For the uninitiated: Costco has maintained the price for a Hot Dog and Soda combo at $1.50 USD since it was introduced in 1984. When the old founder and CEO stepped down and the new CEO took over, he questioned the old CEO about raising the price since they were losing money on it. He was told, "If you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out."

Fun Fact of Japanese Costco : If you purchase what they consider off the shelf medications there you pay for it at the pharmacy section. You don't bring it to the regular checkout. I learned that the hard way. They basically wrap it up like they do tax-fee items then you go to the regular checkout for your other stuff. Also they don't really have the sort of 500 tablets of Tylenol kind of thing. They really at best will give you 2 normal sized medication packages at a slightly reduced price. I assume this is due to how drugs are regulated in Japan even for what they consider over the counter stuff. Its basically a mix of 50% Kirkland stuff and 50% local Japanese stuff. But the entire place is functionally indistinguishable from a Costco in the USA , the entire layout, labels, etc all have the 'Costco feel' to it, which obviously makes sense. If you're in Japan for fun its not really worth going there unless you happen to be in maybe Hiroshima as the Costco is a quick 10 minute bus trip from the Hiroshima train station. But otherwise most Costco's in Japan are either only accessable by car or are extremely far way from the city centers.

@@Vyz3r It's a wholesaler, that's part of the reason. Typically wholesale places will only work with retailers, so it's a chain of factory -> wholesale -> retail. Costco cuts out the retail side by just opening up their warehouse as if it was a storefront, and pass the savings onto their customers, but in exchange they tend to sell stuff in bulk, like any wholesaler. Costco stores are designed in a horsehoe layout. The most expensive tech items are in the front on the way to the big rotisserie with the chickens, then the less expensive food, apparell, and miscellaneous items are on the way to the food court that look like a bargain by comparison. Free sample stations specifically hand out new shipments, encouraging shoppers to buy those and constantly keep sales up and new items coming in. They can afford to hand out these samples and have these relatively low prices because the required memberships means they make a profit no matter what.

Back in the mid 80s when my family first started going to costco, it was kinda a weird animal; everything was bulk, it was all set up for biasness purchases. My mother was homeschooling us at the time and the org she was working with for the lesson plans got her a costco membership... It was just surreal as a little kid going in there and seeing a bag of sugar that was 60lbs, or like a 20 gallon thing of bleach.

Okay I didn't know this person exists but they're so cute now I can never forget them this is bulshit man curiosity led me here and now I know I'm never going to leave she did all this for a huge portion of chocolates and the best part is nobody teased her like if you're not careful you're going to get fat bet there would have been a cute face for that one

Now that Luna has a membership, she can take all her Luknights to experience the food court :) But, more seriously, she should probably organize a trip with some other Holomems to divvy up some of the things she wanted to try into more manageable amounts

The best thing about refill cups is refilling the cup and taking it home or drinking it on your way home. You're not sitting in the Costco food court forever.

"Unless you sit there forever and drink constantly, you won't need a refill, right?" Oh you sweet summer child, you have no idea how much Americans drink in the span of eating a hotdog.

Her talking about the party/family sized cakes at Costco and how big they are, and wondering if anyone has eaten the whole thing themselves is kind of eyeroll inducing. It's not meant for a single person (at least in a single sitting). But the chat comment "I eat it every time while regretting my actions" was hilarious. And she's totally right about going there on weekends, something I avoid if I can help it.

My parents live in the middle of nowhere. They have a Costco membership and stock up for like a month's worth of groceries. Like, it's a whole trip since it takes close to an hour by highway to get to the nearest one. It's really great for shelf-stable or canned stuff since it'll last a while. The fresh produce and meats are good too, it's just most people aren't buying that in bulk in one go. At least not that I've noticed unless the people in question have a large family.
