I can't describe these slabs, you'll just have to see for yourself, they are some of my very best ever on the sawmill, these slabs would make awesome kitchen countertops. This was a monster log and really tough to get it slabbed. 3 blades total to cut one gigantic log but man was it worth it. This video is of the second day where I worked alone on this giant log. Don't tell anyone about my screwups, those are our secret! Lots of talking to the camera cause ya know, you guys where the only other ones there.

Just that little bit of wave isn't bad for that piece of timber. Cut just a little bit thicker to account for the flattening process, it'll look great.

When sliding slabs off sawmill could you rig a remote control winch to your skidsteer. Using two hook-pullies in side of slab running cable back to lift. Then slide the slab on the forks and save your back.

I used to stack fresh cut English oak. One inch per year in stick before the kiln, for furniture manufacture. A nice piece you had there to work with. Those wavy bits should be gone by the time it's dried out properly.

English oak is heavy wood!
@pippin1ful
@pippin1ful Жыл бұрын
With my workmate half my age we built a new drying yard for a traditional oak furniture manufacturer. 500 long tons in total between October to the end February '90/'91, the English stacking season. Freshly cut oak is heavy, especially 3"&4" slabs up to 4' wide. I used a 4 ton lifting side loading forklift I was licenced to handle. Turning over each plank while putting into stick became tricky with the thicker stuff. 4 trunks high up to 2". All weathers and mud but I enjoyed the challenge. I was an early retired timber merchant aged 50, but I decided one season was enough!

@@pippin1ful one of my videos says "700 pound slabs" in the thumbnail. That was a 35" oak. The camera doesn't do it justice but at one point in part 1 I lay down on top of the 3rd slab and I look tiny compared to the slab.

Like you said earlier in the video, taking that wide of a cut with all of those knots, it's gonna come out a little wavy. Had you cut it into a square cant and moved the Guide closer, a lot of that waviness would've disappeared. Still, those are good looking slabs. I couldn't help but laugh as you were calling yourself out on your mistakes. lol Hey, it takes a real man to admit to his own mistakes. Just chalk it up as "experience". At least no one can claim you didn't get enough of a workout. lol You wore ME out and all I did was watch you. LOL Great video!! 👍👍

Re comments regarding the use of cutting oil, why apply it on the outgoing side of the cutting action? Surely it should be employed to assist the cutting action and resist build up of resins on the blade. More obvious is the fact that these machines are equipped with an inbuilt water application system and the header tank is EMPTY! Why are you not using this? However you are producing some lovely slabs which I'm certain will be employed in various projects. Carry on with the good work.
