The new Lumix ZS200 is the love child of super zoom FZ1000, the big bridge camera from Panasonic, and its compact mini zoom LX100. All shoot fantastic 4K video but what compromises were made to stuff the best of the LX100 and FZ1000 into a true pocket camera for travellers? This review will give you the info you need to decide to move up or stay with your old camera.

What a constructive and supportive comment! Unlike the "pro" reviews I try to look at how we'd use these in real life, we forget settings, get lost in menus, lose the manual, not so hung up on RAW versus jpeg. More about convenience, value, quality and how intuitive it is. Pretty much what we think about when trying to decide on what to buy in a fairly high end camera (for a pocket). I appreciate your leaving the comment, thanks!

Excellent review. I have the FZ1000 mark 2 and its lens is brilliant, as is the stabilisation, resolution and features. However it is heavy and very large, but still better than carrying a DSLR around plus multiple lenses. The ZS 200 would be almost perfect as a travel camera except that many find its lens just too soft with no way to sharpen it in the menus. There's too much processing going on leading to a smearing of the image in low light and higher ISO. The FZ1000 deals with low light a lot better.
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo Жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said (and I also have the second version of the FZ1000, now FZ2500, and it rocks!). Yes the ZS200 lens comprises a bit to get that zoom with a 1” sensor, if it was a smaller sensor you would get a “higher” effective zoom. But I’ll take the 1” sensor anyway over zoom. Stealth and weight for a camera may be very important for you, depends where you are travelling. If i was backpacking or in dodgy bits of Europe, ZS200, rental car in Scotland, FZ1000 aye laddie!

I just tried it out. Zoomed in it can still do time lapse (the ZS200). I don’t know about the LX100 as I no longer have it. Sony’s “Star Trails” time lapse effect is very cool but not on the Panasonic.

Thanks for your video. If you were to pick one camera which one would you pick & why? Like the ability to add filters & lens hood.
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 3 жыл бұрын
Since I did this video a few years ago the camera world has moved forward and the FZ2500 replacement to the FZ1000 is a better featured option. But...as a travel camera specifically, the ZS200 still rules for size and zoom. No filters option (well not easily, there are 3rd party add ons but I wouldn't mess with those) or lens hood. Yes thats a shame. But the only filter I think that cant be made up in editing software are ND filters to slow video down and create a nicer looking effect, or if you want to do slow exposure photos (waterfalls etc). There are ways to stack photos to create the soft water motion effect without the ND filters (youtube is full of examples) but that ND filter is an issue to bring down bright sunny exposures to 1/50 or 1/60 second exposure for smooth looking video. The FZ2500 has those built in which is nice, but not the older ZS200. Perhaps Panasonic has changed that in current models? If so it would be a GREAT travel camera and my first choice. Thanks for your comment!

I really like the optics and features of Sony cameras but their menu system and controls are horrible. They have settings that contradict each other in the menus, menu items that are randomly distributed without a sense of utility, and Ive seen this on numerous Sony cameras. If you watch other youtube reviews of Sony you’ll see the same reaction. It really defies description why such good cameras would be so chronically limited by bad menu engineering. If the controls on the camera were self reliant and didnt need the menu it would be different, but EVERY camera now relies on good menu layout and intelligence. Although Panasonic can be overwhelming at first you quickly figure out the 25% of stuff you need to know and can safely forget the rest. In any case, I wouldn’t go less than a 1” sensor on any camera that you need great images, low light and ability to crop in. Good luck! And thanks....

I had a LX100 since the day it got released, loved it but dust got sucked in and I had to pay for too many sensor cleaning. Then I got the ZS100 and aloth I miss the F1.7 and the bigger sensor for DOF the rest of the camera is surprisingly good. The only thing I would have done differently is removed the viewfinder which is way too small for me with my glasses to use anyway, remove the flash, and put an articulated screen for more incospicious hip shooting.

Great review. I've owned a TZ5 and TZ60 (ZS40 in North America?) and now own an LX100. I've also used by daughter's FZ150 and FZ1000 so played with lots of these cameras. It looks like Panasonic have hit a sweet spot with the ZS200. But the reason I bought the LX100 was a hankering for the retro feel of the camera. I love the full manual control and the fact that you can see and adjust the aperture, shutter and exposure compensation with real dials! Just like my old Pentax MX. I've customised the Q menu and FN buttons for the other things that are important to me. I'm forgetful - I need the physical dials to remind me how the camera is set. And it's a bargain if you get the right offer. Image quality is good (although not up to the other two cameras here, on the evidence) and the lens's ability to control depth of field and deliver in low light are winners for me. Lack of zoom has forced me to start focusing on a different type of photography and I'm really enjoying working on streetscapes, portraits and wider landscapes. None of these make it the best camera of the bunch but, if what drives you is learning about technique, it could still be a very good choice.
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 5 жыл бұрын
dibley001 I agree with you! Feature to feature new almost always beats old...especially zoom technology. But Like you, I really like setting dials on the camera and not using electronic switches. My ideal camera would be the ZS200 zoom on the LX100 form. That would be sweet! Oh, keep the touch sensitive back too...that works really well. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

Fz1000 is a fantastic camera, but it's about the size of a dslr, the tz100 is slightly faster than the tz200, both of which will fit in a jacket pocket. Lx100 bigger sensor, little zoom, just about fits in jacket pocket. Depends what you want

I wouldn't say it's correct to call ZS200 a camera which "replaces LX100". There is not much in common between ZS200 and LX100. LX100 is a 4/3 compact fixed-lens fast-aperture small-range-zoom. The closest camera to LX100 which is more modern is LX-10/LX-15 which is 1-inch compact fixed-lens fast-aperture small-range-zoom. ZS200 is a slow-aperture compact super-zoom which is more close to ZS100, if you look for an older similar model.

Thats a great question, so many camera “series” make steady improvements each year and the ZS200 probably has too. That said, I’ve upgraded my FZ1000 to its much better twin the FZ2500, but its not that compact. I still use my ZS200 all the time, love the 4K video and travel friendly size. It would have to be a BIG improvement to make me want to upgrade it, like a major increase in the sensor quality or big zoom increase. Still, its a great camera probably available second hand for peanuts now. Thanks for commenting.

Great video. Any experience with the ZS70 vs ZS200?
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 6 жыл бұрын
Good idea but i didnt have the ZS70. I just came from a three week, carry on only trip to Spain and the ZS200 performed great. Shot a LOT of 4K video (yikes 128 GB! so bring extra cards) and stills. I set the front ring to quickly adjust ISO up or down to “smooth” out the choppy video that gets created by short exposures in bright sttings. Makes for sweeter video. If I was shooting 4K for pulling out photos later and left the ISO high for short, sharp frames. It worked really well for great flamenco action shots. I never used a camera case and bumping the power switch on is easy to do. But it was definitely in my pocket and the zoom came in use frequently for people/street shots. Night shots I cranked the ISO to 12000+, lots of noise but got great shots without a flash.

I think that the LX100 and the ZS200 are in a different category from the FZ1000. The first two are more for putting in a pocket or small bag for quick shots. Whereas the FZ1000 has more custom settings and controls that make it for someone that is more interested in controlling the photos/videos. Both have value. I would say take the FZ1000 for creativity and ZS200 for portability. I think they fit into different niches.
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 6 жыл бұрын
Lepewhi Thanks for your thoughtful comment. You are right about form factor and controls being different, but much of the “guts” is shared, sensor, photo size, 4K video etc. With the zoom capability creeping up on the smaller cameras the need for the big “DSLR” sized bridge camera is less. Zoom is really the only major feature that seperates the pocketable cameras from the incredible quality of cellphone cameras, so why carry both? Cellphones do a great job, have 4K video, stabilized, decent ISO for such a small sensor, share images easier, and are always there. The world of cameras seems to be evolving into cameras with high zoom capacity and cellphones.
@Lepewhi
@Lepewhi 6 жыл бұрын
Sure I understand that they have the same sensor and that zooms are going farther in smaller form factors. But, my point is that the fz1000 has more options for creative controls and customization. I know that some cellphones have excellent IQ. But, at least mine doesn't zoom far and as often as it's been dropped, I can't see myself spending €1000 on a phone that might have more options. So, when I travel, I take a m4/3 and a point and shoot. I use them for different reasons. One to be creative and the other for grab shots. My phone is for making hotel reservations.
@MorkusReX
@MorkusReX 5 жыл бұрын
NorthOlbo wow. Finally someone who sees things as they are. Every time I say the exact same thing in photography forums, everyone loses their minds. "cell phones will never replace...." blah blah.. I just sold my FZ1000 because of the size and looking for a lighter / smaller replacement. To be honest, my phone handles dynamic range better than the FZ1000 with Google's HDR+ algorithm, but of course it loses in detail, speed and zoom. Now I'm thinking of to get the TZ200 or wait for a longer reach on the upcoming SX70 and maybe even the FZ400. For now I'm just with my phone until I find my next camera. I also miss GPS in cameras (I use it to search photos in my total collection) but I don't think they will bring it back.

Gal Along those lines I have the new Nikon P1000 superzoom “bridge”camera on order and will do a comparison against the FZ1000. Its ridiculously long optical zoom (24-3000...yes 3000!) maybe hits the limits of photographic reach before atmospheric turbulence and shake degrades image. F-stops suffer a bit, but I use my full telephoto on the FZ1000 all the time. I like the Canon superzooms too, but have stayed in the Panasonic “family” as I’m comfortable with the menus and logic. I think you are on the right idea though, stay tuned for the review to see if its worth ditching the FZ1000!

Thank you for your review, I'm currently owning the Sony HX90 30x travelzoom camera. What I dislike about this camera is the lack of details when makeing a photo in low light situations. I understand this is caused by the small 1/2.3 sensor. Would upgrading to the TZ200 be a right step for me to take, in order to upgrade the quality of my low light pics? Hope you can answer that question. Thanks!

Thanks for your inquiry. the 1” sensor in the Tz200 has a capture area of about 123 sq. mm, the 1/2.3 sensor of the Sony is an area of about 25 sq. mm. You can see what a HUGE difference it makes, in low light, ISO range, image quality for cropping etc. The small sensor works well in smartphone cameras and small size (and high zoom) cameras, but fails for exactly the reason you are describing. So yes, go for the upgrade.

@@NorthOlbo Thanks a lot for in input, one more question if you don't mind. How would you rate the TZ200 vs TZ100 would it be worth spending 200 euros extra on the new TZ200 ? Thanks
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo Жыл бұрын
@@michielcu No problem! There are a number of small tweaks in the upgraded TZ200 over the TZ100, but the BIG difference is the much longer zoom. The two cameras share the same sensor, focus system etc, but the bigger zoom really puts you into shots, wildlife, people, sports etc. No one ever complains about too much zoom, as long as the rest of the camera keeps up with a good sensor, nice handling, good screen and controls. The TZ200 has minor improvments in these areas as well. So yeah, if you can afford it you should go the extra money for the camera. It offers so much in such a small shape, thats a lot of power in your pocket. Cheers!

The 13 MP sensor on the LX100 doesnt give it much room to interpolate between the pixels to give a high resolution image. So, unlikely to ever match its 20 MP cousins in the digital zoom. Thanks for commenting, I’m sure others have had the same question.

Cool! In what mode do you shoot? M, A, S or P?
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 6 жыл бұрын
cubalibre51 Thanks! Right now for photos I mostly shoot in A or aperture mode. There is a narrow band of f stops so by picking one (6.3), then I can let the camera pick from a near infinite range of shutter speeds. I set the front “control ring” to adjust ISO, so I can either leave it on auto for quick snaps or pick an ISO to force it quickly into a fast or slow shutter speed. But...if i”m mostly shooting video, it looks best at 30 frames/sec with a 1/60 sec shutter speed. Its the nicest.smoothest video. So I’ll shoot in S at 1/60, set ISO to auto and let camera pick aperture unless I have a depth of field concern. I’m still learning this camera’s sweet spots so hopefully I’ll have another video on that later.

Depends...in video I shoot S for shutter trying to keep a shutter speed as close to 1/60 sec at 30 FPS as possible (best looking video). If taking photos I want fast shutter speed usually so go A for Aperture, wide open, let ISO float in auto mode. The ZS200 is al about shooting 4K video and pulling out 8 MP frames later for photos so either actually works, although the slower 1/60 may make for blurry photos. Looks Ok in video, not so much in photos. Thanks for the comment and question!

I know! You could NOT take that picture as a still, almost impossible to time a lightning flash. But with continuous 4K video, that one lucky frame captures it. I use 4K mostly for portraits! I leave the video running and have people think thoughts, make faces, I ask questions. In two minutes you’ll have hundreds of amazing micro-adjustments, that when looked at frame by frame will have several fantastic, natural and professional looking portraits.

Thanks for the comparison. I really got a lot out of it. One note of confusion: Your 4k video samples towards the end of your video is confusing. You voice over talks as if the videos are ZS200 and talk about optical stabilization, but the caption says LX100 throughout (which doesn't have video stabilization). In your final rating you gave higher rating for 4k video for ZS200 than LX100. So which camera were those videos taken with?
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 6 жыл бұрын
A very useful comment. It is a little confusing in that those last clips of the skydivers, planes, lightning were shot on the LX100. They were more to show the quality in that camera even with a smaller sensor. It does stabilize in 1080p mode, just not 4K. The 4K in the ZS200 will have a better rendering data rate, sensor size, photo MP. That said, the small discrete nature of the LX100, lens fully extended, will never appear "intimidating", unlike the long snoot of the ZS200, never the big honking FZ1000 with a lens hood on. The higher density sensor of the ZS200 should allow better cropping options in both 4K and photos. Add that to the zoom and more photo freedom is allowed. I so wish Panasonic hadn't cheated out on the articulating screen too, as well as no mike jack. In such an expensive camera!!! But I'm making a video on how to get better outside sound from the ZS200 (or any pocket camera) in the wind that may help out. Thanks again for pointing that out.

NorthOlbo thank you for your response. I ended up buying the Lx100 as my first real camera. After hours of research and your response here, I just had to pull the trigger, because there are SO MANY CHOICES.
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 6 жыл бұрын
Jacob Chang Still a good choice. I really liked the LX100’s feel as a “photgraphers camera”. By that I mean that you can quickly set the mode, shutter speed and aperture on the camera, that control is so useful for control of blur and depth of field, and motion capture. I let the ISO float on Auto as I let the camera decide that after I picked f stop and speed. If I was exposing for shadows or highlights I could also quickly shift the exposure up or down with the adjustment ring on the top. Those things are all possible in the ZS200 but buried down a level in the touch screen menus. Just that much more messing around. I have just finished a video on improving sound in the wind from those tiny mikes on the camera. Although I use a ZS200 the same tips will work for the LX100 or any camera with buried top mikes. Wad up a small piece of soft cloth (l use lens cloth but probably even kleenex would work), attach with an elastic and you’ll get a big improvement in wind howl reduction and improved clarity of actual sound. Have a look at my channel over the next day or two for the video and examples. Have fun with your choice...the LX100 is still a solid performer.

Nice comparison...but why compare the massive FZ100 (a super zoom bridge camera) to these compacts? Also, as mentioned the LX100 is a high end advanced shooter camera. Very different cameras. The Sony rx100 is more similar to compare...good video composition job!!!
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Even though the size/zoom are quite different most photographers are forced into the choice between big zoom and sensor versus small zoom/sensor but better portability for travel. Hence the “odd” comparison between the FZ1000 and the others. You are also right about the Sony, but now you have made the choice to go to the smaller form/zoom and its down to features and function of the two very similar cameras. I’ve had both, not the very recent series 7 RX100, but the 4. I sure hope Sony has improved their menu, its convoluted and deeply buried controls spoiled the overall feel of a great camera.

Yeah, I know, it's an odd suggestion, and ASMR is a bit strange when you first encounter it, but it is a lot of fun when you find the ASMR content that works for you.. it can be anything from role play (which I personally mostly find strange and imposing) to the sound of rubbing 2 plastic bottles together to someone just telling you about their day or ...say...their favorite camera or favorite photography locations etc.

The LX100 have a problem ! I own the GH4 and LX100 and the photos and videos are exactly similar, my friend own the FZ1000 and no comparaison, the LX100 is really better, looks the video on KZfaq, your LX100 have a problem of autofocus...
@NorthOlbo
@NorthOlbo Жыл бұрын
I agree about the LX100 searches in autofocus, especially in low light, low contrast settings. This is not uncommon in these cameras and can be very frustrating. I wish there was a setting that would “lock” the autofocus into a far mode or a near mode, so it wouldn’t rack back and forth trying to focus. I disagree about the LX100 optics being better than the FZ1000, I have the charts and data to support that. The LX100 zoom is great but gives up a little sharpness to get that big range. However, its size takes care of that compromise, I still think its the best pocket traveller out there. Thanks for your comment!
