What do you get when a Romantic Poet decides to write an Anti-War poem? First of all, you understand the strong reasoning behind the decision. Secondly, you get a beautiful contrast created by placing a story-time conversation between a Grandfather and his Grandchildren that turns into a gruesome account of the horrors of war. Thirdly, the casual and fast paced narrative, combined by the mindless and parrot-like repetition of the words 'a great victory' aptly conveys the tendency of the common man to take everything in stride and get brainwashed by larger forces.

Kaspar shook his head as a sign of the sadness he felt for the person whose skull was found. The shaking of the head is a combination of sadness and resignation because he felt that these things are inevitable in a great victory. Wilhelmine is younger because she is referred to as 'little' while Peterkin is referred to as 'young'. Peterkin is more assertive and curious in his reactions and Wilhelmine has wonder in her eyes. However at the end of the poem, she is the one who assertively states that it was a very wicked thing and is quickly admonished by Old Kaspar. This again powerfully reinforces the anti-war message of the poem. Thanks for the question. :)

I think because the old man is just talking about how great the war was and his grandchildren are talking about the badeffects of the war teaching us how people during war gets brainwashed by the thought how they won and how the great their victory was. Just a random thought

Everyone here is talking about their exams.Beautiful explanation and such a truthful message and story in this poem.Kaspar is very misguided about the concept of war due to the people of his time,the innocence of his grandchildren supports the children to see how futile this war was.The views of the young children appear more meaningful here.Kaspar just represents every poor old lad who was wrongly guided,we cannot blame him though.

It was a famous victory but did it do any good? Did it solve any real problems? Did it help the common people? No, on the contrary it only created widespread destruction and untold suffering. So there was no point in the victory. It was purely state propaganda intended to mislead the common people.
