It was a great decision to have Luz pretty much never mention going back to the human realm until this episode, because everything hits like a truck. Luz hasn't even been thinking about home because it doesn't actually feel like *home* to her. It was a place where everyone thought she was weird and tried to change her, and Luz feels so much guilt because her mother is also part of that world. This episode really shifts Luz as a character and introduces very interesting concepts for her.

Pretty much every decision Amity makes up until this point is for approval; from teachers, her parents, people in general, but she also had a sort of shield because she was pretending to be this mean person that was extremely confident. Amity's biggest fear is showing her *true* self, and them still rejecting her. She was terrified of aksing Luz to Grom because now Luz knows who Amity truly is, and her rejection would absolutely break her.

Oh that’s a really good read! I just figured this was her current biggest fear because it was so new to her. A lot of reactors think that it’ll be her parents, especially after what we learned in the previous episode, but she’s been dealing with them her whole life. But this is her first time really having feelings for another person, so getting rejected romantically is a brand new fear for her.

I love with how much ease Amity and Luz defeat Grom once they start working together. Not only is their magic much more powerful than usual, but they're both so much more cofident, in a way we've almost never seen them so far.

Something I love is that we really get a lot of Mama Eda this episode. “What’s the fun of watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?” “So much for Mama’s fun night out.” A few episodes ago we even had “Those are my dumb kids!” Like despite it all she’s gotten so soft for this kid. It’s sweet.

I absolutely agree. We really see Eda blossoming in this show from shying away at just hugging King and Luz to actually referring to them as her children. And it’s honestly adorable, (spoilering this next bit in case people haven’t seen the rest of the show) I can’t wait to see them reunite in the finale, that is gonna be an episode to remember.

Such an iconic episode. I love the dance and was freaking out the whole time- and Amity wanted to give the note to Luz I CAN’T!! I was so nervous because I was spoiled for the Lumity ship- and when I watched it at first I was scared about a bully - victim relationship- but the way they made it so amazing and developed them into a healthy ship is truly applaudable! They were able to work TOGETHER to defeat Grom and become more confident in their power! I also appreciate acknowledging the fact that Luz hasn't gone back-I was wondering about that- it all hits so hard, she doesn't realize she isn't home because she feels more at home in the Boiling Isles. All so intriguing and well written. Love this show! Applause to Dana Terrace!

Well Montana, I think you have a new show to add to that list haha! I mean- game changing in different ways- Sapphic witches isn’t as intense as an entire lie about society being revealed to the characters and viewers in an insane plot twist- but nonetheless an iconic episode for The Owl House!!

To be fair, Grom was where the show really took off. People started realizing that Lumity might not be queerbaiting, allowing queer audiences to get really invested in it. Plus around here is when the story really starts popping off, so that’s another reason why people just flocked to it. Moral of the story? Grom was a massive turning point for the show.

I think Owl house also just has good, like, continuity, and related a and b plots. You can reconstruct some from memory. Also the secret message helps lkke starting from Hollow Mind. (Spoilers) Okay, the message is [... T H E L O C K] Hollow Mind is H, Hunter runs away at the end... At the beginning of next one Luz tells them everything, annnd... They go to Titan Trappers! So the next episode iss... Edge of the World. Next is L... That's the episode where we catch up with Hexolios and Hunter, since Luz is missing, so... That's Labyrinth Runners. Then O... Luz returns, and king goes on a road trip with Steve, that's... O Titan where art thou. Everything after that is the dawn of the final day, Luz and Eda meet up with the CATTs, so then there's the finale with Clouds on the Horizon and King's Tide. I just reconstructed the series of events off the top of my head

It's also understandable that Anmity would be afraid of rejection from Luz because of their initial first impression. Nearly getting dissected aside, Anmity was giving Luz and co. a bit of a hard time before she joined school. Not only that but she hung out with people who kept bringing them down for being misfits, so she probably has some feelings of guilt for being such a jerk to them for a while, which might have made her feel like Luz might not want to go out with her to Prom. Thus attempting to give her a note rather than ask her directly, which she didn't get to send since she was stressing over the Grom Queen situation. In retrospect that parallels brilliantly with Luz avoiding her Mom by way of emojis instead of texting direct messages.

I think getting the students to fight Grom does make some sense. By making it a student they can have a different person face it every year. It took a while to work out what Luz's actual fear was. A more powerful witch could possibly defeat it before it ever works it out, but if the staff handled it themselves Grom would be prepared at the start of the fight and as it's shown with Eda and Amity there's nothing to stop someone else stepping in if the fight goes wrong.

I think it’s really interesting that the theories that you came up with about the letters ( 21:23 and 31:39 ) are very similar to the theories that the fandom came up with when the episode had aired. I guess it makes sense because you’re given the same information, but I just thought it was cool

When I get asked open ended questions like “how was your day”, or “how was camp?” my mind goes completely blank, like the pressure of wanting to answer makes it impossible to sort every memory into an order I can pull from to relay anything specific, even worse if I really like who I’m talking to speaking of rsd.. I guess what I’m saying is if I had someone who was comfortable with me just sharing an expression, like an emoji, and going into detail when I was able, it would ease the pressure of the situation so much and still let a conversation happen just not the one you might have been expecting, and I can’t tell you how much it means to have communication in a collaborative way instead of a more one sided pressured way of a command to “respond this way”.

5 months late, cause I'm watching along for my first time, but my take away for why they send students to fight Grom is because children tend to have childish fears, like spiders, or bullies, or monsters, which are easier to stand up to and overcome. Adults tend to have fears like nuclear annihilation, or economic collapse, the kind of stuff that can end the world.

Love how u guys not only recognized Gromiphius as being similar to the Bogart's in Harry potter but also the fact of just how messed up it is to send kids to face it. Amity aways try to please her parents, like beeing top students, associate with Basha, having plans to be in the emperor coven and etc. Luz was the one who break that in her, show her another perspective and she loves that Be rejected by Luz, in certain way, represents a rewind in all of that, so that is how much Luz is important to her

Okay, I always really loved the Eda's caring side no matter if it's towards Luz or King or someother kid. So really love that side of Eda in this episode. Then about I love everything about, you can give me any content of Lumity as long as it's happy and cute or even just cute and take it. The next major turning points are 1-19, 2-3 and everything after 2-6. 2-1, 2-2, 2-4, and 2-5 are still incredibly important, but they don’t set up as much that is important to the overall plot that the others that I mentioned do.

Now this may just be my shallow interpretation but I think it's precisely because they are kids that they have to face Grom, as we grow our fears become less tangible and in some cases harder to overcome like heartbreak, loneliness, abandonement, etc. Except for extreme cases most children fears can be rationalized or straight up faced so yeah that's why I think the duty of Grom vanquish relies on children.
