Everyone knows how great the Panasonic S5 is for the money since it can output many different flavours of RAW via HDMI.
I rarely use the RAW capabilities of my Panasonic cameras, but when I do, I absolutely love the results that I get.
In this video I wanted to see whether you guys could tell the difference between ProRes RAW from the Lumix S5 and the internal codecs found on the Panasonic S5, just to see if the flexibility of RAW is really worth it.
All of the shots in this video were taken at the same time with controlled lighting conditions, and the only difference was the codec. I even tried to match the colours as best as I could between the ProRes RAW footage and the internal codecs from the Lumix S5.
One of the biggest downsides to ProRes RAW and all flavours of RAW video is of course the huge file sizes, so you really need to utilise all of that extra data to make it worthwhile.
All Panasonic Lumix full frame cameras can output ProRes RAW, so this video should apply for the Lumix S1, S5, S1H and BS1H :)
I really hope you guys find this video interesting, and if you did then please comment below and let me know your thoughts.
Thanks for watching!

**NOTE ** KZfaq has REAALLYY compressed the example footage after watching it back on here. Especially in the darker areas, you can see banding and mushiness that isn't there on the master file. Worth bearing in mind!

This is a great video and a fantastic sequence comparison too! I guessed correctly on the RAW sequence, and i find that the reds & skin tones take on a slight vibrance, but on the whole its barely noticeable; i am very impressed with the internal codecs on this camera, especially as a reasonable majority of my work is for platforms that apply high-level compression. Having worked with the ProRes RAW codec on a handful of projects, it's super versatile for wide dynamic range shots and i find you can identify the pros/cons in comparison when you have detailed shadows & cloudy skies in frame; the internal codecs can definitely handle the range, but struggle to express that range if you've gotta squish it into a 5 or 7-stop SDR colour space, while the RAW somehow takes the abuse when you compress your dynamic range and doesn't look too bad! 10/10 as always buddy, great content, love the way you've explained the differences, benefits, and issues with working across the different codecs available with this camera!

Thanks for doing this, as I'm so reluctant to myself it seems! Even before I saw B I felt like A was ProRes raw. Sometimes with raw video it isn't even about gradients, or extra colour information, it's something closer to a gut feeling that it just appears more realistic and less compressed, even with extra noise in frame. It's rare I bother to shoot raw though, it just usually doesn't make much sense for low budget commercial/corporate work unless you are doing green screen or trying to match cameras. For more of a short film project, music video or commercial with a bit more budget it's good to know it's possible even with cameras like the S5.

Yeah I felt the same way after recording this sequence and editing it. I must say that grading RAW footage is so much more fun! The S5 is an absolute beast of a camera, severely underrated!

Going with A being Pro res and B internal. Both look very similar/good but I feel like B has a little more compression in the background gradients, however that could just be youtube being youtube. While working raw can be fun, I've yet to really find a practical application for it since typically I'm always having to squeeze video down to 8 bit formats for broadcast/internet anyway. If anything raw has gotten me into a little trouble when art directors fall in love with a raw version of my work in the timeline and the broadcast version can't carry that same level of color fidelity.
@JoshCameron

Yeah those were the things that gave it away for me too… but KZfaq does definitely even the playing fields way more than when I was reviewing the footage in my NLE. It’s a shame that we share our work on platforms that don’t allow the true quality to shine through, but I guess that won’t change anytime soon. RAW is awesome though, and I’ll definitely use it more for my bigger projects. But it’s definitely a treat and not an essential!

At minimum, this proves that the S5 internal codecs are outstanding even by itself, especially for 8-Bit deliverables (aka 99% of uploads for streaming). Ninja V for pre-prepped/planned masterpieces, internal for run-and-gun.

i use ProRes Raw for green screen video's. The 12 bit gives al lot more colour information and keys a lot smoother. Because of the well lit environment and the lack of dark parts there is almost no noise. Then i render the keyed footage to ProRes for further editting and filesize sake...

And I am not so sure about MFT future...L mount seams to stand on more solid grounds lately...specialty since they introduce the relatively affordable S Prime Line the 50mm is fantastic. I love MFT and use it a lot because of my 6 cameras BMPCC,GH4,5,5s that have it. But since I got the S5 I use mostly the S5. You could wait for the S1 mark II with better codecs or the next S5...

Nice Vidéo, About the use of 12 bit raw footage. I use Black Magic Vidéo Assist to record Braw with S5 in 2 cases... Need of extra latitude and colors dept shooting on gimbal or tripod, or when shooting multicam with my BMPCC4K 6K and older GH5,5s. It is just much easier to match in resolve. Downside of the raw shooting over HDMI is that the E stabilisation (you Don't have the mode to shoot like on tripod) is not working...and shooting handheld is much more challenging. It is because the whole 5.9K of the sensor are used . Personally I love the colors and footage out of the S5. Bravo Josh for the video

Can you record in Prores 422 at 5.9K or is that exclusively locked to Prores RAW? I ask since a lot of my projects don't need RAW and the price of the Ninja V has dropped dramatically in the states to where I could finally comfortably invest in one. The S5iiX isn't worth upgrading to for me since I already heavily invested into manual lenses and the Ninja V can be carried onto more future cameras so it seems like a sound investment currently over spending more on an S5IIX. Thanks for any answers

Most important reason to use prores (not specifically raw) is the way a pc handles files. Visually the all- i internal is great, but because of the 400mb per second and the compression it’s really heavy on an editing machine. Besidrs that: It’s just great to take an ssd from the ninja v and start editing.
@JoshCameron

100% agree Aris! The ProRes family of codecs are super good to edit with and normally if the project is using a satellite editor then I’ll always use a flavour of ProRes specifically for this reason :)

After taking screenshots of every shot in sequence A and B, then compared them side by side, I noticed a few things. First, I know the colors initially differs a little bit (some sort of color shift), but even after you tried to match them, there are still some very noticeable differences : Artificial lights look very different. Your TV LED strips (unless you changed the color in between shots) looks white with ProRes RAW and a strong blue with the Internal codec. Same with the fridge light; ProRes RAW look more orange and less saturated, while the internal codec looks more yellow and saturated. It's the other way around with your skin when you sit on the couch; it looks more saturated with ProRes RAW, and more natural with the internal codec. On the TV shot, if you look at the right wall (corner), the shaded area has a strong green shift on the internal codec (typical with low bitrate/highly compressed codecs). Also, when we look at your gold Playstation controller on the bottom of your living room table, it's greener/yellower with the internal codec, and more brownish/sand with ProRes RAW. So is it worth it for things like KZfaq videos? Definitely NOT. Like you mentionned, the denoising process along with the files sizes (which can easily be over 10x larger) is already a deal breaker for this sort of things. Although, for short films and serious commercial projects, it is definitely something to consider. I personnally never tried ProRes RAW on my S5, but I've been a BRAW user for 3 years now (BMPCC 6K) and it is truly amazing! Regular ProRes HQ is also a very good thing to consider, especially for handheld shots since you have access to the amazing e-stabilization and Boost IS from the S5 while still getting a 4K image (not possible with BRAW/ProRes RAW, it's IBIS only so you have to use post stabilization when needed).
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron Жыл бұрын
Woah! You really ripped the footage apart ! I love that, that's awesome. Yeah I tried to colour match as close as possible without spending too much time on it, so there will for sure be a few differences. But Yes, I would definitely agree with the notion that ProRes RAW isn't worth it for KZfaq vids, unless of course you're showing a short film that you've made etc. I love shooting RAW, and it's great for a few of my client projects, but it's not necessary all the time :P

"After taking screenshots of every shot in sequence A and B" I admire the intention but he did not provide a download link, so you're talking about a compressed version on KZfaq. That is a flawed analysis from the get go.
@davidmultimedia2024
@davidmultimedia2024 Жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCoastGTA In the case of a comparison like this one, KZfaq’s compression doesn’t change anything since both clips have the same applied. I don’t need the master files to notice all these differences and know for sure that these aren’t the results of KZfaq’s compression. We are not talking about artifacts in general, but the differences in colors and shades in between ProRes RAW and the internal codec (and the fact is that there are A LOT of very noticeable differences).

While I did get the answers right I feel like the differences were very small and ultimately I was more guessing going off a few things. I would say if most of your work is done for youtube or any other heavily compressed online video source then the 5.9k is definitely not worth it. I would say that is really only worth it for specific client work that won't get hit with online compression or where the client just really wants it.
@JoshCameron

I agree with this. I do think RAW has its benefits for larger shoots where you need to really push and pull the footage to get the results you’re after. I tend to use RAW for my bigger (better paying) jobs since it adds a little more “prestige” to the whole experience. And also, ProRes and ProRes RAW are incredible editing codecs, so if another editor/colourist is working on the project too then I’d normally choose a flavour of ProRes instead of the internal :) For this stuff though, you don’t need RAW , it’s just nice to have! skin tones are better in the first sequence, I guessed it right it was RAW. I see this all the time while comparing and matching GH5 footage with blackmagic pocket 4K using BRAW... Also, not convinced to use the S5 (or any other mirrorless panasonic camera, except maybe GH6 with internal prores) because of this issue, I don't have time to put a powered on external monitor on top of the camera. However blackmagic pocket 4K is really not ergonomical/practical to use. Maybe I should search for a canon C200 cinema camera and leave the mirrorless (and phone) world...

The gh7 has Prores Raw internal recording, so it must e possible for the S5iix to record Raw internal. But if Pana made it possible iam not for Prores RAW, but rather Have Braw internal.

I have the fujifilm X-h2s and have the ability to shoot proress raw. I think most people shoot the internal codec more often is because this is what bigger KZfaqrs teach us. We’re taught that we don’t need anything more than Proress and I think that’s because they don’t know how to edit Raw Footage.

Yeah I see what you’re saying. I actually have a few videos in the making currently about working with ProRes RAW, both in SDR and HDR workflows, so if you’d ever like to make the most of your XH2s then you may be interested in those vids ! 🙌🏼

The compression has evened the playing fields quite a bit I’d say, but it’s still very interesting to see how the footage looks compared to each other on the platforms that we normally tend to share our work on :)

I think I am not taking advantage of the full potential of the RAW of the S5 camera. I'm using it with Premiere Pro and it hasn't worked the way I want it to. I tried DaVinci Resolve, but it didn't read the RAW from the camera. So I'm shooting everything in V-Log

Don't use RAW unless it is for high end or high end "client" work. It can save your ass if you screw up your WB or exposure, but V Log in Prores can already offer a good deal of protection in that regard. RAW is either for your own feature film or when some one else is paying for the hard drive space. I just shot a feature film on the S5 into the Ninja, RAW 5.9k. The image is pure poetry but a 90 minute feature, at the low end, will take up 16 "Terabytes" of storage.
@JoshCameron

Examples like this on youtube are futile. The KZfaq compression is so great it eliminates any differences we might see as "significantly different." If this is a good representation it's time to say "DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. IT'S NOT WORTH IT TO SHOOT IN RAW IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES."

I must say, grading the RAW was a much nicer process and I felt like I could get a lot more out of the image, but when you compare two edits side by side that were done with the same colouring techniques , the difference is actually a lot smaller than you’d expect! Thanks for watching Peter :)

Pro res was A? maybe perhaps!!! I couldn't really tell to be honest, but the colour grading seemed a little warmer in A. Edit ok i got it right but only by luck! Good video, keep them coming. Perhaps a video comparing external 6k with internal 6k would be good if possible? So i can see if its worth getting a Ninja v...
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron Жыл бұрын
Hey Rob! Haha you were right :) Defo going to make more videos like this. Unfortunately the Panasonic S5 doesn't shoot 6K internally , so if you did want that full 5.9K readout then the Ninja V would be the only way currently with the S5 :)
@Norain1992

I only shoot Raw if I need the 5.9K 30p, since it is not possible internally 😋 The extra work to put in Grafing and editing Raw is way too mich for the benefit you geht out of it. The 12bit are very useful for keying and vfx though. 😊
@JoshCameron

Yeah I totally get that, and the above reasons are also why I'd use RAW for a particular project too! If that extra flexibility is needed then you simply can't go wrong with RAW :)
