Texan in Tokyo

Texan in Tokyo

Күн бұрын

Story of my life - I was too busy to cook and craving comfort food while I worked on my third book.
So I did a quick run to a Japanese convenience store and picked up lunch. And, of course, made a video.

Going from won to yen can be confusing. At first glance I thought the whole cost was a dollar something... but it's more like 10 dollars haha whoops. In Korea we drop three 0's off the price and it's roughly that in US dollars.

I love conbini food! Ever since I've started studying in Japan about a year ago I've pretty much been living off it it since I can't cook and my dorm room is too small anyway. They do have a lot of unhealthy stuff but there is lots of yummy salads and other things. It's so nice how cheap it is even though everything is so delicious~ I swear some things I've eaten at the 7-11 have been tastier than stuff I've gotten at a really nice restaurant.

Nearly 10 dollars is pretty expensive. In some restaurants where I live you can get lunch including one main dish, salad, coffee and water for around 11-12 dollars. Of course, the food you can get from the convenience store in Japan might be just as good as the restaurant food, but where I live it is not even comparable.

Since my first trip to Japan in 2011 I've become addicted to combini food. In Canada, convinience store food is ... well ... flavor less, not healthy at all and pretty limited...Oh and I forgot Totally expensive. I was amazed by Japanese combini. You can get a lot of stuff and it will not be that expensive. You have a lot of variety and its SOOOOO good. My favorite combini snacks : Melon pan, pudding. Seriously Japanese pudding is soooo good. I think its in 7 eleven that they have local milk pudding. And favorite combini meals : Onigiri, korroke and lawson chicken. I have an habit thought that when I eat something good Im scared to change my habit and be disapointed by what I ate ...so I usually eat the same things over and over again ... I will try to change that next time I go to JP. Your meal seems so delicious. ( Well almost every JP seems delicious to me lol)

Drake Flames Yeah. We don't own a dryer. I don't mind hanging up my clothes - it's a lot "easier" on them in the long run. And the sunshine makes them smell fabulous. Some washing machines have built-in dyers, though, so it just depends on the machine~

One of the things I miss the most about my month in Japan is the food. And that includes the healthy food I got to eat with the lovely homestay families that took me in, but ALSO convenience store food, since that's what I got every day to eat over lunch break at my internship. Nearly a year past, I'm still craving it T.T

I would love to be able to buy things like Onigir, Oden, Nikuman, Sushi/Sashimi etc. Love your channel too. only found it recently but have been watching other Jvloggers for a while. Sprouts for the Win!!!!! Mochi and red bean paste is awesome! Reminds me of dates. (the fruit). Totally worth ransacking your local Asian market for! (for those not in Japan) Near where I am we have a market called Uwajimaya (I'm in the Pacific Northwest) They've just about anything you needs Japanese..including a book store. Lots of fun to wander around in. Making dashi for the first time as I type. The kelp is soaking. Fun vid! ^_^ I'm always amazed at the packaging solutions companies come up with over there. :D

As silly as it sounds, this was one of my favourite things in Japan. You could go to any convenience store and actually get a really cheap decent meal from a really varied selection at any time. Convenience store fare here is not only terrible but also terribly expensive. You'd never actually even consider getting a meal from a convenience store unless your idea of a meal is an overpriced week old hotdog and a bag of doritos.

Wow... That's kinda expensive... In certain parts of the east coast US we have a convenience store called Wawa. It's got fresh stuff, little to no preservatives, stuff is made right in front of you, usually under 5 minutes for your stuff to be made, & something about the size of your meal there would be ~$6-7.

I was wondering what that ball dessert was! Often the sweets are too sweet for me so I don't even try (unless I go on a random binge). You got me, I've been eating conbini meals every day because the sharehouse where I'm at has a sad, sad little kitchen. I think I need to learn to use the gas stove though, this conbini thing is ridiculous. (I'm only here for another 3 weeks before switching to a much better sharehouse with my husbaaaand)

Hmm, not sure I would eat lunch from a convenience store unless I am bringing it along for a trip or an excursion. You can get fresher and better quality food from a good restaurant for the same price or even less. That said, I am addicted to 7-Eleven's awesome onigiri. They have the best 'mainstream' onigiri I have come across so far. Yum! But seeing how expensive they are, I only use convenience stores when they are truly convenient (e.g. after the local supermarkets close or if I'm in a hurry and cannot make it to the local supermarket in time). Since most conbini accept credit cards, I sometimes use them if I run short on cash and didn't have time to withdraw money (a special thank you to the local JP Bank ATMs closing at 5PM everyday).

This looks yummi! But I actually have a question that has been bothering me for quiet some time now. As a german, I'm would never consider a 9,20€ meal affordable (at least not for most people). For that price, you could easily have a meal and a drink at most restaurants. I know you allready made a video about how much life in japan costs, but I think you never talked about something like an average income. In germany, the average person earns about 1500€ after taxes. How high is the average income in japan? Or, as you always calculate into $, how high is the average monthely income in the US? I know that's not a fun question but it really makes me curious
