This PSA had to be from 1973, because the NTRDA became the ALA that year. What an amazing classic! Very clear and easy to follow.

Amazing that even 50 years ago, we knew that public transportation was a key component to reducing pollution, and that car dependence would ultimately have a negative impact on the world... and yet here we are, 50 years later, and so little has really changed.

The National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disesase Association became the American Lung Association in 1973, with the diagonal Cross of Lorraine being shown. The NTRDA had that chilling ending with the spinning Cross of Lorraine whizzing across the screen with the bongo drum like sound in the background.

I remember one other PSA the showed a fat lady running with a fat dog, then much later, a newspaper, laying on the steps of a brownstone, had a photo of the said lady and her dog, both dead

Where are Harriet Nelson's PSAs. Ozzie's death from smoking was so well known no explanation was needed as to why she was asking people not to smoke.

RIGHT ON! Mass transit IS the solution! Too bad for the all-American love affair with the automobile.

If not for public transportation, I’d have no means to go anywhere since I cannot drive due to being visually impaired.

Doesn't help that most states seem to prefer blowing infrastructure money on highway widening than actually improving mass transit access and giving the general public an alternative to driving...

I would add to this to drive an electric or an electric hybrid. We own an electric hybrid so we almost never have to buy gas. We only need it for long trips. Our daily driving is totally gas-free and electricity is much cheaper by the mile than gasoline. We will probably fill our gas tank no more than about a dozen times all year. We go months at a time without having to buy gas. When we use gas we get about 42 miles per gallon, sometimes in the mid-50s. (Also 100% of our electricity is produced with renewable energy, so none of the electricity we use has polluted the environment either.)

Problem is the ridiculously high pollution of mining the lithium and other precious metals for the electric car batteries. Unfortunately it far outweighs any pollution from a petrol engine
@inkyguy
@inkyguy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Codsworth_, in fact the mining of these materials does not produce more pollution and carbon than that created by internal combustion engines or the pollution that these vehicles prevent. That’s ridiculous. These raw materials are mined en masse at a large scale to produce huge numbers of batteries, and on average an electric car’s battery can last between 5 -10 years, during which it produces no hydrocarbons emissions. Moreover, as the technology is developed, more miles will be able to be driven using the same or less battery power, and these materials can be recycled to be used again and again to produce new batteries, which further reduces the cost to extract the raw materials both in terms of the money and the pollution. None of this is possible with petroleum fuel, which is used once, highly pollutes the environment and atmosphere and can never be recovered.

@@inkyguy I've heard somewhere (don't quote me on this) that today's EVs need to be driven 10k-20k miles to make up for the environmental impact of the battery production. Also I'm not sure how recyclable our batteries are, because some parts may be recyclable but some will be very toxic, and hopefully we will get more battery recycling/disposal businesses out there.

If I remember from the news, one problem with some ev batteries is they are complicated to dispose of or recycle. Some company are specially designing their battery for easy of use and potentially future upgrades. I think the company was Chinese called Geely or BYD
