I've had the Lumix S5 since launch, and I thought it was about time I actually reviewed it! This camera has become my main workhorse for corporate and wedding work, and it's just a great little camera that I've had a lot of fun with.

Once again, a wonderful review covering the real reason most folks reach for full frame with certain tasks. I wanted to thank you once again for showing the great “grandma” exposure correction along with the invariant ISO daytime noise examples. It’s these kinds of direct and clear examples that take all of 5 seconds but speak volumes. Most other reviewers I see forego these visual examples and just drop a “it has amazing dynamic range and the sensor is great” as a one-liner and leave it at that. As a micro four thirds user, it’s these comparisons that I consider incredibly valuable. I don’t want a channel that lives in a vacuum. The fact you’re sharing m43 content in contrast to full frame options is exactly what I want to know and see! Thank you!

Love the video! You and James Popsys have taken such a nice approach to handling the fan fanatics of different systems. Like you said, right tool is all it's about. With regards to doing FF content, I would love to see that content from you. Just switched from G9 to S5. However the title of your channel may forbid you from doing full frame content and I would understand. Happy either way!

Thanks for sharing. I also got the S5 recently and love it. I only use one lens on it for time being: an adapted Leica M-mount Voigtlander 40mm f1.2. Shooting this combo slows me down and makes the whole process meditative. The native lenses all seem very good, but are very, very large, and I will for that reason also hold on to my M43 gear. Love your videos. Ciao from Portugal. Jan.

Great video - I agree with you! I spent the last 18 months experimenting with FF cameras (A7c and S5) and have come back to the G9 with some lightweight fast glass as the best "Goldilocks" camera for hiking/travel videos. The kit weight to image quality advantage of m4/3 in these situations is inescapable. After doing the obligatory FF vs m4/3 camera bakeoff I too found that with care and experience you can get very good low light/astro photos from m4/3, BUT it is easier with the S5 and a nice f2.8. In future all my indoor rainy day cat photos will be with the S5. I look forward to more content on your channel featuring both m4/3 and FF. Lumix and m4/3 are both sooooooo under rated.

Obviously for weddings and events full frame is the best! I, in my very limited experience, shot a couple of concerts on my old EM5 mkI and the result were great (I got some of my favourite shots ever), it took a lot of effort. An FF camera would've been very welcome! As you said, the right tool for the job, so keep the FF content coming! I for one will enjoy both that and Micro Four Thirds, when I'm not out and about shooting with my new EM5 mkIII

An excellent overview of the S5, a camera that thanks to the pandemic and Lumix not exhibiting any photo shows, I've yet to even see, let alone handle... It appears to be a great camera, though if only it was a full frame sensor in the G9's perfect body, I'd be even more tempted. Fascinated by the ISO invariance technology, in the context of MFT v S5. Nice.

Nice, honest review! Finally, a professional photographer who is facing the truth and telling all about it without any problems. We can not change physics. Sensor size matters, and matters a lot in terms of quality. It is not a problem, just a fact of life. And all the details about the cameras, the lenses... Great review!

@jockturner1547
@jockturner1547 Жыл бұрын
You never need to give up a camera you enjoy using, however unfortunately it’s just a fact of life that a larger sensor yields better image quality. I own a GH5 and s5. So for professional use I use my s5 primarily simple due to versatility. For almost everything on an event I can rock my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and get images and video that looks amazing with decent enough subject separation without needing to ever change lens. Can even use the apsc crop that Jerry mentioned in the video to get a little extra reach with minimal hit to quality in video. However for personal stuff, landscape, wildlife etc I’m still using my GH5 because it’s just so fun to use and the quality when exposed well is by far good enough. When working on jobs you can’t always expose well and that’s where the S5 takes the cake! Keep enjoying your olympus cameras even if you own a FF camera!

Recently brought an S5 with the 20-60mm and 50mm1.8 as a kit, there have been some great deals on this (which might be over now) with an additional Amazon discount for some other reason, it was a smidge over 1600 quid for the three a few months ago. Reasons, I liked the 20mm kit lens, I think whilst you can always crop in to simulate a slightly longer lens, you can't go wider after the event (accepting stitching if you plan it out for a static subject ) a 20mm option means I won't be needing a wide angle any time soon, all I need is long tele zoom and I am set up for any subject and situation I would be interested in photographing. Micro 4/4 cameras are some of my favorite designs but apart from my Phone im only going to have 1 camera and the carfree ISO and low light fidelity are important to me. so went for big sensor. Great Video your explanations were spot on and clear. Subed.

You can post whatever you like! Quite a few channels are going more photography based and less gear based, I think it's the right way forwards. Most new cameras coming out now excel in image quality so much that the gap between sensor sizes has closed more and more. There's still the obvious advantages/disatvantages to any piece of kit anyone uses, but if you learn to use that tool in the way that gives you the outcome that you want, then it matters less now. If I ever attempt to get into a situation where I can professionally shoot, I would do the same; that is, use the gear I currently have (all Olympus) and then weigh up if I need something else or if I get what I need out of what I have. That's the right way go to about it isn't it! By the way, the images and clips you included in this video are supreme; such nice colour and production you have on there! Sweet work!

I use the S5 for work, and I would 100% get it for my personal work if it weren't for the fact that I shoot wildlife and apart from the low burst rate, I just cannot imagine carrying around those wildlife lenses. My 100-300 (200-600 equiv) weighs the same amount as the 24-105!!! But I love the S5 so much, the colors are world-class and the video features are amazing for the price. Shoot if you keep making S5 videos you may convince me one day haha.

But, 100-300 isn't 200-600 equiv. I loved my 42.5mm mft lens for it's close focusing capability, but i now use full frame partly because of the way short teles/portrait lenses compress foreground and background. And the iso thing mentioned in this video. Totally agree about the practical side of it, if i relied more on long teles and shot wildlife i'd get mft with something like 100-300 for the convenient size, price and maybe also shooting speed (?) in a heartbeat.

As someone who sold his G9 2 years ago and went on a FF and Fuji tour, I have been missing the ergos of the G9 not so much the noise though. So the S5 seems like a perfect G9 replacement and getting those panasonic colours. Thinking of getting the 20-60, 50 1.8 and sigma 100-400 to go with it initially and then a a UW and the 24-105 later on.

Interesting you use the 3 Sigma lenses, I have those in M4/3 mount and think they are superb, only thing I’ve noticed is a slight colour shift when video footage is combined with Lumix lenses so I tend to use them together as a set on any shoot rather than mix them with other lenses. Keep it up and thank you.

Looking forward to more S5 videos. Check out the guy on the Narrowband channel for M43 astro photography, he has amazing photos but of course you will need amazing telescopes at amazing prices LOL! Love your videos! Just wanted to 🤓 out on the idea of how awesome it would be to have S5 or GH7 shot ISO invarience 24p. Then if you don't clip the highlights you would have amazing recovery. It got me wondering if you noticed any extra latitude when coloring S5 footage vs GH6 footage? Also if the S5 has 6k or 4k photo mode, having that .h265 seems like it could be amazing and there would be no crop in 4k 60p correct? I almost always shoot 4k 60p photo mode for video and it is incredible on GH5.

@@nickgylo Hi Nick. If you get the G9, you will have to take lens with you! The G9 is not as expensive, especially if you buy a used one. I sold my G9 and my mft lens. One day, if possible, I am going to buy a second S5 as my backup. Why? Because the picture, video and lowlight performance of the S5 beat the G9 hands down. I am a portrait and video shooter. The panasonic 20-60mm and the panasonic 1.8 85mm are good lens for the S5. The 20-60mm is not a long or fast zoom, but it is not heavy and it is sharp!. Combined with the S5, it is also OK in low light and wet weather situations. I now have both of those lens and the sigma 28-70mm and I am hoping for a second S5 in the future! The Panasonic FZ 2000/2500 is a very good bridge camera for the price, especially for video. However, it is not weather sealed and lowlight performance is not so good.

Thanks for the video Emily. I'm also from the MFT system and love my Olympus EM1 mark II. I was drawn to the Lumix S5 after I was looking for a camera that would pair well with Sigma-Art lenses. Actually, I was enchanted by the SIGMA 85mm f1.4 and I just need something to bolt it to. From time to time I also photograph weddings, but I still don't really get into that with the S5. Can you give more tips, for example for the focus area? I never thought that one day I would shoot with ISO values above 1600. But the S5 blew me away. Thank you very much and I wish you lots of fun with the S5.

I think people should be more open minded regarding which system is best for the job. I have used m43 for the past 10 years but I use a Canon RP for my church event and other activities because full frame does give you more leeway when you make a mistake. But for family stuff and most everything else, I use my new OM-1 because it is so much easier to carry four five lenses with you all the time and won’t weight you down.

Brilliant video! I really enjoyed the story telling and there's certainly no pitch forks here :) It's not like you can chance messing up someone's wedding and the latitude in dynamic range that the S5 obviously gives must help prevent such things or at least takes the edge off the worry. Hi, thanks a lot for very comprehensive information about the camera. I would have one question though regarding the adapting crop lenses. In my case I have Leica CL with bunch of nice leica lenses (few primes and most importantly wide angle zoom lens, which has stunning IQ) and I have been wondering, if it’s possible to combine aps-c / crop mode with high resolution mode? So I would be able to compensate lost in resolution (due to crop mode) when shooting landscape from tripod.. If this makes sense. Have a great day!

That said I love still photography so I wanted a camera that did both well. My question is about your focus settings. I do mostly wildlife work which is very similar to weddings as you need to be fast to capture the moments. As you know LUMIX has gotten a lot of criticism for their focus technology and rightfully so when compared to canon, Nikon, etc. wondering if you can tell me what focus settings you use most to assure you don’t miss the shot? Great Video! Re your topics. I don't mind as long as its team Panasonic (and Olympus just cuz they're both underdogs). I think Panasonic makes some of the best cameras in the world and if it wasn't for the perceived 'focus issues' more people would use it. Unfortunately, the other manufacturers have set the bar very high with phase detect now such that people prefer to compromise somewhere else rather than with AF. It's not that Panasonic focusing is bad its just, when it comes to getting the shot it's one less thing to worry about with the phase detect solutions most of the other manufacturers use. Most other issues are fixable, AF issues tend not to be once the shot is already taken. I'm really sorry Panasonic didn't go with a well implemented PD solution for the GH6 just so that people would no longer have that excuse to rate the camera lower than the others. Panasonic really deserve more kudos than they get.

Well, isn't an S5 much like a micro four thirds camera with a full frame sensor? By which I mean same brand, same menu interface, same look and feel etc? Just a specialised tool, slightly outside of the niche. Your channel is very good for explanations of techniques, which is sensor-size neutral anyway. I also really enjoy your m43 gear reviews, because you talk about what you use and how you use it. I think your channel is less dependent on specific brands and gear than you think, and adding in S5 content is relevant and no problem. Also, some m43 cameras are apparently iso-invariant "ish" and it pays to experiment (which you obviously do). G80/GX80 is said to be "ish" and I do find that I can crank up those shadows a lot compared to other cameras I have owned. I tend to over-expose a lot now, save those clouds from blowing out and recover plenty detail from shadows.

As a GH5 owner, I'm mainly here for MFT video content, but also like to see photography content (the lenses tests are very informative - I bought a 7Artisans 7.5mm fisheye lens after your review and I don't regret it!); But it's always nice to have a look beyond the horizon, and of course full format cameras are a thing; in this regard, what interests me the most, would be the inexpensive full format solutions there are - because what is MFT if not inexpensive? I think that's a big reason why many people use that format... me too.

finally managed to watch the whole video because it is not 1 in the morning ;-). All these discussions about format and ... is nonsense. It is much more about the features of a camera than the sensor size, and some people would say even features don't matter. Well I was out yesterday with my analog OM1 and original PenF from 1965 and it was kind of confusing not having livetime and live composite on neither of them.

Great video! Quick question for you if you have time to answer. With your adapted Samyang 14mm on the S5, does it record video with the lens correction correctly applied in full frame mode? or do you get the warped 'fisheye' lens effect. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sigma 14-24 for a shoot (the Sigma does correct lens distortion brilliantly)

I use both the S5 and GH5 professionally and whilst the image on the S5 is fantastic, the ergonomics are horrible. The GH5 feels and handles better than any camera I've used, but the S5 buttons are mushy, the shutter button is wobbly and cheap, the lens release button on the wrong side and awkward, the mf selector switch is difficult to reach, grip is boxy and the whole camera is ugly! I’m all over the place haha. Very happy to say though that there’s so much push and pull in the s5 (and my other cameras) that you can really change it up and experiment each time. I tend to shoot V-log a bit spicy (+half a stop or so) and then I can do whatever is needed with it in post

If you use DXO PhotoLab Deep Prime or DXO PureRaw Deep Prime newer M43 cameras even Olympus OMD E-M1ii are good all the way up to ISO 6,400. It's the only noise reduction that works this good. Topaz DeNoise and On1 NoNoise are not even close to DXO. DXO even restores color loss due to high ISO. The downside if you have to load up all your raw files and I export to DNG and still edit in Adobe Lightroom. But the plus side your gear is lighter when shooting.

Great video and welcome to the world of the LUMIX S5. I too shoot MFT and APS-C (Fujifilm & Leica CL). So the LUMIX was a great addition to my kit. I have a question about your use of APS-C L mount lenses or others adapted to your S5 for photography. How do you get rid of the vignetting in-camera without shooting with a 1:1 aspect ratio? Unlike the Sony full-frame cameras which allow you to select an APS-C mode, LUMIX S series cameras don't seem to have this option for photography, only for video. Please help because I can't seem to figure this out at all. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi! As soon as you put a sigma apsc lens onto the s5 it automatically switches to apsc mode and punches in, for both photo and video 😊 the camera works exactly as normal in all modes. I imagine with a fully manual apsc lens you’d have to crop in your raw files.

@@MicroFourNerds aha! Understood. Unfortunately I don't have any of the Sigma APS-C L mount lenses. I have the 28-70mm f2.8 and 45mm f2.8 both of which are full-frame lenses natively. On my Leica CL that 45mm becomes a 67.5mm. I'm fine with the autofocus lenses from Sigma. No issues there. The issues come when using manual focus lenses whether yheyr are native L mount APS-C lenses, like the TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 or an adapted Voïtlander 21mm f4. That's where the issue with vignetting comes into play. I was told by another S5 user that Panasonic didn't provide a manual switch telling the camera to recognise APS-C lenses in photo mode. It only works when doing video. Unfortunately, I only use this camera for photography. 🥺

Can someone explain this to me? I bought a Lumix s5m2 and on the site it sais "micro four thirds mount". I then looked on the official website and it says "L-mount". On the official website it also give you a list of compatible lenses and in the Sigma lenses sections, it says that DC lenses (normaly used for aps-c cameras) are totally compatible with the camera. On the Sigma website, you can filter the lenses by mount and there are the two options "MFT or L-mount". Some websites say that with the alliance, they should all be compatible by now but there is still a difference between the two of 0.75mm, how can they be compatible?

I find it ok in lower light for focusing, not excellent. I tend to use my sigma 85mm in those wedding conditions which is much better. I never turn my red light on, I find it distracts the guests too much. I would say the lumix stock is better than the sigma stock when focusing in the dark. A photographer I work with a lot uses the sigma stock lens and when we shoot off-camera flash stuff together at night his S5 always hunts (even with the red light on) and my lumix stock latches on.
