When I was luckily enough to review the Bear Grylls LUMINOX watch loaned from Watcho.co.uk
I had quite already built up a conclusion what to expect, but these conclusions were from others, and for me to really make a solid choice then it has to be hands on.
In my review I was so impressed that I said I would get one... well todays the day, and I've nailed a cracker. It's used, as the model I wanted is no longer available, and to add it didn't come with the original box.
There's no time stamps in this video, as it's like a story, and the way i've filmed it, it's a journey that'll see you to the end.
Whether you like my LUMINOX or not, opinions are very welcome on this channel... cheers :)

I'm just an amateur, but my passion drives me... I would love to have more time to really make it super polished, but feel it's nice to have that side of amateur, as it does make it more realistic with warmth... sometimes watching a highly professional channel makes it feel more surface content, instead of hearing the enthusiasm in the voice... am really enjoying my first LUMINOX especially at night :) Thanks for your feedback and support... I had a Luminox Navy SEAL Colormark chronograph. I sold it a few months back. The Good: The Ronda 5030-D movement was very, very accurate; +5 seconds in 3 months!; the case was really well made; bezel snapped and locked really well; dial was very legible; hands were bright and lined up with markers well; pushers were tight and had a snap to them; NATO straps easily installed and look great. The Bad: Still using the Navy SEAL logo on the back when no Navy SEALs actually wear them; crystal had no protection and scratched easily; with my old eyes I couldn’t see the sub-dials without glasses, which made the chronograph function almost useless for me; it isn’t a good replacement for a G-Shock. I don’t think I’d buy one again. You can get a way tougher and more functional watch for your money with a G-Shock. 👍🏻

Cheers for sharing my friend... I can't imagine what a watch would be useful for while under fire??? In certain conditions I don't wear a watch, simply because it'll probably rip my wrist off LML :-P Chronographs are usually always small printed, many are just showing off rather than being practical... I use them just to gather an idea how much time has lapsed, than to use it as a fine stopwatch piece of gear... if I want more detail, then a digital stopwatch wins :) This LUMINOX I have bought myself is more me, has what I need and of course has enough lume to last many nights.. I mainly wear this at night, or when I need a less bulky watch that can be used in any condition. As for value, it's more to what it offers to you, as a Swiss BOLEX watch with time and date costs around 6k, while a G-Shock can multitask many features and display multiple pieces of information for a fraction of the price, and that BOLEX is just made up of steel and dinosaur parts LML :-P Cheers for your experiences and your opinions, these comments are always a welcome, as I like the open conversations, and not the ones that pussy around not being direct, as it gives those who are interested the whole story :))

Awesome video, always entertaining. I'll have to check out a Luminox sometime. One minor nitpick about the Tritium lume. It won't (or shouldn't) have the same brightness over the next few decades, as it will constantly be getting ever so dimmer. In about 12.5 years it will be half as bright, and another halflife it will be 1/4 as bright as it started out. Even with that in mind, for a military or survival watch, it's an ideal solution.
@patricko9170
@patricko9170 3 жыл бұрын
From personal experience that 12.5 year figure is highly conservative. If the tritium tubes are newish when they go into the watch then in my experience they last about 20 years before noticeably fading.
@patricko9170
@patricko9170 3 жыл бұрын
@Sigkim It depends upon how long those tubes sit in storage and when they are manufactured. If your sights were tritium they could have sat for many years before being used as a sight. The same is true for watches, if a company used 10 year old tubes then it obviously would have a shorter life-span. MB Microtech mamufactures most tubes. Traser watches are directly associated with MB Microtech. I would think you would have the newest tubes used in their own brand. So for longivity I would choose Traser.

I'm supper hooked on LUMINOX at the moment, am not into all the models, so finding this one really needed to hit all my needs, and it didn't disappoint... but looks way better in life, and again, so comfortable... the rubber strap doesn't pull hairs or make you puffy, so a huge point there :) With it being an older model which was released in 2011, the tritium is still very strong, and in the darkness glows on near objects. I really don't know much about this half life, but at the moment it swims with lume, and with regular lume this fades with time, as I have many vintage watches from the 90's with the lume very weak... so lets chat about this in say 10yrs with an update to how it's lasting :)) It's a very tight and tough watch, just what I need, and the carbon composite wins for me, as it's lighter than titanium and stronger than stainless steel... yeah, it looks like plastic on a quick glance, but going deeper, you can see it's something beyond that... and the model I have is very affordable too, so really makes it a winner for me... I bought it for the lume and toughness, and it exceeds it... plus it looks the business :)) Cheers for your support my friend, and was great hearing you again the other day... your voice is amazing, you are the Morgan Freeman for the watch voices :)) HaPpY weekend!

Great review of an older Luminox model. The one thing to keep in mind if considering the model for survival situations is that the Ronda quartz movement in this watch does not have an end-of-life indicator. It is a good 1-jeweled movement, but as you say it isn't anything expensive. I have the GMT model and it does not have an EOL indicator either. I am thinking about upgrading the movement to a 7-jeweled version with the indicator. It annoys me greatly when a watch just stops without warning. I think this one takes a 371 battery IIRC and it is nearing what they consider "high-torque" status. I wonder if the ETA F06.111 could be used here? If so that would be a great combination. It is a true high-torque movement with EOL, is more anti-magnetic, and has a much longer battery life. Keep up the good work!
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 3 жыл бұрын
ETA F06.111 can be had for £30, and sounds like a good option :) My friend, you are really knowledgeable and love the level of detail you extend too... now I'm wondering if the HH6 movement has the double tick for a low battery. I feel 3yrs would be about right, and the previous owner had it done prior to selling it to me. The 8821 was released in 2011 and how long the production ran for I don't know, but this one I have looks like it's about 10yrs old, but despite the few marks, it's looking good still. Really appreciate the feedback my friend and all your details to add, really helps with the channel and helps other no end... cheers :)

@@WatchUP69MrRangeman I am glad you are enjoying this model. Unfortunately the Ronda 515.HH6 and the GMT version Ronda 515.24 (the one I own) lack the double tick (EOL indicator). I was able to get about 5 years out of the battery before mine just died with no warning. The battery was replaced recently by myself, so I expect another ~5 years of service. If/when my 515.24H dies I will upgrade it to a higher quality quartz with the double tick (EOL indicator) since it sucks when a watch just quits working without warning on the wrist. I look forward to your next review! Take care.

@@patricko9170 5yrs, now that's excellent, and for the price of the battery, worth replacing at 4yrs to be safe... did you replace the gasket when you replaced the battery? With regards to using the ETA movement will need to have the correct size and height on the hand shafts, and if you look on the RONDA website you can find all the blueprints to their movements, wonder if ETA share such data on theirs??? Cheers buddy :))
@patricko9170
@patricko9170 3 жыл бұрын
@@WatchUP69MrRangeman The gasket was still in excellent condition. I just lightly greased it and then re-installed. ETA does offer that data. Marathon uses the F06.111 in their tritium Navigator and TSAR series, so you can use high hand stacking to account for the tubes. I would make double sure, but it could be done with some minor modifications. Also, do yourself a big favor and have a look at Traser and Armourlite watches if Marathons are out of the question. If you can swing it the Marathon TSAR is probably one of the absolute toughest watches you can buy in those price ranges.

@@patricko9170 Cheers buddy... I have a very good friend who's a watch maker (have a few videos labeled 'Fly on the Wall' and he's amazing with this side. I've only recently discovered Traser watches, and have know Marathon for a while... I need to look more into Traser, but for Marathon, the name reminds me of a chocolate bar, which is annoying as their watches do look great... I'm also into the original MWC watches, and reviewed quite an unusual ani-digi which is still in my collection, but really like their style. For me it needs to be a good price, and don't mind spending a little more to get the features I need, but there's a cutoff point that simple makes the watch more about the branding, than actually being a watch to be used in harsh conditions. I'm a massive G-Shock guy, but sometimes I need that analog side and the lume, and gas tubes are really hitting me at the moment, as nothing needs to be pushed or stirred in sunshine :) Btw, just seen your reply to Relative Time with regards to the half life of tritium gas tubes, and I know my LUMINOX is from 2011 and the brightness is still glowing strong... anyway, cheers once again, you've been amazing with your expertise :))

I have the recon but not sure given there is no screw down crown how it is also a 200 metre water resistant watch..im nervous to go swimming with it anyone help.
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 2 жыл бұрын
Being absolutely honest, screw down case backs if not done correctly, will fail. The screw down case back tightens and if the gasket hasn't enough silicon, it'll stretch and disfigure the gasket, which will fail... Best screw down is from the Vostok side, these don't turn against the gasket... so with regards to a back plate with screws, you'll have pressure down fixed using the four corner screws, so no turning or twisting the gasket, will still need silicon, as this prelong's the gasket from drying out. Remember mostly all G-Shocks are with plates, and these are 200m water resistant... the RECON also uses a double seal on the crown... The RECON isn't diver rated, but swimming is good, really it's an all day water activity watch :) If the battery has been replaced and isn't original, then check the gasket, replace if needed, and get it pressure tested if you want that security :)

It won't glow constantly at the same level for 25 years, the Tritium in the bulbs has a half life of about 12 years so it will only be half what it was when new after 12 years and then half that after another 12. It's all academic though as it won't last long enough to test it anyway.
@WatchUP69MrRangeman
@WatchUP69MrRangeman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy... I've had a few interesting conversations about this half life, and it seems misinformation is at fault to what the 25yrs really does mean, especially on our eyes. My buddy at Watch Crazy and Relative Time have made videos about this, and I thought the same as you, but it's not... put it this way, I don't think I'll be alive to see fade in an obvious way, unless it leaks??? I've got many vintage watches that have no lume left, and some are dated from the 80's, so when did they lose their lume??? I'm really on the fence about the tritium as it's like how long will a MIP display last for, until it reaches the end years it's a test in real life I guess. If you have some links to share, please do, as it's always good to get the facts right. Cheers buddy :))

I know these RECONS are going up in price, but if patient, you could find one around the £150... is there better watches, well it's all down to how you use it, but to have a solid watch that does what you need is by far the most important, and being it's carbon composite it doesn't clang like steel in tight spaces. I still wear it, mostly every night, now with evenings growing darker earlier, this will get to be the most worn, even more than my current GG-B100! Cheers :)

So keeping it realistic without being a show-off, the RECON is really the one that's about your needs... it's not a series you buy to impress those watchsheeps on TGV, this is a watch that's for those who know, it's certainly an elite side only, and bought to be used... I feel because it's fibre composite, it's that, that gives it a bad press, but those bad press it are all warped into micro-brands and have never laid eyes on one... also there's a few fakes out there, and I feel it's these that land on the wrong channels that give it the worse ride... The RECON would suit you, you'll see it as a proper outdoor watch, and it doesn't have a fancy Grylls logo on it... Never Give Up, well that's what the advert to the new GWG-2k mentions at the end, is their no originality anymore, so needs a Recon :-P A few other models from LUMINOX look a little fussy, or are playing with fire trying to make it look similar to other Swiss brands, but when they get it to their own, they can't be mistaken... another brand I enjoy is Victorinox, the one I have is very solid like my RECON and the finish is again tight, and it uses the RONDA movement :) Cheers for the feedback too, and cheers for the support also... and I know November is around the corner, so don't feel bad if it grows another inch that month, just saying it's not all about the hair, unless your partner has whiskers LML :-P

The glas and the back also look great. Also the gas tubes. Casio should say goodbye to the neo-display joke lume, and bring something better. Of course, that increases the price. But Casio sells millions of watches. They could offer good lume for less money. I hope so for the future.

@@MartinLuetzelberger These gas tubes are incredible, and CASIO would have such a market covered if they do... I mean the backlight is great, but unless you have a finger free or it has auto light, then you're in the dark, and the lume on G-Shock's is ok, but those gas tubes just make it so much more practical. I got a good deal on the watch, and the marks don't worry me, as I'm sure it'll get more... but you're right, if that was steel, it'll look proper wrecked hey... The carbon composite is really a material I'm enjoying more and more, now I'm getting more into why G-Shock have stepped in that direction, and having my GG-B100 really shows the lightness side... I can wear that Mudmaster for days without removing it, and that's the same for the LUMINOX! Cheers

@@WatchUP69MrRangeman I've never had a problem with the backlight on digital G-Shocks. I only meant the 3 minutes-lume on watches like my EFS-S510. The Casio website says: 'long-term illumination in the dark after only a short exposure to light'. If it's true, it can be written. But if it's not true, it cannot be written. They have to be honest about that. I rarely criticize Casio, but that really has to change.

@@MartinLuetzelberger I don’t know why CASIO aren’t using what some TIMEX Expedition watches have, with regards to having an option while pressing buttons the backlight remains lit, this would really make it easier to use at night... I’m sure the LED’s used today have less power consumption?

It has a very short lead, but goes like the clappers with no control at all no matter how many treats I teased it with LML :-P Trying to get it to go along the box probably took 30 attempts, but nailed it with patience :)) iMDB is the bible of movies, but need to have Spielberg to have any chance and a few helicopters LML :-P Cheers for the support my friend as always :)

I never bought any because they look too small for my taste, the reviews are mixed to bad and they offer nothing and cost a lot compared to G-Shocks.

If I told you that I bought mine for £110 would that be a price under what you thought??? Just looking at another brand... KHS, looks like a mix of LUMINOX and TRACER??? My friend, it's all about what you prefer, am not into all the range from LUMINOX, and I was looking since I got the Bear version in for a review, but as I'm not into Bears, I wanted something that was more to the point, and found this RECON, but was no longer available, so flicking through eBay I landed myself this for £110, which to me was absolutely lovely... but have now seen a few selling new at £175, but from the USA for some reason. I read the mixed reviews too, I also read the mix reviews on my GG-B100 Mudmaster being it's terrible without solar! I need to get in touch with Watcho, have a few G-Shocks I want to review :))) Have a great start to the weekend my friend :))
