A lot of people have a love/hate relationship with SSD recording and now that it the LUMIX S5IIX has USB-SSD recording, it opens up a ton more options for video. There are definitely drawbacks to the SSD recording workflow but overall the benefits are seem to be outweighing the negative.

You don't need to mount that SSD on that camera, use a bit longer type-C cable and buy a small slingbag, then put that SSD in that bag. Another thing to consider is buying a peak design strap and change it to sling mode, so whenever you feel tired just sling your camera around your body without breaking the cable connection. The bag will hold your ssd while the strap will hold your camera. I get used to work with my A7C when connected to video transmitter with that method using mini HDMI cable, and i'm sure it will work well on S5II-X with SSD.

With this method, I might worry the connector on camera side will lose since the long cable just tangling around while you moves.

I think this is the right option if you’re using a gimbal. With a housing and cradle to mount the ssd the setup will be even heavier and also harder to balance for the gimbal.

As a photographer who is just moving into video, I have been constantly impressed by the amount of options and solutions video makers have. And all relatively cheap and solid, smallrig comes to mind. And in all honesty, once you start doing video, it all becomes bulky regardless. The way i feel about video at the moment is, if I cant find a solution then i am not looking hard enough or thinking hard enough. The kondorblue is such an elegant solution. Costly? Maybe. But if you have clients then its a minimal expense. And you have the options of having a blade bay to mirror the information so you dont work directly on the drive. If that doesn't work then you have a ssd mounting cage which has a pretty small foot print. Options are endless. On photography sets i have seen people work with a lot less and made it work. Which has always impressed me.

Love your videos, and sound choice, and had a question about this, thinking of buying it soon. How good is the weather sealing? I love your low light video and you said you had it out in the snow with no trouble? I’m somewhat new to serious videography and ruled out the ZVE1 as much as I want it’s sensor due to its lack of weather sealing! Hope you can help shed some light on this subject and keep up the great work!

Thanks Caleb! I think the setup for me would be S5 II X with the BM Video assist 5 inch mounted on a cage, with the DMW XLR-1 for audio, HDMI going into the video assist and the USB C port hooked into a power bank. Pretty sure 5:1 BRAW would be smaller and more versatile than Prores HQ, and it can be recorded to SD card in the assist :)

I used to keep all the original footage after a project was finished and had to build a server to keep it all safe, now, I delete the originals and keep the proxis only... the new h265 encoding 420 10 bit from davinci proxy generator is very good and the files are crazy small... i would say they are still usable in case years later the clients calls again hoping to use some of the old footage. and whit AI upscallers nowadays I feel even more comfortable doing that and I have been able to save TONs of space on my server for new projects. just wait a moth later after the project is paid and released from the client side to delete the originals.

For me, the only thing I worry about with SSD recording are the file space limitations. At the very highest settings of the camera, I've heard that even with a 2TB SSD, you're only getting about an hour and a half of footage. I'd love to see a real world test of this! Ahhhh, who am I kidding? I'll just buy the thing and try it out myself LMAO Great video as always😊

@@weplaywax oh I'm fully aware that I don't NEED to shoot at the highest codecs, but I do have occasions when I DO need to. That's where the concern lies. To be clear, it's a relatively minor concern, as CFast Type B cards from companies like Angelbird aren't too expensive, but still. But yeah, I've been working with cameras for a long ass time. Totally aware of how codecs work.

Because DaVinci Resolve came out to the iPad and I use an SSD to edit my videos as my 12.9 inch M1 iPad Pro has 256 GB internal storage - the SSD recording is big plus for me. It will save me a whole step in my workflow. The one where I have to unload the footage from an SD card to the SSD. So SSD recording is a great selling point for me. It is something I didn't know I needed.

Hey, Caleb. Thanks for these videos. I’m watching this one for the second time and notice some of your language is very vague about things that really require more specificity. For example, ‘you can format the drive if you want…’ when as an amateur videographer I’m more interested in you saying some more specific like ‘Lumix recommend you use their camera to format the drive; not your laptop’. Hope that helps. Keep making this stuff and I’ll keep watching it!

You can buy one of those aftermarket ’dummy’ batteries and connect to external power bank. This way you can have almost unlimited power and can save the USB for SSD use. The two USB-slots in the Nikon Z8 show where it will end up in the future. I think this is the way to go. Even better would be a general standard for the pro blade format so the camera can get a slot for this for example in a small vertical extension grip under the camera.

they should make an SD to USBc adaptor so you can plug the SSD to the card slots. ... or allow recording directly to 2 cards at the same time and then compile it while you stop recording... (I remember 5DII could do this with Magic lantern). but actually what we should do is file a , whats the name in English those kind of big lawsuits to allow other manufacturers rather than RED to allow internal RAW recording, or at least modify it so RAW can be recorded to an external SSD.... (class lawsuit I think is the name) Actually the solution is to have some smart software developers to hack the firmware of those cameras and let the users do the "illegal" part of recording Raw to their SSDs.... they wouldn't be able to stop it, would become like torrent. ... later, after they see there is not stopping users, if they want to monetize on it they should sell it as an upgrade but they need a little push first. I would love everyone to have access to RAW, I have access to cameras to record RAW and it sets me out a bit better than some videographers but I feel for those starting, in the end is my skill and not the gear I think that gets me more clients.

@@bingbang9643 I think the power-consumption of SSDs is already a nightmare on USB and the cameras are operating at the edge of what is possible. I doubt that the SD-slot can do this. This might would work with SSDs with battery. I don't think the SSD-Slot is made for this kind of usage and expect mechanical problems. My preferred solution would be a battery grip with additional power and a stable internal USB-connection from the camera to the pro blade SSD. No USB-C connector and cable in between. This wound improve stability of the connection, power supply and heat management away from the main camera body. It wouldn't be part of the basic price of the camera and you can add it if you need it. There was a lawsuit about RAW-internal between RED and Nikon. They somehow settled it behind close doors and Nikon is now allowed to use it. I don't think this will remain a Nikon exclusive thing and all the others are going for it. I expect Panasonic will have pretty good implementations in the next S1H camera and may be a GH7.

Definitely seems awkward with the form factors of most of the approved drives, and straight cables sticking out from the side of the body. Lots of opportunity for things to go wrong there, I would not want to use it as such anywhere but a tripod. Hopefully the aftermarket rig companies jump on this. A nice low-profile right-angle cable that hugs the camera body would reduce a lot of potential disasters- I would like to see HDMI cables like this as well. That and a compact enclosure for regular M2/NVME drives, with solid mounting options, would make this a much less annoying option.

So, I'm kind of in between waiting to see what the S1H mkii will be able to do when it's announced. I think that camera will record to cf express as well as externally. The benefit of the X's codecs for color grading does have value to me. However, I am wondering if that value would be almost null once the S1H 2 is announced... because I would most likely pay a similar price once i bought the X and a cage and a pro blade with handle... because that does seem like an optimum combination despite the fact that i have some ssds already.

Great video. Nice points about the SSD recording. But 1 thing that also worth mentioning. NVME SSD will heat up quickly with high speed data rate. I have M.2 NVME 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus which I use it as external SSD inside M.2 NVME Thunderbolt aluminium caddy with thermal pads. Everytime I use it to transferring data, it get really hot. I can imagine that Condor Blue SSD Top handle will be hot for us to hold when operationg the camera. But maybe someone could confirm how hot that top handle in operations with SSD in it.

Usually they get hot because of the high speed transfers of 3000mb/s or more. But for 1900 should be fine.

@@godface81Me myself use Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB inside a NVME caddy for my Sigma FP. When I shoot 12bit CDNG RAW, the SSD heat up quickly, it's uncomfortable to hold the caddy. But when I shoot All-I it only get warm. The SSD performs reliably, never have problems except it's getting hot during shoots.

Hope other brands will work. Since Samsung T5 is discontinued so it's hard to get. And Sandisk Extremes are known for being unreliable (that's why they are 40% off lately) ... so there is no choice actually.

@@user-gj5cx9ik5m I don't record High Res Pro Res to Sd. I record to Cf Express. Yes indeed it is more expensive but I don't want another contraption on top of my Cage. At times, I also use the USB-C cable for the Extra Battery power if needed for very long takes. Unfortunately, you can't use both at same time. Thats the benefit. Blessings

i have had my S5iiX for 4 months now. of the issues you mentioned i have over come them. be curious what your thoughts would be. the bulky. i got the cage and amount to set the drive on the camera. the Small rig cage that you appear to have. the USB c in Use. i am using a dummy battery with a battery bank. YES, i found other issues. not all work. they do need to be designed for higher power output in the 9v range and more than 5w as well. but it does work. it in itself add to a bulk factor. what i am now running into is USB-c SSD recording and outputting HDMI to an external monitor.
