer.

I have a Luminox watch and it's the least durable watch I've ever owned. I took it to Afghanistan as a journalist and it worked for most of my embed...until I wore it in the shower. It quickly fogged up and quit working. I sent to Luminox for repairs and they told me to not take it in the shower, don't subject it to temperature extremes and don't wear it around any strong odors. Seriously. So ok, I have a supposed military grade watch that I should avoid getting wet, can only wear indoors in conditioned spaces and avoid anyone with copious amounts of perfume. NOPE.
@youtubeuser3357
@youtubeuser3357 3 жыл бұрын
Stop lying. They didn't say you can't get it wet. They said don't wear it in the shower. The same goes for the most expensive 300m dive watches. NO watches are waterproof, nor are any watches, ANY, waterproof or very water resistant in the shower. Showers are a unique environment with jets of water, micro-droplets of water mist, a heated up watch, and dynamic temperature changes. Sure, a person can have anecdotal experiences of a previous watch never failing in the shower, but that doesn't mean it was safe, and it doesn't mean that water never entered the watch, and it doesn't mean that water would never enter the watch. Stop wearing your watches in the shower.

My experience with Luminox: used both as a soldier and DOD contractor, probably the worst watch I've owned. Strap broke within first 6 months of use (Luminox said it was not covered by warrant...and it costs $50). After 1 year one of the tritium dials came unglued and sometime in between the glass cracked. Used by operators? In my time I saw only one Army EOD Officer wearing one. Everyone else wears Casio G-Shock and/or Suunto...or Timex, etc. But this is only my experience. Never again will I buy a Luminox watch.

Seems about right. I will say his expensive, actual mil-issue Trintec (Marathon?) watch he got back in the nineties had the same issue. Tritium tubes came free and caused a racket. Isn't the most-common watch in .mil the little Casio FW-160? I swear I looked it up once upon a time and found someone who pulled some sales records of the most popular sales with an NSN. Maybe I need to find that. I can def. say that luminox ain't exactly the dominant share in the field. -Doodle

The band sucks. Mine broke after about 9 months. Never worn in the shower. As far as durability, outside of the band it has been great. I am a railroader and am always climbing on cars and bashing it into things. I love that it is very simple and keeps accurate time. Brake tests and speed checks are much easier with this watch because it is minimalist. Just my experience.

Love the Luminox watches. Years ago, I picked up a stainless field chrono with beautiful blue face. Mineral crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. A big watch that got noticed. It's old now and the gas lamps have dimmed. I wonder if I can send it in to Luminox to get the lamps replaced? When they were new, if I woke up at night, it was so bright I could use it to light the way to the bathroom. You mentioned the Sunto dive computer, are you going to review any smartwatches? Lately, I've been rockin' the Garmin Fenix 3, OG model without heartrate monitor. I don't use a tenth of it's features, but it looks great.

Bought the original Navy SEAL 3001 model a few years back from REI and had to return it due to the lens fogging up after going swimming with it. Mind you I only went swimming and never even used it as a dive watch. Damn thing was nearly $400.00 US dollars and wasn't even able to handle a depth of a swimming pool much less out in the open ocean. Too bad cause I liked the way it looked and how light weight it was as well. Purchased a SUUNTO dive watch after and never looked back.

Nice review, I own the Series 3180 a chronograph (its black face with blue trim). It is OK, I have had it for 4 years. It burns batteries faster than my G shock or Seiko, the chronograph falls off center about twice a year and one of my luminous spots fell off and rattled around until I sent in to be repaired. One more challenge is the fact that only one place is certified to service it. On a plus side when I sent it in to re-attache the luminous spot that fell off inside they fixed for free and dropped in a new battery, it was gone for 4 weeks. Just my experience, with it, I would buy a basic one again but not a chronograph or a super expensive one. Keep pumping out the reviews Nutn - long time fan! (More KRV please)

Sellita Movement SW-220 with day/date complicaton. Great watch. I love Luminox. I'm on my second Luminox. They get condensation inside of them below -25 degrees Celsius. The rubber band cannot stand big variations (from +10 degrees to -16 degrees) over a short time span. Then they get fragile. It is rubber and it is the nature of rubber. Luckily you can get new bands on ebay and amazon. Wearing a NATO-strap now and it seems unbreakable. I love it though!

The XL.8895 Black Ops has a Sapphire Crystal. Last week 5could have bought one for $135. They don't throw on a sales tax, I'm not sure why. That was with a 15% promo code. 45mm, 515 Ronda, double gasket crown which is why you don't need a screw down crown. As the deeper you dive, the pressure gets heavier and presses the gaskets tighter so it doesn't leak. Quartz movements are way more accurate. I hate resetting my Seiko automatics all the time even though they are very accurate for an automatic(4R36), they still are off 8 or 9 seconds a day compared to the quartz which isn't off that much a month. I'd like to see a Precidrive in one of these. They guarantee +/- 10 seconds a year. That's right, a YEAR! Those movements utilize thermo compensation and like 27 jewels to do the that. I had a great Certina that I loved but I sold it. Not near as light however. Great video man. Best I've seen about Luminox. Thanks. You really know your business.

Several years ago, I asked my girlfriend for a Luminox watch. She got me a cheap copy. Now, after five batteries, it still works, but the bezel has all the number worn off. A guy I worked with had the real thing. It still looks brand new.

Go for an Isobrite T100. Great watch, I recommend an Isobrite or Armourlite watch over Luminox any day.

luminox makes awesome watches, Ive had the original seal dive watch since 98-99 and loved that watch and has been thru a lot. I just recently replaced it with the Atacama 1927 and love it. replaced the dive watch because the bezel cracked off and got lost and it was time for a new one. Once you go tritium you cant go back. Please nutn more luminox reviews. keep up the good work.

I’ve owned 5 luminox watches in the army. It’s an ok Watch. An ok..... watch. I’ve moved and went to the Garmin Tactix Bravo. I get way more out of the garmin then I do with the luminox. I have abused my tactix and still running harder then the luminox. Nothing against them. It is a decent watch. I would put the luminox on the diver side watch. But far as of the older luminox watches, I heard they are way better then the newer ones. But great review

Mineral crystal is better for diving because of its increased shatter resistance versus sapphire. Downside is that sapphire has greater clarity.

Bought mine at Tourneau. Shortly after purchase I noticed that the hands didn't line up perfectly at 12:00. Customer service was excellent. They returned it to the manufacturer for repair.

I have the 8802 (grey one) and it's pretty cool. I hated it at first, yet now its a solid player in my embarrassing watch rotation. Hasn't let me down yet and its super accurate, lightweight and cool looking. Took me a bit to trust the lack of a screw down crown, but by now it has to have a good 20+ hours of swimming and snorkeling on it with no problems. I think it's the John Rayburn watch from the series Bloodline, or its very very similar. I have a matte black metal bracelet for it as well that looks killer but must say I prefer the stock rubber strap for functionality and comfort. This has basically become my beater watch despite paying near $200 CAD for it, more because its just so resistant to scuffing and scratching. Not my favorite watch by any stretch yet finds itself on my wrist regularly while other seemingly more legit watches ride the pine. Edit: should add how consistant and awesome the lume is, not super bright but always there.

I bought a Luminox that died 2 years and 2 months after I bought it. Jeweler said the watch movement was fried. The cost to repair was 80 bucks and Luminox said it was 2 months out of warrantee. Total garbage watch. Don't waste your money. Replaced with a G-Shock Mudmaster. Solar and a radio watch. Fantastic.

UPDATE: Bought the orange Luminox 3059 after this review 4 years ago. I don't intentionally abuse it, but I wear it shooting, hiking, fishing, kayak/canoe, camping trips...where it got put through the paces. At work it's been covered in grease, hot oil, chemicals. As of today, it functions perfectly. Strap still in good condition, though I did just replace my father-in-law's Sentry strap ($50) after several years hard use. The tritium tubes have yet to diminish in brightness intensity. Crystal is clear & scratch free, though I do use screen protector, changed a few times. I usually end up wearing the Luminox over my G-Shocks...2nd cool. Thanks NutN!

Read the comments here before even thinking about it... They are pretty much acknowledged as the most overpriced piece of shit watch on the market... My advice is get a G-Shock.. or if you want to keep it classy, Get an Automatic Seiko Diver like the SKX007 or the MINI Prospex Turtle.
